Magnetic suspension and balance system study

A compact design for a superconducting magnetic suspension and balance system is developed for a 8 ft. x 8 ft. transonic wind tunnel. The main features of the design are: a compact superconducting solenoid in the suspended airplane model; permanent magnet wings; one common liquid helium dewar for all superconducting coils; efficient new race track coils for roll torques; use of established 11 kA cryostable AC conductor; acceptable AC losses during 10 Hz control even with all steel structure; and a 560 liter/hour helium liquefier. Considerable design simplicity, reduced magnet weights, and reduced heat leak results from using one common dewar which eliminates most heavy steel structure between coils and the suspended model. Operational availability is thought to approach 100% for such magnet systems. The weight and cost of the magnet system is approximately one-third that of previous less compact designs.

Pivoting and slip in an angular contact bearing

Pivoting slips are calculated for the ball-race and ball-ball contacts in a retainerless bearing. The calculation is kinematic, ignoring all inertial loadings. Pure spin and uniform precession of the balls are considered. Pivoting slip magnitudes are compared with several other kinds of slip which were previously reported in an R4 size bearing. Previously announced in STAR as N83-26079

Assessment of the operating characteristics of the SSME LOX turbopump pump-end bearing

A bearing/shaft model of the SSME LOX turbopump was developed using the SHABERTH bearing/shaft math modeling computer code. A previously developed bearing/shaft thermal model of the SSME LOX turbopump turbine and bearing was used in conjunction with SHABERTH to evaluate the thermomechanical operating characteristics of the LOX turbopump end bearings. Results show that for the two unmounted diametrical clearances evaluated (4.0 mils and 6.3 mils), the inboard pump end bearing supports about 81% of the isolator load for the small clearance and 77% of the isolator load for the larger clearance. Bearing clearance changes due to thermal effects were 40% for the 4.0 mil diametrical clearance case and 19% for the 6.3 mil clearance case evaluated. The thermal analysis included evaluation of bearing temperatures for a subcooled case and a saturated case. Results indicate that no drastic temperature change occurred between the two cases. Since the rolling element and race surfaces of the subcooled case were at temperatures sufficiently high enough to be vapor blanketed, exceeding saturation temperature at the bearing inlet did not increase surface temperatures greatly.

Active Optical Sounding of Ozone and Minor Constituents in the Middle Atmosphere: a Review of Ground-based Lidar Measurements

Due to the rapid development of powerful laser sources in the UV wavelength range which includes nd:yag pumped dye lasers and excimer lasers, ground-based lidar systems are now operational for ozone monitoring in the troposphere and the stratosphere. Such systems will play an important role in the determination of long term ozone trends in the photochemical region. The capacities of active lidar systems in terms of high temporal and spatial resolution and measurements continuity, allow the observation of the ozone variations at various time and space scales which are important in present day areas of interest. The already operational character of the lidar systems will constitute the basis for development of a ground-base network for middle atmospheric observations of ozone and other race gases.

Lubrication and performance of high-speed rolling-element bearings

Trends in aircraft engine operating speeds have dictated the need for rolling-element bearings capable of speeds to 3 million DN. A review of high-speed rolling-element bearing state-of-the-art performance and lubrication is presented. Through the use of under-race lubrication and bearing thermal management bearing operation can be obtained to speeds of 3 million DN. Jet lubricated ball bearings are limited to 2.5 million DN for large bore sizes and to 3 million DN for small bore sizes. Current computer programs are able to predict bearing thermal performance.

The properties of thin-section, four-point-contact ball bearings in space

Thin section, four-point-contact ball bearings are increasinly employed in spacecraft mechanisms because of the potential advantages they offer. However, litte was previously known of their torque, thermal conductance and stiffness properties at conditions anticipated for their use in space. An investigation of these properties are described. It was found that frictional (Coulomb) torque, thermal conductance and stiffness all show marked dependence on the bearing preload, the housing design, the bearing external fit (i.e., free fit or interference) and on the thermal gradient across the races. Optimum bearing performance is achieved only if these properties are well understood. The necessary data to understand these properties are provided.

Planetary-gear-support bearing test rig design

A test rig was designed to evaluate the performance of a spherical roller bearing with a geared outer ring operating under conditions similar to those of a planet bearing in a helicopter transmission. The configuration is an extension of the widely accepted four-square gearbox arrangement. It provides for testing of two bearings simultaneously with outer ring rotation, misalignment, diametrically opposed loading through the gear teeth, and under race lubrication. Instrumentation permits the measurement of inner and outer ring temperature, bearing drag torque, degree of misalignment, outer ring speed, cage speed, and applied load.

Telescoping Space-Station Modules

New telescoping-space-station design involves module within a module. After being carried to orbit within payload bay of Space Shuttle orbiter, outer module telescopically deployed to achieve nearly twice as much usable space-station volume per Space Shuttle launch. Closed-loop or "race-track" space-station configurations possible with this concept and provide additional benefits. One benefit involves making one of modules double-walled haven safe from debris, radiation, and like. Module accessible from either end, and readily available to all positions in space station. Concept also provides flexibility in methods in which Space Shuttle orbiter docked or berthed with space station and decrease chances of damage.

Turbomachinery incipient failure dynamic detection indicators and analysis

Tape recorded signals from case-mounted accelerometers are examined to determine the feasibility of detecting spalls on bearing balls in the liquid oxygen (LOX) pump in the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The nonperiodic nature of the spall impact on inner and outer bearing races caused traditional techniques to be unsuccessful. A technique involving statistical techniques and spectra ratios was used to review available pump test tapes.

Elbow and knee joint for hard space suits

An elbow or knee joint for a hard space suit or similar usage is formed of three serially connected rigid sections which have truncated spherical configurations. The ends of each section form solid geometric angles, and the sections are interconnected by hermetically sealed ball bearings. The outer two sections are fixed together for rotation in a direction opposite to rotation of the center section. A preferred means to make the outer sections track each other in rotation comprises a rotatable continuous bead chain which engages sockets circumferentially spaced on the facing sides of the outer races of the bearings. The joint has a single pivot point and the bearing axes are always contained in a single plane for any articulation of the joint. Thus flexure of the joint simulates the coplanar flexure of the knee or elbow and is not susceptible to lockup.

Mode II fatigue crack growth specimen development

A Mode II test specimen was developed which has potential application in understanding phemonena associated with mixed mode fatigue failures in high performance aircraft engine bearing races. The attributes of the specimen are: it contains one single ended notch, which simplifies data gathering and reduction; the fatigue crack grows in-line with the direction of load application; a single axis test machine is sufficient to perform testing; and the Mode I component is vanishingly small.

Protecting a Ball-Bearing-Deflection Monitor

Deflectometer probe monitors deflection of ball-bearing race in liquid oxygen with aid of small window or diaphragm. Diaphragm or window isolates optical deflectometer from liquid oxygen or other fluid in ball bearing. At high pressures, diaphragm integral part of housing preferable to window, since there would be no leakage.

Instability of an intershaft squeeze film damper in a two-spool rotor dynamics simulator

An instability associated with an intershaft squeeze film damper is described. The squeeze film is located between the intershaft bearing outer race and the low-speed shaft of a five-bearing, two-spool test rig. The instability is dominated by response of the third system mode to destabilizing excitation of the type described by Hibner, et al. Installing a spring cage in place of the intershaft damper removes the instability and produces satisfactory performance throughout the operating range.

Characterization of neurospora circadian rhythms in space

To determine whether the circadian rhythm of conidiation in neurospora crassa is endogenously derived or is driven by some geophysical time cue, an experiment was conducted on space shuttle flight STS-9, where inoculated race tubes were exposed to the microgravity environment of space. The results demonstated that the rhythm can persist in space. However, there were several minor alterations noted; an increase in the period of the oscillation and the variability of the growth rate and a diminished rhythm amplitude, which eventually damped out in 25% of the flight tubes. On day seven of the flight, the tubes were exposed to light while their growth fronts were marked. It appears that some aspects of this marking process reinstated a robust rhythm in all the tubes which continued throughout the remainder of the flight. It was hypothesized that the damping found prior to the marking procedure on STS-9 may have been a result of the hypergravity pulse of launch and not due to the microgravity of the orbital lab; furthermore, that the marking procedure, by exposing the samples to light, had reinstated rhythmicity. To test this, an investigation was conducted into the effects of acute and chronic exposure to hypergravity.

Zero-Deadband Ball Bearings

Proposed supports for ball bearings press outer races against balls without radial clearance. Diaphragm-like axially flexible springs eliminate deadband and consequent nonlinear radial vibrational response of rotor. If shaft needs two bearings at each end, they are supported independently or connected in series by U-spring. Mechanical stops limit axial travel of shaft.
