Ultra-Compact Broadband High-Spurious Suppression Bandpass Filter Using Double Split-end Stepped Impedance Resonators

We propose an ultra compact single-layer spurious suppression band pass filter design which has the following benefit: 1) Effective coupling area can be increased with no fabrication limitation and no effect on the spurious response; 2) Two fundamental poles are introduced to suppress spurs; 3) Filter can be designed with up to 30% bandwidth; 4) The Filter length is reduced by at least 100% when compared to the conventional filter; 5) Spurious modes are suppressed up to at the seven times the fundamental frequency; and 6) It uses only one layer of metallization which minimize the fabrication cost.

A Broadband Microwave Radiometer Technique at X-band for Rain and Drop Size Distribution Estimation

Radiometric brightess temperatures below about 12 GHz provide accurate estimates of path attenuation through precipitation and cloud water. Multiple brightness temperature measurements at X-band frequencies can be used to estimate rainfall rate and parameters of the drop size distribution once correction for cloud water attenuation is made. Employing a stratiform storm model, calculations of the brightness temperatures at 9.5, 10 and 12 GHz are used to simulate estimates of path-averaged median mass diameter, number concentration and rainfall rate. The results indicate that reasonably accurate estimates of rainfall rate and information on the drop size distribution can be derived over ocean under low to moderate wind speed conditions.

Broadband, Low-Loss Phase Shifters Based on Thin Ferroelectric Films

Several different types of microwave transmission line phase shifters based on thin ferroelectic films have been developed at the NASA Glenn Research Center. These include a series of coupled microstrip lines, slotline incorporating Marchand balms, odd-mode coplanar strips, and hybrid devices incorporating a switch to toggle the output termination between an open and virtual short circuit. A review of the theory of operation of each of these devices will be presented along with measured performance. Also, devices of the first variety have been subjected to total dose (proton) radiation exposure using a 200 MeV beam energy with a total dose up to nearly 1 kRad (Si). Results of these radiation tests will be discussed.

A Broadband Superconducting Detector Suitable for Use in Large Arrays

Cryogenic detectors are extremely sensitive and have a wide variety of applications (particularly in astronomy), but are difficult to integrate into large arrays like a modern CCD (charge-coupled device) camera. As current detectors of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) already have sensitivities comparable to the noise arising from the random arrival of CMB photons, the further gains in sensitivity needed to probe the very early Universe will have to arise from large arrays. A similar situation is encountered at other wavelengths. Single-pixel X-ray detectors now have a resolving power of (Delta)E < 5 eV for single 6-keV photons, and future X-ray astronomy missions anticipate the need for 1,000-pixel arrays. Here we report the demonstration of a superconducting detector that is easily fabricated and can readily be incorporated into such an array. Its sensitivity is already within an order of magnitude of that needed for CMB observations, and its energy resolution is similarly close to the targets required for future X-ray astronomy missions.

Imaging interferometer using dual broadband quantum well infrared photodetectors

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is developing a new imaging interferometer that has double the efficiency of conventional interferometers and only a fraction of the mass and volume. The project is being funded as part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Photonic Wavelength And Spatial Signal Processing program (PWASSSP).

Predicting broadband noise from a stator vane of a gas turbine engine

A computer-implemented model of fan section of a gas turbine engine accounts for the turbulence in the gas flow emanating from the rotor assembly and impinging upon an inlet to the stator vane cascade. The model allows for user-input variations in the sweep and/or lean angles for the stator vanes. The model determines the resulting acoustic response of the fan section as a function of the turbulence and the lean and/or sweep angles of the vanes. The model may be embodied in software that is rapidly executed in a computer. This way, an optimum arrangement in terms of fan noise reduction is quickly determined for the stator vane lean and sweep physical positioning in the fan section of a gas turbine engine.
