Final Thermal Design and Thermal Vacuum Testing of the StarBurst Instrument

The StarBurst Multimessenger Pioneer is a small satellite mission serving as a wide-field gamma-ray observatory designed to capture the initial emissions of short gamma-ray bursts, electromagnetic signatures of neutron star mergers. This paper presents the final thermal design and analysis of the StarBurst Instrument, comprising the bus-to-instrument interface plate, control electronics, and twelve crystal detector units, which form the core of the mission’s science capability. The passive thermal control system design requires consideration of restrictive keep-out zones, unknown orbital parameters, and narrow temperature limits of the detectors. Also summarized is the instrument level thermal vacuum cycle test, correlated model refinements, and updated model results. Following successful completion of the instrument test campaign, the hardware was integrated with the spacecraft bus for spacecraft level testing, including additional thermal vacuum testing. The results from the spacecraft level thermal vacuum test will further inform the instrument thermal model, ensuring accurate flight temperature predictions. StarBurst launches as a secondary payload in 2027 and has a mission duration of at least one year.

Transient Studies of G-Induced Capillary Dryout and Rewet

A transient, one-dimensional numerical code is developed to model the liquid motion in an axial groove with square cross section. Axial variation in liquid level, shear stress and heat transfer between the groove wall and the liquid, evaporation and transient body forces are accounted for in the model. Dryout and rewet of the groove are allowed; the front location is determined numerically using conservation of mass and linear extrapolation. Several numerical test results are presented and discussed.

Hematite Is a Mineralogical Marker of Ancient Climate Change on Mars

The ancient climate of Mars changed from warm to cold surface conditions. This climate transition is demonstrated by geomorphological evidence, but lacks suitable mineralogical indicators. We investigate the crystallographic properties of hematite (iron oxide) in Gale crater, measured by the Curiosity rover, and compare them to laboratory experiments. Hematite crystallite sizes are ~5 to ~65 nm in the oldest sedimentary rocks investigated by the rover (the Murray formation) and <10 nm in the younger overlying strata (Mirador and Carolyn Shoemaker formations). We attribute the larger crystallites in the Murray formation to post-depositional coarsening by groundwater in warm and wet conditions, which persisted for several million years. Hematite with small crystallites co-occurs with goethite (iron oxyhydroxide) in the overlying layers, consistent with colder and water- limited conditions.

Chapter 12A - Rotorcraft Flight Envelope Unique Considerations

As noted in Section 12, the term flight envelope is used to refer to the boundaries of aircraft loading and flight conditions within which operation of the aircraft is satisfactory, and beyond which some aspect becomes unacceptable. Each aircraft has its own peculiar set of operating conditions and limitations, and this is particularly true of rotorcraft. In addition to the concerns of the fixed wing aircraft test engineer, the helicopter test engineer has to be concerned with dynamic components such as main and tail rotors and their associated control components, transmissions, noise, vibrations, and environmental factors such as swirling particulates which can cause visual obscuration and/or aircraft erosion when operating in unprepared areas like desert, snow, or over salt water. Operation in the hover/low speed regime is a unique capability and is therefore the forte of the helicopter. This "new" regime has its own envelope concerns. This Section provides a brief overview of some of the considerations when establishing/expanding the flight envelope of a rotorcraft. Types of tests and maneuvers, instrumentation, and special considerations will be discussed. However, the reader must be aware that this Section is far from a complete description of all the factors which must be considered in establishing a rotorcraft flight envelope. Much of the material presented in Section 12 is pertinent to rotorcraft envelope definition.
