Patient-Reported Toxicity and Quality-of-Life Profiles in Patients With Head and Neck Cancer Treated With Definitive Radiation Therapy or Chemoradiation

Radiation therapy is an effective but burdensome treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC). We aimed to characterize the severity and time pattern of patient-reported symptoms and quality of life in a large cohort of patients with HNC treated with definitive radiation therapy, with or without systemic treatment.

ALKBH5-Modified HMGB1-STING Activation Contributes to Radiation Induced Liver Disease via Innate Immune Response

Radiation therapy, which is vital for the treatment of primary liver cancer, comes with unavoidable liver injury, which limits its implementation. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation is involved in many molecular functions. However, its role in radiation-induced liver diseases (RILD) remains unknown. Herein, we investigate the role of m6A methylation in RILD.

Developing a Peptide That Inhibits DNA Repair by Blocking the Binding of Artemis and DNA Ligase IV to Enhance Tumor Radiosensitivity

Artemis and DNA Ligase IV are 2 critical elements in the nonhomologous end joining pathway of DNA repair, acting as the nuclease and DNA ligase, respectively. Enhanced cellular radiosensitivity by inhibition of either protein contributes to a promising approach to develop molecular targeted radiosensitizers. The interaction between Artemis and DNA Ligase IV is required for the activation of Artemis as nuclease at 3’overhang DNA; thus, we aim to generate an inhibitory peptide targeting the interaction between Artemis and DNA Ligase IV for novel radiosensitizer development.

The Influence of Patient–Provider Language Concordance in Cancer Care: Results of the Hispanic Outcomes by Language Approach (HOLA) Randomized Trial

Delivering linguistically competent care is critical to serving patients who have limited English proficiency (LEP) and represents a key national strategy to help reduce health disparities. Current acceptable standards of communication with patients who have LEP include providers communicating through professional interpretive services or bilingual providers speaking the patients’ preferred language directly. This randomized clinical trial tests the effect of patient-provider language concordance on patient satisfaction.

Preoperative Radiosurgery for Resected Brain Metastases: The PROPS-BM Multicenter Cohort Study

Preoperative radiosurgery (SRS) is a feasible alternative to postoperative SRS, with potential benefits in adverse radiation effect (ARE) and leptomeningeal disease (LMD) relapse. However, previous studies are limited by small patient numbers and single-institution designs. Our aim was to evaluate preoperative SRS outcomes and prognostic factors from a large multicenter cohort (Preoperative Radiosurgery for Brain Metastases [PROPS-BM]).

Clinical Value of Upfront Cranial Radiation Therapy in Osimertinib-Treated Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor–Mutant Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer With Brain Metastases

As a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), osimertinib has a powerful ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and a high potency for controlling brain metastases (BMs) from EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The clinical value of cranial radiation therapy in osimertinib-treated NSCLC with BMs remains largely unknown.

The Irradiated Brain Volume Within 12 Gy Is a Predictor for Radiation-Induced Changes After Stereotactic Radiosurgery in Patients With Unruptured Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations

Our purpose was to determine whether the coverage of brain parenchyma within the 12 Gy radiosurgical volume (V12) correlates with the development of radiation-induced changes (RICs) in patients with unruptured cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM) after undergoing stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).

Prognostic Importance of MRI-Detected Extramural Venous Invasion in Rectal Cancer: A Literature Review and Systematic Meta-Analysis

Extramural venous invasion (EMVI) is recognized as a poor prognostic factor in rectal cancer. There are well-documented limitations associated with pathology detection of EMVI, including variable reporting and the inability to use it preoperatively to guide neoadjuvant treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-detected EMVI (mrEMVI) has been proposed as an imaging biomarker. This review assesses the prognostic significance of mrEMVI on survival outcomes and whether regression of mrEMVI after neoadjuvant therapy is associated with improvements in survival.

Practice Consolidation Among U.S. Radiation Oncologists Over Time

Health care practices across the United States have been consolidating in response to various market forces. The degree of practice consolidation varies widely across specialties but has not been well studied within radiation oncology. This study used Medicare data to characterize the extent of practice consolidation among radiation oncologists and to investigate associated market factors.

Modulation of Neuroinflammation by Low-Dose Radiation Therapy in an Animal Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Recently, several studies have reported that low-dose radiation therapy (RT) suppresses the release of proinflammatory cytokines in inflammatory-degenerative disorders, including Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is the most common cause of dementia, and neuroinflammation is one of the major contributing factors in AD pathogenesis. Therefore, low-dose RT may be used clinically for treating AD. However, the appropriate doses, effects, and underlying mechanisms of RT in AD have not been determined. In this study, we aimed to determine the appropriate RT dose and schedule for AD treatment and to investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of low-dose RT in AD.

Prognostic Implications of MRI-Detected EMVI and Tumor Deposits and Their Response to Neoadjuvant Therapy in cT3 and cT4 Rectal Cancer

Magnetic resonance imaging–detected extramural venous invasion (mrEMVI) and tumor deposits (TDs) are risk factors for the development of local recurrence and distant metastases (DMs) in rectal cancer. However, little is known about their response to neoadjuvant treatment and its relation to oncologic outcomes. This study evaluated the incidence and features of mrEMVI and TDs before and after neoadjuvant treatment in relation to the development of local recurrence and DMs.
