Trellis coded modulation for 4800-9600 bps transmission over a fading mobile satellite channel

The combination of trellis coding and multiple phase-shift-keyed (MPSK) signalling with the addition of asymmetry to the signal set is discussed with regard to its suitability as a modulation/coding scheme for the fading mobile satellite channel. For MPSK, introducing nonuniformity (asymmetry) into the spacing between signal points in the constellation buys a further improvement in performance over that achievable with trellis coded symmetric MPSK, all this without increasing average or peak power, or changing the bandwidth constraints imposed on the system. Whereas previous contributions have considered the performance of trellis coded modulation transmitted over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, the emphasis in the paper is on the performance of trellis coded MPSK in the fading environment. The results will be obtained by using a combination of analysis and simulation. It will be assumed that the effect of the fading on the phase of the received signal is fully compensated for either by tracking it with some form of phase-locked loop or with pilot tone calibration techniques. Thus, results will reflect only the degradation due to the effect of the fading on the amplitude of the received signal. Also, we shall consider only the case where interleaving/deinterleaving is employed to further combat the fading. This allows for considerable simplification of the analysis and is of great practical interest. Finally, the impact of the availability of channel state information on average bit error probability performance is assessed.

Improved carrier tracking by smoothing estimators

Smoothing as a way to improve the carrier phase estimation is proposed and analyzed. The performance of first and second order Kalman optimum smoothers are investigated. This performance is evaluated in terms of steady state covariance error computation, dynamic tracking, and noise response. It is shown that with practical amounts of memory, a second order smoother can have a position error due to an acceleration or jerk step input less than any prescribed maximum. As an example of importance to the NASA Deep Space Network, a second order smoother can be used to track the Voyager spacecraft at Uranus and Neptune encounters with significantly better performance than a second order phase locked loop.

Phase lock acquisition for sampled data PLLs using the sweep technique

Simulation results of the swept-acquisition performance of residual carrier phase-locked loops (PLLs) are reported. The loops investigated are sampled data counterparts of the continuous time type II and III loops currently in use in Deep Space Network receivers. It was found that sweep rates of 0.2 B(sub L)(2) to 0.4 B(sub L)(2) Hz/s can be used, depending on the loop parameters and loop signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), where B(sub L) is the one-sided loop noise bandwidth. Type III loops are shown to be not as reliable as type II loops for acquisition using this technique, especially at low SNRs.

Performance of PLL synchronized optical PPM communication systems

Receiver timing synchronization of an optical PPM communication system can be achieved using a phase-locked loop (PLL) if the photodetector output is properly processed. The synchronization performance is shown to improve with increasing signal power and decreasing loop bandwidth. The bit error rate performance of the PLL synchronized PPM system is analyzed and compared to that of the perfectly synchronized system. It is shown that the increase in signal power needed to compensate for the imperfect sychronization is small (less than 0.1 dB) for loop bandwidths less than 0.1 percent of the slot frequency.

Burst-Locked Oscillator Avoids Side Lock

Counting circuit corrects errors when side lock occurs. Digital error-detection-and-correction circuit in color-television oscillator circuit provides synchronization when color-burst frequency drifts outside normal tolerance. Digital side-lock-prevention circuit used in television color-burst phase-lock-loop oscillator provides greater tolerance of off-frequency signals than crystal-controlled oscillators.

Ultrasonic characterization of the nonlinear elastic properties of unidirectional graphite/epoxy composites

The theoretical treatment of linear and nonlinear elasticity in a unidirectionally fiber reinforced composite as well as measurements for a unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite (T300/5208) are presented. Linear elastic properties were measured by both ultrasonic and strain gage measurements. The nonlinear properties were determined by measuring changes in ultrasonic natural phase velocity with a pulsed phase locked loop interferometer as a function of stress and temperature. These measurements provide the basis for further investigations into the relationship between nonlinear elastic properties and other important properties such as strength and fiber-matrix interfacial stength in graphite/epoxy composites.

An amplitude modulated laser system for distance and displacement measurement

A laser distance and displacement measurement system is being developed to monitor small displacements in large space structures for strain analysis and structural control. The reflected laser beam is focused on a detector and the detected signal is mixed with the reference. Small displacements are indicated by a change in modulation frequency which is adjusted to maintain quadrature between the received signal and the reference signal from the voltage-controlled oscillator in a phase-locked loop. Measurement of absolute distance is accomplished by sweeping the modulation frequency from a quadrature lock point to an adjacent lock point.

Bandwidth and power efficient satellite TDMA demodulator and decoder

A proof-of-concept demodulator for TDMA applications requiring high total data rates composed of many low data rate users is proposed. High-spectrum efficiency is obtained via a bandwidth efficient combined modulation and coding system, and low TDMA overhead is obtained via a fast acquiring digital phase lock loop. The system employs a data rate of 200 Mb/s with a bit error rate of better than 5 x 10 to the -7th in the presence of adjacent channel interference 20 dB above the weakest user. The 8-PSK modulation combined with the rate 5/6 forward error correction coding results in a bandwidth efficiency of better than 2 bits/second per Hz.

Fiber optic sensor technology - An opportunity for smart aerospace structures

Fiber optic sensors provide the opportunity for fabricating materials with internal sensors which can serve as lifetime health monitors, analogous to a central nervous system. The embedded fiber optic sensors can be interrogated by various techniques to measure internal strain, temperature, pressure, acoustic waves and other parameters indicative of structural integrity. Experiments have been conducted with composite samples with embedded sensors to measure strain using optical time domain reflectometry, modal interference and an optical phase locked loop. Fiber optic sensors have been developed to detect acoustic emission and impact damage and have been demonstrated for cure monitoring. These sensors have the potential for lifetime monitoring of structural properties, providing real time nondestructive evaluation.

High-dynamic GPS tracking

The results of comparing four different frequency estimation schemes in the presence of high dynamics and low carrier-to-noise ratios are given. The comparison is based on measured data from a hardware demonstration. The tested algorithms include a digital phase-locked loop, a cross-product automatic frequency tracking loop, and extended Kalman filter, and finally, a fast Fourier transformation-aided cross-product frequency tracking loop. The tracking algorithms are compared on their frequency error performance and their ability to maintain lock during severe maneuvers at various carrier-to-noise ratios. The measured results are shown to agree with simulation results carried out and reported previously.

Optical Communication with Semiconductor Laser Diode

Theoretical and experimental performance limits of a free-space direct detection optical communication system were studied using a semiconductor laser diode as the optical transmitter and a silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) as the receiver photodetector. Optical systems using these components are under consideration as replacements for microwave satellite communication links. Optical pulse position modulation (PPM) was chosen as the signal format. An experimental system was constructed that used an aluminum gallium arsenide semiconductor laser diode as the transmitter and a silicon avalanche photodiode photodetector. The system used Q=4 PPM signaling at a source data rate of 25 megabits per second. The PPM signal format requires regeneration of PPM slot clock and word clock waveforms in the receiver. A nearly exact computational procedure was developed to compute receiver bit error rate without using the Gaussion approximation. A transition detector slot clock recovery system using a phase lock loop was developed and implemented. A novel word clock recovery system was also developed. It was found that the results of the nearly exact computational procedure agreed well with actual measurements of receiver performance. The receiver sensitivity achieved was the closest to the quantum limit yet reported for an optical communication system of this type.

The use of interleaving for reducing radio loss in trellis-coded modulation systems

It is demonstrated how the use of interleaving/deinterleaving in trellis-coded modulation (TCM) systems can reduce the signal-to-noise ratio loss due to imperfect carrier demodulation references. Both the discrete carrier (phase-locked loop) and suppressed carrier (Costas loop) cases are considered and the differences between the two are clearly demonstrated by numerical results. These results are of great importance for future communication links to the Deep Space Network (DSN), especially from high Earth orbiters, which may be bandwidth limited.

Supersonic rectangular jet impingement noise experiments

The discrete frequency sound produced by jets issuing from a convergent, rectangular nozzle of aspect ratio 4.24 was investigated. Experiments were performed both with the free jet and with the jet impinging on a hard ground surface. The impingement tones that dominate the impinging jet spectra show a definite staging behavior which appears to be biased toward the free jet screech frequency once the separation distance exceeds the region of substantial shock cell development. The frequency variation of the impingement tone stages fit the details of a feedback cycle if the disturbance convection velocity is chosen to be 20 percent higher than that necessary to satisfy the screech feedback loop. Phase locked optical records show a flapping mode of jet oscillation with tones at or near the screech frequency, with superimposed symmetric oscillations when a second dominant tone of unrelated frequency appears in the spectrum.

Analog circuit for the measurement of phase difference between two noisy sine-wave signals

A simple circuit was designed to measure the phase difference between two noisy sine waves. It locks over a wide range of frequencies and produces an output proportional to the phase difference of rapidly varying signals. A square wave locked in frequency and phase to the first signal is produced by a phase-locked loop and is amplified by an operational amplifier.

Strain and dynamic measurements using fiber optic sensors embedded into graphite/epoxy tubes

Graphite/epoxy tubes were fabricated with embedded optical fibers to evaluate the feasibility of monitoring strains with a fiber optic technique. Resistance strain gauges were attached to the tubes to measure strain at four locations along the tube for comparison with the fiber optic sensors. Both static and dynamic strain measurements were made with excellent agreement between the embedded fiber optic strain sensor and the strain gauges. Strain measurements of 10(exp -7) can be detected with the optical phase locked loop (OPLL) system using optical fiber. Because of their light weight, compatibility with composites, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and based on the static and dynamic results obtained, fiber optic sensors embedded in composites may be useful as the sensing component of smart structures.
