Mesh Computing Remote Automatic Workflow

The software suite uses a microservice architecture using Docker and `docker-compose`. The microservices are as follows: 1. User interface. This interface is written in JavaScript using the Svelte framework. It exposes form elements and a 3D visualizer to prompt the user through the definition of microstructure parameters, and setting parameters for mesh generation and refinement. 2. Mesh generator. This is a container running the Python package for DREAM3D to generate a voxelized mesh that represents a microstructure defined by the user in the interface. 3. Cubit runner. This is a secure shell protocol tool that makes the submitting the DREAM mesh to an HPC instance and starts to run Cubit shell commands to smooth the grain boundaries with its `sculpt` library, applies user-defined boundary node sets, and bundles and returns the simulation-ready meshes and input files as a zipped directory.

EQSIM—A multidisciplinary framework for fault-to-structure earthquake simulations on exascale computers part I: Computational models and workflow

Computational simulations have become central to the seismic analysis and design of major infrastructure over the past several decades. Most major structures are now “proof tested” virtually through representative simulations of earthquake-induced response. More recently, with the advancement of high-performance computing (HPC) platforms and the associated massively parallel computational ecosystems, simulation is beginning to play a role in increased understanding and prediction of ground motions for earthquake hazard assessments. However, the computational requirements for regional-scale geophysics-based ground motion simulations are extreme, which has restricted the frequency resolution of direct simulations and limited the ability to perform the large number of simulations required to numerically explore the problem parametric space. In this article, recent developments toward an integrated, multidisciplinary earth science-engineering computational framework for the regional-scale simulation of both ground motions and resulting structural response are described with a particular emphasis on advancing simulations to frequencies relevant to engineered systems. This multidisciplinary computational development is being carried out as part of the US Department of Energy (DOE) Exascale Computing Project with the goal of achieving a computational framework poised to exploit emerging DOE exaflop computer platforms scheduled for the 2022–2023 timeframe.

A Deep Learning-Aided Workflow for Decoding the Stress Regime of Southern Nevada

The Rock Valley fault zone in southern Nevada has a notable history of seismic activity and is the site of a future direct comparison experiment of explosion and earthquake sources. This study aims to gain insight into regional tectonic processes by leveraging recent advances in seismic monitoring capabilities to elucidate the local stress regime. A crucial step in this investigation is the accurate determination of P-wave first-motion polarities, which play a vital role in resolving earthquake focal mechanisms of small earthquakes. Here, we deploy a deep learning-based method for automatic determination of first-motion polarities to vastly expand the polarity dataset beyond what has been reviewed by human analysts. By the integrating P-wave polarities with new measurements of S/P amplitude ratios, we obtain robust focal mechanism estimates for 1306 earthquakes with a local magnitude of 1 and above occurring between 2010 and 2023 in southern Nevada. We then use the focal mechanism catalog to examine the regional stress orientation, confirming an overall trans-tensional stress regime with smaller scale complexities illuminated by individual earthquake sequences. These findings demonstrate how detailed analyses of small earthquakes can provide fundamental information for understanding earthquake processes in the region and inform future experiments at the Nevada National Security Site.

INTEGRATED WORKFLOW MANAGEMENT FOR PARTICLE ACCELERATOR SIMULATION

Supercomputing systems are used for a wide range of computationally demanding tasks in many fields of science and engineering. They play a key role in numerical simulation, in which mathematical models are computed in order to simulate the behavior of physical systems. Scientists and engineers that use supercomputers for numerical simulation often have their productivity limited by the need to manually organize and manage extremely large amounts of data that are often produced and consumed by the software programs run on these systems. Recognizing these limitations, Kitware Inc. (Clifton Park, NY) and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (Menlo Park, CA) are developing an advanced software platform that can reduce the cognitive overhead required by knowledge workers when using supercomputers for numerical simulation. Phase I of the project is complete and includes the development of new capabilities for organizing simulation project files, improvements to the user interface and overall usability, and deployment of a “middle tier” server to sit between user desktop machines and supercomputers to offload much of the data management workload. The project also developed prototype software for executing sequences of numerical simulations, and a prototype for migrating supercomputing software to cloud-based computing systems to provide a potential alternative to supercomputers with different logistical and price-to-performance tradeoffs.

Data Science and Computation for Rapid and Dynamic Compression Experiment Workflows at Experimental Facilities (Workshop Overview) [Slides]

Motivation for this workshop stems from these items: Compression experiments are important to LANL's core mission. The scientific community is sometimes frustrated at the pace of discovery. Data analytics for other experimental regimes are advancing. Now is the time as facilities are upgraded and coming online. Advances in data analytics and computational resources could push compression experiment discoveries to a new level.

Execute BEE workflows on private cloud infrastructure-2.3.6.01 - LANL ATDM ST / STNS01-22 Milestone Completion Documentation (BEE-FY21 P6-2) [Slides]

This work involves the creation of the Cloud Launcher, a new subcomponent of BEE, and the extension of the BEETaskManager to run on Cloud systems. BEE will be able to interact with the Google Compute Engine and OpenStack cloud APIs to set up simple Cloud clusters for launching HPC job scripts. BEE will use existing functionality to launch jobs that previously could only be launched on HPC systems. The BEETaskManager will handle launching tasks on the Cloud cluster.
