Comparison of measurement and simulation of ATLAS cavern radiation background

Sixteen Medipix2 pixel detector based (MPX) devices were operated at various positions within the ATLAS detector and cavern continuously from early 2008 up to 2013. In addition to photons, each MPX detector is capable to detect charged particles, and neutrons as it is covered with a mask of converter materials dividing its area into regions sensitive to thermal or fast neutrons. The MPX detector network was effectively used for real-time measurements of the spectral characteristics and composition of complex radiation fields in ATLAS. This article reports comparison of the results of measurements performed with MPX detectors during the LHC operation period in 2010 and 2011 with Monte Carlo simulations results from the FLUGG and GCALOR codes. For the purpose of this comparison, the MPX detectors were operated in tracking mode with low threshold (8–10 keV) allowing one to distinguish among particle categories based on the recognition of track patterns left by the particles in the MPX sensitive layer. The comparison of measurements with simulations shows that the agreement between measured and simulated data is satisfactory in most cases within a factor of two.

Erratum: Production and validation of scintillating structural components from low-background Poly(ethylene naphthalate)

Regretfully, the author list of the original paper did not contain the members of the groups being responsible for the HPGe screening, Radon emanation measurement and ICPMS surface characterization works. As the work performed is to be considered more than “just service work”, the authors together with the members of these groups have decided to amend the authors list. At publication the following authors were not included in the author list: • From Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA, U.S.A.: E.W. Hoppe, I.J. Arnquist, K.P. Hobbs, A.D. French, M.L. diVacri • From INFN, Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, 67100 Assergi, Italy: M. Laubenstein • From M. Smoluchowski Institute of Physics, Jagiellonian University, 30-348 Krakow, Poland: G. Zuzel The metadata of the present erratum are already correct.

Strong nebular emissions associated with Mg ii absorptions detected in the SDSS spectra of background quasars

ABSTRACT We present long-slit spectroscopic observations of 40 Galaxy On Top of Quasars (GOTOQs) at ${0.37 \leqslant z \leqslant 1.01}$ using the South African Large Telescope. Using this and available photometric data, we measure the impact parameters of the foreground galaxies to be in the range of 3–16 kpc with a median value of 8.6 kpc. This is the largest sample of galaxies producing Mg ii absorption at such low impact parameters. These quasar–galaxy pairs are ideal for probing the disc–halo interface. At such impact parameters, we do not find any anticorrelation between rest equivalent width (REW) of Ca ii, Mn ii, Fe ii, Mg ii, and Mg i absorption and impact parameter. These sight lines are typically redder than those of strong Mg ii absorbers, with the colour excess, E(B − V) for our sample ranging from −0.191 to 0.422, with a median value of 0.058. In the E(B − V) versus W3935 plane, GOTOQs occupy the same region as Ca ii absorbers. For a given E(B − V), we find larger W3935 than what has been found in the Milky Way, probably due to a smaller dust-to-gas ratio in GOTOQs. Galaxy parameters could be measured for twelve cases, and their properties seem to follow the trends found for strong Mg ii absorbers. Measuring the host galaxy properties for the full sample using HST photometry or AO-assisted ground-based imaging is important to gain insights into the relationship between the stellar mass of galaxies and the metal line REW distributions at low impact parameters.

Time-dependent orbital-free density functional theory: Background and Pauli kernel approximations

Time-dependent orbital-free density functional theory (DFT) is an efficient method for calculating the dynamic properties of large-scale quantum systems due to the low computational cost compared to standard time-dependent DFT. In this work, we formalize this method by mapping the real system of interacting fermions onto a fictitious system of noninteracting bosons. The dynamic Pauli potential and associated kernel emerge as key ingredients of time-dependent orbital-free DFT. Using the uniform electron gas as a model system, we derive an approximate frequency-dependent Pauli kernel. Pilot calculations suggest that space nonlocality is a key feature for this kernel. Nonlocal terms arise already in the second-order expansion with respect to unitless frequency and reciprocal space variable ($\frac{ω}{qk_F}$ and $\frac{q}{2k_F}$, respectively). Given the encouraging performance of the proposed kernel, we expect it will lead to more accurate orbital-free DFT simulations of nanoscale systems out of equilibrium. Additionally, the proposed path to formulate nonadiabatic Pauli kernels presents several avenues for further improvements which can be exploited in future work to improve the results.

Magnetic edge fields in UTe 2 near zero background fields

Chiral superconductors are theorized to exhibit spontaneous edge currents. Here, in this study, we found magnetic fields at the edges of UTe 2 , a candidate odd-parity chiral superconductor, that seem to agree with predictions for a chiral order parameter. However, we did not detect the chiral domains that would be expected, and recent polar Kerr and muon spin relaxation data in nominally clean samples argue against chiral superconductivity. Our results show that hidden sources of magnetism must be carefully ruled out when using spontaneous edge currents to identify chiral superconductivity.
