False Cape Data Collection Annex, Solid Waste Management Unit 113, Limited Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Facility Investigation Report, Kennedy Space Center, Florida

This Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Facility Investigation (RFI) Report summarizes groundwater investigation activities performed between July 2020 and October 2023 at the False Cape Data Collection Annex (FCDC) (Solid Waste Management Unit [SWMU] 113) located at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The purpose of the RFI is to characterize the nature and extent of volatile organic compound (VOC)-contaminated groundwater at FCDC; evaluate the fate and transport of VOC contamination; collect sufficient data to evaluate potential future requirements for the site, such as corrective measures, long term monitoring, or No Further Action; and conduct a human health preliminary risk evaluation (PRE) based on the groundwater data.

Northern Rockies Ecological Conservation: Leveraging Earth Observations to Monitor and Predict Populations of Federally Threatened Whitebark Pine (Pinus albicaulis) across the Intermountain West

Whitebark pine (WBP; Pinus albicaulis) is an ecologically important species in North America. As a federally listed threatened species, an understanding of WBP habitat, distribution, and health is important for the natural resource managers of the National Park Service, United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, and non-profit organizations such as the Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation. Previous attempts to develop models of WBP habitat suitability and distribution lack confidence in their validity and integrity for these organizations. The updated models of habitat suitability and distribution developed by this study would provide managers with a capability to be employed in the conservation and future research direction for WBP. Thus, we developed a habitat suitability model of WBP at a high spatial resolution (Landsat 9 Operational Land Image-2, National Land Cover Database, NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission; 30m pixels) using a generalized logistic regression with an area under the curve value of 0.754. We extracted spectral reflectance signatures from overlapped ground sample points and Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument. The spectral signature analysis indicates WBP is separable from other tree species. We also utilized a visual validation approach and random forest (RF) modeling to separate WBP from limber pine. Through visual validation the RF classifier successfully identified 8out of 10 WBP trees gathered through ground truth points. Additionally, we achieved an overall accuracy of 91%in our confusion matrix for the distribution model using a dependent validation approach. The derived products from this study allow project partners to assess current suitable habitat and apparent health status in areas of identified WBP occurrence, providing data to aid future research regarding WBP health.

A Conservative, Scalable, Space-Time Blade Element Rotor Model for Multi-Rotor Vehicles

The development of a parallel blade-element rotor model and its implementation into an adaptive Cartesian method is described. The unsteady version of the rotor model applies a body force to all cells contained in the swept space-time volume at each timestep and special care is taken to maintain axisymmetry on the Cartesian grid. Mesh convergence of rotor thrust and torque is obtained with around 10000 cells in the disk for the steady model. Parallelization is accomplished using OpenMP and the rotor force computation is distributed across all available nodes. Simulations of an isolated XV-15 rotor in hover show good correlation with experimental data and predictions of multi-rotor thrust variation closely match previous high fidelity simulations. The final paper will also include results from the unsteady rotor model and parallel scaling tests.

Explicit Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Conservation Laws

The two explicit DG methods in this study are based on a ‘predictor-corrector’ formulation, the first introduced by Lörcher, Gassner, and Munz (2007, 2008) called space–time expansion discontinuous Galerkin or STE-DG scheme, and the second, introduced independently by the author (Huynh 2006, 2013) called the upwind moment scheme. The predictor step of the two methods is essentially identical using a Cauchy-Kovalevsky (CK) procedure, which involves no interaction of the data among neighboring cells. The corrector step also shares the same space-time integration formulation and is where interaction of the data among neighboring cells takes place; the difference, however, is in how the resulting space-time volume integral is estimated. As a consequence of the different estimates, for the case of advection in one spatial dimension (1D), the moment scheme has a CFL (Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy) condition of 1 for all p and is accurate to order 2p+1, i.e., it possesses the super accuracy property, whereas the STE-DG method has a more restrictive CFL condition and is accurate to the expected order of p+1. For 1D advection, compared with the CFL conditions of 1/(2p+1) of standard RK-DG (Runge-Kutta) scheme where space and time discretization are of the same order, the moment scheme allows a significantly larger time step size. It also turns out that the scheme yields a result identical to Van Leer’s scheme III (1977), which amounts to shifting the data a distance of advection corresponding to the time step and projecting the result onto the space of polynomial solutions. Contrary to Van Leer’s approach, however, the space-time ‘predictor-corrector’ formulation facilitates extensions to the case of systems of equations. Concerning 2D extensions, in the case of advection, when the flow is along the diagonal direction, the CFL conditions for the moment schemes become restrictive as will be shown by Fourier (Von Neumann) stability and accuracy analyses. Since the moment scheme employs the right Radau points as collocation points in time, the method is closely related to the implicit Radau IIA scheme, which is stable for any time step size. The role of Radau IIA in relieving stability restriction for these explicit DG schemes remains to be explored

Helium Conservation by Diffusion Limited Purging of Liquid Hydrogen Tanks

Recently, the new 1.2-million-gallon liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) storage tank at the Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39 was purged, replacing nitrogen with helium, using a piston purge process. This purging approach had been used on Space Shuttle External Tanks (ET) in the past, but not on one of the large LH 2 tanks. The result was a huge success, potentially saving more than 1 million cubic feet of helium and significant labor. To better understand this result, a diffusion-based purge model was developed. The model predictions accurately match the helium concentration data, providing understanding of the helium savings and suggesting how to better optimize the purging of this large tank for future operations. The model was then applied to the piston purging of the Space Shuttle ETs, showing that these purges were not optimal, but that the amount of wasted helium was not excessive and that additional helium might have been saved by small changes to the process. The Space Shuttle Program (SSP) has ended, but these results are applicable to the purging of future large cylindrical LH 2 tanks. Finally, data have been obtained on inerting the Space Launch System (SLS) Core Stage (CS) LH 2 tank, replacing hydrogen with helium after an aborted launch. This is a more complicated case, but the model predicts that substantial helium might be saved by modifying the current purging process.
