Air lock mechanism speeds specimen testing in high-temperature vacuum furnaces

Mechanism, made of 347 stainless steel, is attached to furnace port by bolted flange. Unit incorporates quick opening, high vacuum valve and associated fittings which provide connections to air lock evacuation and to inert gas supply for quenching specimen after it is withdrawn from furnace into air lock.

Fabrication of the titanium transition ring of the Large Space Telescope (LST)

The fabrication of the titanium transition ring is summarized. The transition ring assembly was designed for the large space telescope and consists of two large titanium rings bolted together. The cross section dimensions of the assembly are 13-inches wide by 7-inches thick. The fabrication processes are discussed, and it is concluded that the work involved fabricating the largest titanium forging ever made.

Thermal contact resistance in a non-ideal joint

The contact of two rough, wavy surfaces; the contact of two rough but nominally flat plates pressed together over a concentrated area; and the contact of two rough but nominally flat plates bolted together are considered. In each case the pressure distribution is calculated as a function of the surface properties. In the case of wavy surfaces it is found that all necessary information for any combination of parameters can be reduced to one master graph. In the other two cases one such graph is needed for each geometry used. The resulting pressure distributions are used in a specific heat transfer example and the total joint resistance versus roughness is presented. A method for decreasing the resistance by increasing the roughness is shown.

Fasteners and fastening techniques: A compilation

Technology on fasteners and fastening devices is presented, as part of NASA's TU program to provide technical information on devices, methods, and techniques resulting from aerospace research. The material is divided into two sections which include: (1) data concerning a selected group of fasteners and concept for fasteners such as locking devices, couplings, and connect and release mechanisms; and (2) discussions on a number of fastening techniques such as those for mounting panel lamps, clamping flange bolts, stretching fasteners, and transferring fuel from a tanker to another vehicle.

Effect of cryogenic irradiation on NERVA structural alloys

Several alloys (Hastelloy X, AISI 347, A-286 bolts, Inconel 718, Al 7039-T63 and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI) were irradiated in liquid nitrogen (140 R) to neutron fluences between 10 to the 17th power and 10 to the 19th power nvt (E greater than 1.0 Mev). After irradiation, tensile properties were obtained in liquid nitrogen without permitting any warmup except for some specimens which were annealed at 540 R. The usual trend of radiation damage typical for materials irradiated at and above room temperature was observed, such as an increase in strength and decrease in ductility. However, the damage at 140 R was greater because this temperature prevented the annealing of radiation-induced defects which occurs above 140 R.

Random excitation of a panel-cavity system

An experimental investigation of the influence of random external sound field on cavity pressure and panel vibration is presented. The panel used was 10 in. x 20 in. x 0.05 in. aluminum alloy plate that was bonded onto a rectangular frame consisting of aluminum channel members welded together at their ends. By bonding the plate to the cavity in this way, a clamped edge boundary condition was approximated. A sealed cavity was constructed beneath the panel in such a way that the cavity depth could be varied in 2 in. increments from 12 in. to 2 in. deep. In order to vary the cavity depth, the cavity was built in sections. Each 2 in. section of the cavity was bolted to the other sections with rubber gaskets between them. The panel was excited acoustically by a Wolverine LS15, 20 watt loudspeaker driven by a B and K random noise generator, Type 1402. The external sound field was measured on the panel surface, using the 6 percent bandwidth of the frequency analyzer.

SIT-5 system development.

A 5-cm structurally integrated ion thruster (SIT-5) has been developed for attitude control and stationkeeping of synchronous satellites. With two-dimension thrust-vectoring grids, a first generation unit has demonstrated a thrust of 0.56 mlb at a beam voltage of 1200 V, total mass efficiency of 64%, and electrical efficiency of 46.8%. Structural integrity is demonstrated with a dielectric-coated grid for shock (30 G), sinusoidal (9 G), and random (19.9 G rms) accelerations. System envelope is 31.8 cm long by 13.9 cm flange bolt circle, with a mass of 8.5 kg, including 6.2 kg mercury propellant. Characteristics of a second-generation unit indicate significant performance gains.

Determining distance to lightning strokes from a single station

Electronic system can rapidly determine location of lightning strikes occurring within 30 km range. Longer distances are also determined, but with reduced accuracy. Studies have shown that lightning bolt emits electromagnetic wavefront; distance to lightning is determined from ratio of magnetic to electric field.

Performance optimized, small structurally integrated ion thruster system

A 5-cm structurally integrated ion thruster has been developed for attitude control and stationkeeping of synchronous satellites. As optimized with a conventional ion extraction system, the system demonstrates a thrust T = 0.47 mlb at a beam voltage of 1600 V, total mass efficiency of 76%, and electrical efficiency of 56%. Under the subject contract effort, no significant performance change was noted for operation with two dimensional electrostatic thrust-vectoring grids. Structural integrity with the vectoring grids was demonstrated for shock (+ or - 30 G), sinusoidal (9 G), and random (19.9 G rms) accelerations. System envelope is 31.2 cm long by 13.4 cm flange bolt circle, with a mass of 9.0 Kg, including 6.8 Kg mercury propellant.
