Restoring the discontinuous heat equation source using sparse boundary data and dynamic sensors

Abstract This study focuses on addressing the inverse source problem associated with the parabolic equation. We rely on sparse boundary flux data as our measurements, which are acquired from a restricted section of the boundary. While it has been established that utilizing sparse boundary flux data can enable source recovery, the presence of a limited number of observation sensors poses a challenge for accurately tracing the inverse quantity of interest. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a sampling algorithm grounded in Langevin dynamics that incorporates dynamic sensors to capture the flux information. Furthermore, we propose and discuss two distinct dynamic sensor migration strategies. Remarkably, our findings demonstrate that even with only two observation sensors at our disposal, it remains feasible to successfully reconstruct the high-dimensional unknown parameters.

Exact restoration of Galilei invariance in density functional calculations with quantum Monte Carlo

We investigate some aspects of the connection between mean-field and ab-initio calculations for any-nucleon systems employing the Gogny effective interaction. In particular, we present variational Monte Carlo calculations of 4 He and 16 O, for which we extended the formalism of the linear method to the case of a density-dependent Hamiltonian. Monte Carlo calculations using an uncorrelated basis reduce to Hartree-Fock ones, but Galilean invariance can be preserved, contrary to the usual treatment. An analysis of the results obtained with the Gogny force when used in conjunction with correlated wave functions has also been performed. Here, the calculations show the collapse of the deuteron, leading to a set of unphysical predictions for the structure of heavier nuclei. This behavior remarks the different role of the Gogny effective interaction as compared to bare interactions typically used in fully microscopic calculations.

Estimated impacts of forest restoration scenarios on smoke exposures among outdoor agricultural workers in California

Abstract As wildfires continue to worsen across western United States, forest managers are increasingly employing prescribed burns as a way to reduce excess fuels and future wildfire risk. While the ecological benefits of these fuel treatments are clear, little is known about the smoke exposure tradeoffs of using prescribed burns to mitigate wildfires, particularly among at-risk populations. Outdoor agricultural workers are a population at increased risk of smoke exposure because of their time spent outside and the physical demands of their work. Here, we assess the smoke exposure impacts among outdoor agricultural workers resulting from the implementation of six forest management scenarios proposed for a landscape in the Central Sierra, California. We leverage emissions estimates from LANDIS-II to model daily PM 2.5 concentrations with the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model (HYSPLIT) and link those to agricultural employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We find a u-shaped result, in that moderate amounts of prescribed burning result in the greatest reduction in total smoke exposure among outdoor agricultural workers, particularly during months of peak agricultural activity due to wildfire-specific smoke reductions. The reduction in total smoke exposure, relative to scenarios with the least amount of management, decreases as more prescribed burning is applied to the landscape due to the contributions of the fuel treatments themselves to overall smoke burden. The results of this analysis may contribute to preparedness efforts aimed at reducing smoke exposures among outdoor agricultural workers, while also informing forest management planning for this specific landscape.

High-precision mass measurement of 103 Sn restores smoothness of the mass surface

As a step towards the ultimate goal of a high-precision mass measurement of doubly magic 100 Sn, the mass of 103 Sn was measured at the Low Energy Beam and Ion Trap (LEBIT) located at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). Utilizing the time-of-flight ion cyclotron resonance technique, a mass uncertainty of 3.7 keV was achieved, an improvement by more than an order of magnitude compared to a recent measurement performed in 2023 at the Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe) in Lanzhou. Although the LEBIT and CSRe mass measurements of 103 Sn are in agreement, they diverge from the experimental mass value reported in the 2016 version of the Atomic Mass Evaluation (AME2016), which was derived from the measured 𝑄 𝛽 + value and the mass of 103 In. In AME2020, this indirectly measured 103 Sn mass was classified as a “seriously irregular mass” and replaced with an extrapolated value, which aligns with the most recent measured values from CSRe and LEBIT. As such, the smoothness of the mass surface is confidently reestablished for 103 Sn. Here, LEBIT's mass measurement of 103 Sn enabled a significant reduction in the mass uncertainties of five parent isotopes which are now dominated by uncertainties in their respective 𝑄 values.
