Tool-Based Case Studies on Strategic Deployment of Untapped Micro-Pumped Hydro Storage in Michigan

With most classical hydropower sites already utilized and the global push for rapid integration of renewable energy sources accelerating, there is a critical need to identify alternative energy storage solutions. Pumped hydro energy storage, which accounts for the vast majority of global grid-scale storage, remains one of the most cost-effective and long-duration storage technologies available. Hence, this study presents a novel tool designed to assess the untapped potential of inland lakes and reservoirs for micro-PSH, using Michigan’s relatively flat landscape as a case study due to its extensive but underutilized water infrastructure. To ensure accuracy and reliability, the tool incorporates extensive data gathered from authorized sources, covering more than 420 water facilities and potential reservoirs in the state. The tool evaluates key parameters such as horizontal and vertical distances, volume, and the total storage capacity of each reservoir. Its robust assessment framework integrates these metrics to evaluate each site’s potential. The tool’s intuitive interface and geospatial visualizations support actionable insights for planners and scalable deployment of distributed storage infrastructure.

A comparison of plastic and visco-plastic constitutive models for accurate predictions in PM-HIP

Powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP) is an advanced manufacturing process that can efficiently produce near net shape parts with high material utilization and uniform microstructures. While the PM-HIP process is used frequently to produce small-scale components, its application to large-scale components is still limited due to inadequate understanding of its complex processes that cause unpredictable post-HIP shape distortions. A computational model can be a cost-effective alternative to exhaustive experimentation required to understand the PM-HIP process fully. Therefore, we present a comparison of plastic and visco-plastic models that are frequently used to model the PM-HIP process. We show that the predictions of powder densification behavior and shape distortions obtained from both the models are similar under most conditions and agree well with experimental observations.

Hierarchical Resilience Planning for Networked Microgrids: A Case Study of Puerto Rico

Microgrids can be designed to enhance the energy resilience of communities and critical infrastructures, such as hospitals, data centers, and communication networks, which are vulnerable to frequent weather-related disruption. Coordinating multiple microgrids in a network can leverage the geographical diversity of load and generation resources while enabling resilient and cost-effective planning of the distribution system. Designing a networked microgrid is complex, involving intricate technical assessment, cost-benefit analysis, site-specific requirements, and the evaluation of existing resources. Therefore, this paper proposes a hierarchical resilience planning framework and performs an extensive techno-economic analysis for the design of a networked microgrid. Hierarchical resilience planning involves technology sizing at an individual community level to meet the critical load and satisfy resilience criteria, and resource optimization at networked microgrid level to provide a higher level of resilience and energy adequacy. A real-world case of Puerto Rico's cooperative microgrid “Microrred de la Montaña” is investigated considering localized electricity tariffs, site-specific demand profiles, solar generation, and existing hydro resources. Multiple optimization scenarios are developed based on the resiliency requirement to estimate the capacity of solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage (BES) to be installed at each substation. The results provide the optimal sizing for individual community and networked microgrid to withstand 1day and 3-day outages along with the criteria for critical load.

Cost-Benefit Assessment of Additive Manufacturing for Injection Molds

This report presents an additive-manufacturing (AM) technology, where AM Cyclic Olefin Resin (COR) molds would be used for injection molding. The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) team has focused on the costs and economics of this developing technology. This report presents a cost-benefit analysis of using the polySpectra AM COR molds made of COR, at the start of the project (Present') and the potential lifetime, cost-effectiveness, and performance by the end of the project period (Period 3'). The analysis of the AM COR molds is compared to traditional Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machined aluminum molds across the time periods. A cost-benefit model framework has been developed to evaluate AM COR molds. This model accounts for mold delivery to customers, current and future levels of technology readiness, the type of material injected, and various business cases. AM COR molds offer a major advantage in lead time, reducing production setup from weeks or months (with CNC machining) to as little as two to five days. This enables faster prototyping, quicker design cycles, and accelerated time-to-market, critical in industries like electronics, aerospace, medical devices, and automotive. Even modest improvements in the durability of polySpectra AM COR molds show the potential for these molds to complement traditional tooling. With further development, AM COR mold technology could provide significant time and cost savings while supporting increased domestic manufacturing capacity.

INTEGRATION OF DATA ANALYTICS WITH SYSTEM HEALTH PROGRAMS

Industry equipment reliability and asset management programs are essential elements that help ensure the safe and economical operation of nuclear power plants. The effectiveness of these programs is addressed in several industry developed and regulatory programs. However, these programs have proven to be labor intensive and expensive. There is an opportunity to significantly enhance the collection, analysis, and use of this information to provide more cost-effective plant operation. Additionally, there is an acute industry need to leverage advanced technology to reduce costs and improve operational effectiveness. The goal of this paper is to provide effective and efficient analytical methods and tools to support risk-informed decisions for the equipment reliability and asset management programs at nuclear power plants. This is accomplished by creating a direct bridge between component health/lifecycle data and decision making (e.g., maintenance scheduling and project prioritization). Here we are supporting typical system engineer decisions regarding maintenance activity scheduling and component ageing management. This is performed in a risk-informed context where herein the term “risk” is broadly constructed to include both plant reliability and economics. This framework combines data analytics tools to analyze equipment reliability data with risk-informed methods designed to support system engineer decisions (e.g., maintenance and replacement schedules, optimal maintenance posture) in a customizable workflow. A challenge is that the structure of this workflow strongly depends on the decision that needs to be made, the type of data available, and the constraints that need to be considered. Current methods are designed to provide specific answers to specific problems; however, these methods might prove to be inadequate even when problem settings slightly change (e.g., different types of requirements, additional dependencies between system reliability and economics). We tackled this challenge by designing framework in a flexible and modular fashion such that the user can assemble and customize his/her own workflow that integrates SSC economic lifecycle models (e.g., maintenance and replacement costs), system reliability models, and optimization methods.

Nondestructive Evaluation of Concrete: Elastic Property Imaging Through Full Waveform Inversion

Concrete is a major construction material worldwide and plays a crucial role in the nuclear industry. The elastic properties of concrete are prone to change and degrade while in service, as it is often subjected to extreme operational and environmental conditions. An accurate evaluation of concrete's elastic properties is thus essential to ensure structural integrity and safety. This is especially true for concrete in nuclear power plants, where irradiation effects significantly impact concrete mechanical properties. There are various methods to assess these properties, with ultrasound-based techniques showing high potential due to their nondestructive nature, cost-effectiveness, and safety. While several nondestructive evaluation methods exist, most rely on idealizations such as assuming homogeneous material and plane wavefronts. In this work, we address these issues by introducing an ultrasound-based nondestructive method aimed at reconstructing spatially varying images of concrete mechanical properties. By accurately modeling wave physics, including scattering and reflection, we overcome several of the aforementioned idealizations and aim to utilize the full waveform for imaging material properties through depth, resulting in more reliable images. Full waveform inversion (FWI) was first introduced by geophysicists to reconstruct subsurface elastic property images. The goal is to minimize the difference between simulated and recorded wavefield signals, often through gradient-based optimization algorithms. While FWI is primarily conducted using the acoustic approximation of the wave equation, few works focus on elastic FWI, where the goal is to reconstruct images of not only the pressure wave speed but also the shear wave speed and density (or their equivalents). This work explores the potential of using elastic FWI to predict concrete mechanical properties as an initial effort for a more accurate monitoring of concrete conditions in service. Reconstructing images of different elastic parameters enables more specificity and accurate condition diagnosis. This paper will detail this approach and provide examples demonstrating the effectiveness of elastic FWI in reconstructing comprehensive maps of concrete mechanical properties.

Enhancing Post-Irradiation Examination (PIE) Efficiency with High-Throughput Experiments

Nuclear materials testing is essential for understanding changes in reactor environments, but traditional methods are costly and time-consuming. High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE) enables rapid screening and optimization of material properties by significantly increasing the number of specimens in the experiment. In this work, HTE methods were employed to irradiate novel materials at the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory. A total of 367 sub-sized tensile specimens were irradiated using the standard capsule design. To facilitate HTE, automated systems such as the Automated Mechanical Testing System were implemented for mechanical testing within hot cell environments, thereby reducing the need for manual interaction with hot cell manipulators and significantly lowering both the cost and duration of experiments. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used to measure displacement during mechanical testing, providing precise, non-contact measurement capabilities. The methodologies developed in this research will support the advancement of HTE techniques for future nuclear materials testing experiments at ATR. This approach allows for more efficient and cost-effective evaluation of new materials, ultimately leading to improved reactor performance, enhanced safety, and extended longevity within the nuclear industry.

INL POSTER 2025- KRYSTAL FOSTER

The Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) employs the N-16 system to measure reactor power by detecting beta particles emitted from nitrogen-16 isotopes. During startup, the N-16 pumps cause rapid oscillations in the discharge piping due to pressure transients, which cease when the valve supplying N-16 flow to the reactor is opened. To address this, a soft-starter is proposed to gradually increase the motor voltage, reducing mechanical stress and preventing pressure surges. This solution enhances system stability, lowers maintenance costs, extends equipment lifespan, and is more cost-effective than Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), making it ideal for the infrequently activated N-16 pumps.
