Mycorrhizal associations of temperate forest seedlings mediate rhizodeposition, but not soil carbon storage, under elevated nitrogen availability
Abstract Tree‐mycorrhizal associations are associated with patterns in nitrogen (N) availability and soil organic matter storage; however, we still lack a mechanistic understanding of what tree and fungal traits drive these patterns and how they will respond to global changes in soil N availability. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated how arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM)‐ and ectomycorrhizal (EcM)‐associated seedlings alter rhizodeposition in response to increased seedling inorganic N acquisition. We grew four species each of EcM and AM seedlings from forests of the eastern United States in a continuously 13 C‐labeled atmosphere within an environmentally controlled chamber and subjected to three levels of 15 N‐labeled fertilizer. We traced seedling 15 N uptake from, and 13 C‐labeled inputs (net rhizodeposition) into, root‐excluded or ‐included soil over a 5‐month growing season. N uptake by seedlings was positively related to rhizodeposition for EcM‐ but not AM‐associated seedlings in root‐included soils. Despite this contrast in rhizodeposition, there was no difference in soil C storage between mycorrhizal types over the course of the experiment. Instead root‐inclusive soils lost C, while root‐exclusive soils gained C. Our findings suggest that mycorrhizal associations mediate tree belowground C investment in response to inorganic N availability, but these differences do not affect C storage. Continued soil warming and N deposition under global change will increase soil inorganic N availability and our seedling results indicate this could lead to greater belowground C investment by EcM‐associated trees. This potential for less efficient N uptake by EcM‐trees could contribute to AM‐tree success and a shift toward more AM‐dominated temperate forests.
The nature and origins of decametre-scale porosity in Ordovician carbonate rocks, Halahatang oilfield, Tarim Basin, China
At >7 km depths in the Tarim Basin, hydrocarbon reservoirs in Ordovician rocks of the Yijianfang Formation contain large cavities ( c . 10 m or more), vugs, fractures and porous fault rocks. Although some Yijianfang Formation outcrops contain shallow (formed near surface) palaeokarst features, cores from the Halahatang oilfield lack penetrative palaeokarst evidence. Outcrop palaeokarst cavities and opening-mode fractures are mostly mineral filled but some show evidence of secondary dissolution and fault rocks are locally highly ( c . 30%) porous. Cores contain textural evidence of repeated formation of dissolution cavities and subsequent filling by cement. Calcite isotopic analyses indicate depths between c . 220 and 2000 m. Correlation of core and image logs shows abundant cement-filled vugs associated with decametre-scale fractured zones with open cavities that host hydrocarbons. A Sm–Nd isochron age of 400 ± 37 Ma for fracture-filling fluorite indicates that cavities in core formed and were partially cemented prior to the Carboniferous, predating Permian oil emplacement. Repeated creation and filling of vugs, timing constraints and the association of vugs with large cavities suggest dissolution related to fractures and faults. In the current high-strain-rate regime, corroborated by velocity gradient tensor analysis of global positioning system (GPS) data, rapid horizontal extension could promote connection of porous and/or solution-enlarged fault rock, fractures and cavities. Data for Expression of a Bacterial Trehalose 6-Phosphate Synthase Gene otsA in Camelina sativa Seeds Promotes the Channelling of Carbon Towards Oil Accumulation
Improving seed oil yield is essential for developing Camelina sativa as a sustainable biofuel crop. Fatty acid synthesis depends on the production of acetyl-CoA from photosynthetically derived sugars. Trehalose 6-phosphate (T6P), a proxy for sucrose availability, can link sugar status to plant growth and development. Synthesised by trehalose 6-phosphate synthase (TPS) from UDP-glucose and glucose-6-phosphate, T6P plays a regulatory role in metabolism. Our previous studies on Arabidopsis transgenic lines constitutively expressing the E. coli otsA (encoding TPS) showed increased T6P levels and seed triacylglycerol, along with stunted growth. In the present study we express otsA in camelina under the control of a seed-specific Phaseolin promoter. Seeds of the resulting transgenic lines accumulated high levels of T6P, and a 15%–20% increase in total fatty acids and triacylglycerol compared to wild-type. Molecular analysis showed the transgenic seeds had reduced SnRK1 activity, elevated WRI1 protein levels, and increased the levels of WRI1 and its target genes, along with enhanced rates of fatty acid synthesis that increased seed weights relative to wild type. Notably, the increase in oil did not affect seed protein levels but did reduce the soluble metabolite fraction. Crucially, seed-specific expression of otsA mitigated the growth defects associated with constitutive otsA expression, and the transgenic lines showed normal seed development and germination. These findings demonstrate that targeted T6P modulation via seed-specific otsA expression is an effective metabolic engineering strategy to boost oil production in camelina and potentially in other oilseed crops and bioenergy crops such as energycane, sorghum and miscanthus.

Jaynesian Analysis of Environmental Chemistry: Systems Model Component Integration via the Arctic Aquatic Carbon Cycle
Focal Areas: All three are touched upon from the OBER call. We will consider formal logical inference and entropic information analysis for sparse but intensive chemical measurements, as optimal drivers for managing process complexity. As a centerpiece for the discussion we take soil-to-sea organic structural evolution within the Arctic hydro-geochemosphere, assessing detrital negentropy then algorithmic greed to generate ranked, reduced mechanisms for system integration.

Carbonated Brine Injection for a Pilot Site as a Low-Risk Geologic Carbon Storage Strategy: A Simulation Study
This technical report presents a preliminary study for CBI implementation in the Pena Creek pilot site in Dimmit County, Texas, targeting the Edwards Limestone Formation for SWD, in collaboration with NGL Energy Partners. The objective of this study is to find the conservative CO 2 molality for safe storage and potential risks for CBI at this pilot site. Geomodel was performed to get site-specific reservoir geology information. Reservoir modeling was performed to investigate dissolved CO 2 molality and pressure changes at relevant injection conditions. Wellbore corrosion and compatibility was discussed with corrosion modeling. Dissolved CO 2 long-term fate in the reservoir was examined with reactive transport modeling. This plan would set the scientific foundation as the initial step for future implementation in the field.
