Magnetic dilution effect and topological phase transitions in (Mn 1- x Pb x )Bi 2 Te 4

We report, as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator, MnBi 2 Te 4 has provided a material platform to realize various emergent phenomena arising from the interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, by investigating (Mn 1-x Pb x )Bi 2 Te 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.82) single crystals via the x-ray, electrical transport, magnetometry and neutron measurements, chemical analysis, external pressure, and first-principles calculations, we reveal the magnetic dilution effect on the magnetism and band topology in MnBi 2 Te 4 . With increasing x, both lattice parameters a and c expand linearly by around 2%. All samples undergo the paramagnetic to A-type antiferromagnetic transition with the Néel temperature decreasing lineally from 24 K at x = 0 to 2 K at x = 0.82. Our neutron data refinement of the x = 0.37 sample indicates that the ordered moment is 4.3(1)μ B /Mn at 4.85 K and the amount of the Mn Bi antisites is negligible within the error bars. Isothermal magnetization data reveal a slight decrease of the interlayer plane-plane antiferromagnetic exchange interaction and a monotonic decrease of the magnetic anisotropy due to diluting magnetic ions and enlarging the unit cell. For x = 0.37, the application of external pressures enhances the interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling, boosting the Néel temperature at a rate of 1.4 K/GPa and the saturation field at a rate of 1.8 T/GPa. Furthermore, our first-principles calculations reveal that the band inversion in the two end materials, MnBi 2 Te 4 and PbBi 2 Te 4 , occurs at the Γ and Z point, respectively, while two gapless points appear at x = 0.44 and x = 0.66, suggesting possible topological phase transitions with doping.

Coexistence of low and high spin states in La 18 Co 28 Pb 3

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of a newly predicted stable ternary compound La 18 ⁢Co 28 ⁢Pb 3 are studied using electronic structure analysis. The ground state of this compound is ferromagnetic, with three positions of nonequivalent magnetic Co atoms. A strong dependence of magnetic properties on volume shows that this system is situated near the point of magnetic instability. The coexistence of high- and low-spin ferromagnetic states as a function of volume near equilibrium was discovered. A corresponding spin tunneling splitting was estimated. The stability of the theoretically predicted magnetic ground state was tested by varying the Hubbard parameter. The thermal spin fluctuations were added to estimate the paramagnetic moment and a Curie temperature. Finally, the necessity of experimental verification of the obtained results is emphasized.

Correlations of azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics with subevent cumulants in p Pb collisions at s N N = 8.16 TeV

Event-by-event long-range correlations of azimuthal anisotropy Fourier coefficients ($v_n$) in 8.16 TeV p Pb data, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, are extracted using a subevent four-particle cumulant technique applied to very low multiplicity events. Each combination of four charged particles is selected from either two, three, or four distinct subevent regions of a pseudorapidity range from -2.4 to 2.4 of the CMS tracker, and with transverse momentum between 0.3 and 3.0 GeV. Using the subevent cumulant technique, correlations between $v_n$ of different orders are measured as functions of particle multiplicity and compared to the standard cumulant method without subevents over a wide event multiplicity range. At high multiplicities, the $v_2$ and $v_3$ coefficients exhibit an anticorrelation; this behavior is observed consistently using various methods. The $v_2$ and $v_4$ correlation strength is found to depend on the number of subevents used in the calculation. As the event multiplicity decreases, the results from different subevent methods diverge because of different contributions of noncollective or few-particle correlations. Correlations extracted with the four-subevent method exhibit a tendency to diminish monotonically toward the lowest multiplicity region (about 20 charged tracks) investigated. These findings extend previous studies to a significantly lower event multiplicity range and establish the evidence for the onset of long-range collective multiparticle correlations in small system collisions.

Transfer reactions in 206 $\mathrm{Pb}$ + 118 $\mathrm{Sn}$: From quasielastic to deep-inelastic processes

Here, we measured multinucleon transfer reactions for the 206 Pb+ 118 Sn system at E lab =1200 MeV by employing the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Differential and total cross sections and Q-value distributions have been obtained for a variety of neutron and proton pick-up and stripping channels. The Q-value distributions show how the quasi-elastic and deep inelastic processes depend on the mass and charge of the transfer products. The corresponding cross sections have been compared with calculations performed with the GRAZING code. An overall good agreement is found for most of the few nucleon transfer channels. The underestimation of the data for channels involving a large number of transferred nucleons indicates that more complicated processes populate the given isotopes.

Formation of transfermium elements in reactions with Pb 208

Within the Langevin framework, we investigate the dynamics of the fusion process for production of transfermium elements in reactions of Ca 48 , Ti 50 , Cr 54 , and Fe 58 with Pb 208 . After the reacting nuclei have made contact, the early dynamical stage is dominated by the dissipation of the initial radial kinetic energy, while the subsequent shape evolution is diffusive. The probability for surmounting the inner barrier and forming a compound system is obtained by simulating the evolution as a Metropolis random walk in a five-dimensional potential-energy landscape. Good agreement with the available data is obtained, especially for the maximal formation probability. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Investigating strangeness enhancement in jet and medium via 𝜙⁡(1020) production in 𝑝-Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02TeV

This work aims to differentiate strangeness produced from hard processes (jetlike) and softer processes (underlying event) by measuring the angular correlation between a high-momentum trigger hadron (ℎ) acting as a jet proxy and a produced strange hadron [𝜙⁡(1020) meson]. Measuring ℎ−𝜙 correlations at midrapidity in 𝑝-Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02TeV as a function of event multiplicity provides insight into the microscopic origin of strangeness enhancement in small collision systems. The jetlike and the underlying-event-like strangeness production are investigated as a function of event multiplicity. They are also compared between a lower and higher momentum region. The evolutions of the per-trigger yields within the near-side (aligned with the trigger hadron) and away-side (in the opposite direction of the trigger hadron) jets are studied separately, allowing for the characterization of two distinct jetlike production regimes. Furthermore, the ℎ−𝜙 correlations within the underlying event give access to a production regime dominated by soft production processes, which can be compared directly to the in-jet production. Comparisons between ℎ−𝜙 and dihadron correlations show that the observed strangeness enhancement is largely driven by the underlying event, where the 𝜙/ℎ ratio is significantly larger than within the jet regions. As multiplicity increases, the fraction of the total 𝜙⁡(1020) yield coming from jets decreases compared to the underlying event production, leading to high-multiplicity events being dominated by the increased strangeness production from the underlying event.

Bottomonium suppression in 5.02 and 8.16 TeV 𝑝-Pb collisions

Here, we compute the suppression of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆), ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆), and ϒ⁡(3⁢𝑆) states in 𝑝-Pb collisions relative to 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions, including nuclear parton distribution function (nPDF) effects, coherent energy loss, momentum broadening, and final-state interactions in the quark-gluon plasma. We employ the EPPS21 nPDFs and calculate the uncertainty resulting from variation over the associated error sets. To compute coherent energy loss and momentum broadening, we follow the approach of Arleo, Peigne, and collaborators. The 3+1⁢D viscous hydrodynamical background evolution of the quark-gluon plasma is generated by anisotropic hydrodynamics. The in-medium suppression of bottomonium in the quark-gluon plasma is computed using a next-to-leading-order open quantum system framework formulated within potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. We find that inclusion of all these effects provides a reasonable description of experimental data from the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb Collaborations for the suppression of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆), ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆), and ϒ⁡(3⁢𝑆) as a function of both transverse momentum and rapidity.

Quest for Cooper Pair Transfer in Heavy-Ion Reactions: The 206 Pb + 118 Sn Case

In this Letter we report on effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations probed in nucleon transfer reactions with heavy ions. We measured with high efficiency and resolution a complete set of observables for neutron transfer channels in the ²⁰⁶Pb + ¹¹⁸Sn system employing a large solid angle magnetic spectrometer, which allowed us to study a wide range of internuclear distances via a detailed excitation function. The coupled channel theory, based on an independent particle transfer mechanism, follows the experimental transfer probabilities for one- and two-neutron pick-up and stripping channels. The experimental two-neutron transfer cross sections indicate that in reactions between pair-vibrational (closed shell) and pair-rotational (open shell) nuclei, correlations manifest via pair-addition and pair-removal modes, which constitute one of the elementary modes of excitations in nuclei.

Deformation and Collectivity in Doubly Magic 208 Pb

Lead-208 is the heaviest known doubly magic nucleus and its structure is therefore of special interest. Despite this magicity, which acts to provide a strong restorative force toward sphericity, it is known to exhibit both strong octupole correlations and some of the strongest quadrupole collectivity observed in doubly magic systems. In this Letter, we employ state-of-the-art experimental equipment to conclusively demonstrate, through four Coulomb-excitation measurements, the presence of a large, negative, spectroscopic quadrupole moment for both the vibrational octupole 3$^{−}_{1}$ and quadrupole 2$^{+}_{1}$ state, indicative of a preference for prolate deformation of the states. The observed quadrupole moment is discussed in the context of the expected splitting of the 3 − ⊗3 − two-phonon states, due to the coupling of the quadrupole and octupole motion. These results are compared with theoretical values from three different methods, which are unable to reproduce both the sign and magnitude of this deformation. Thus, in spite of its well-studied nature, 208 Pb remains a puzzle for our understanding of nuclear structure.

Highly tunable band inversion in AB 2 X 4 (A=Ge, Sn, Pb; B=As, Sb, Bi; X=Se, Te) compounds

Topological materials have been discovered so far largely by searching for existing compounds in crystallographic databases, but there are potentially new topological materials with desirable features that have not been synthesized. One of the desirable features is high tunability resulting from the band inversion with a very small direct band gap, which can be tuned by changes in pressure or strain to induce a topological phase transition. Here, using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have studied the septuple layered AB 2 X 4 series compounds, where A=(Ge, Sn and Pb), B=(As, Sb and Bi), and X=(Se and Te). With the DFT thermodynamic stability validated by the already-reported compounds in these series, we predict stable Se compounds, which are not found in crystallographic database. Among them, we find that GeBi 2 Se 4 and GeSb 2 Se 4 having a small direct band gap at the Z point are very close to a strong topological insulator, which can be tuned by a moderate pressure to induce the band inversion. Importantly, the topological features with the small direct band gap are well isolated in both momentum and energy windows, which offers high tunability for studying the topological phase transition.

Structure and lattice excitations of the copper substituted lead oxyapatite Pb 9.06⁢(7)⁢ Cu 0.94⁢(6)⁢ (PO 3.92⁢(4) ) 6 ⁢O 0.96⁢(3)

The copper substituted lead oxyapatite, Pb 10-x⁢ Cu x (PO 3.92⁢(4) ) 6 ⁢O 0.96⁢(3) [x = 0.94(6)] was studied using neutron and x-ray diffraction and neutron spectroscopy techniques. The crystal structure of the main phase of our sample, which has come to be colloquially known as LK-99, is verified to possess a hexagonal structure with space group P6 3 /m, alongside the presence of impurity phases Cu and Cu 2 ⁢S. We determine the primary substitution location of the Cu as the Pb1 (6⁢ℎ) site, with a small substitution at the Pb2 (4⁢f) site. Consequently, no clear Cu-doping-induced structural distortion was observed in the investigated temperature region between 10 K and 300 K. Specially, we did not observe a reduction of coordinate number at the Pb2 site or a clear tilting of PO 4 tetrahedron. Magnetic characterization reveals a diamagnetic signal in the specimen, accompanied by a very weak ferromagnetic component at 2 K. No long-range magnetic order down to 10 K was detected by the neutron diffraction. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements did not show magnetic excitations for energies up to 350 meV. There is no sign of a superconducting resonance in the excitation spectrum of this material. The measured phonon density of states compares well with density functional theory calculations performed for the main LK-99 phase and its impurity phases. Our study may shed some insight into the role of the favored substitution site of copper in the absence of structural distortion and superconductivity in LK-99.

Observation of van der Waals phonons in the single-layer cuprate ( Bi , Pb ) 2 ( Sr , La ) 2 CuO 6 + δ

Interlayer van der Waals (vdW) coupling is generic in two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, which can induce very low-energy phonon modes. Using high-resolution inelastic hard x-ray scattering, we uncover the ultralow energy phonon mode along the Cu-O bond direction in the high- T c cuprate (Bi,Pb) 2 (Sr,La) 2 ⁢CuO 6+$\delta$ (Bi2201). The energy and full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of these modes are independent of temperature, while their intensity decreases with doping in accordance with an increasing c -axis lattice parameter. Here, we compare the experimental results to first-principles density functional theory simulations and identify the observed mode as a van der Waals phonon, which arises from the shear motion of the adjacent Bi-O layers. This shows that Bi-based cuprate has vibrational properties similar to graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, which can be exploited to engineer novel heterostructures.

Enhanced domain dynamics in alternating current poled rhombohedral Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 single crystals

Abstract The understanding of domain dynamics in ferroelectric materials is crucial for optimizing their performance in piezoelectric and electro‐optic applications. Although previous studies have focused on static domain structures and macroscopic characteristics, the time‐resolved approach of domains remains largely unexplored. In this study, we compare the dynamic responses of direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) poled [001]‐oriented rhombohedral Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 (PMN–PT) single crystals using X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) during the application of external electric fields. Our results demonstrate that the AC‐poled sample exhibit enhanced reconfiguration of domain variants in response to driving fields compared to the DC‐poled counterpart, as evidenced by accelerated correlation decay and faster relaxation time. This phenomenon is attributed to enhanced reversible domain wall motion achieved through AC poling, which facilitates field‐induced domain realignment. These findings provide insight into the relationship between dynamics and macroscopic properties in relaxor‐PT single crystals for high‐performance applications.

Electron-impact ionization of the Pb atom

Electron-impact ionization cross sections are calculated for the ground configuration of the Pb atom. Time-dependent close-coupling cross sections for the direct ionization of the 6 s and 6 p subshells leading to single ionization are calculated with and without a polarization potential. Configuration-average distorted-wave cross sections for the direct ionization of the 6 s and 6 p subshells leading to single ionization are also calculated with and without a polarization potential. We find the time-dependent close-coupling cross sections using a polarization potential to be in good agreement with convergent-close-coupling cross sections using a polarization potential. The total direct ionization cross sections are compared to two sets of experimental measurements. The differences between the direct ionization cross sections and the experimental measurements are mainly due to indirect ionization cross sections coming from the 6 s 2 6 p 2 → 6 s 6 p 3 excitation followed by autoionization..

Hole-like Fermi surface in the overdoped non-superconducting Bi 1.8 Pb 0.4 Sr 2 CuO 6+δ

In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, the anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are thought to have a very important role in naturally producing an attractive interaction between the electrons in the d-wave channel. The connection between superconductivity and spin fluctuations is expected to be especially consequential at the overdoped end point of the superconducting dome. In some materials, that point seems to coincide with a Lifshitz transition, where the Fermi surface changes from the hole-like centered at $(\pi, \pi)$ to the electron-like, centered at the Γ point causing a loss of large momentum anti-ferromagnetic fluctuations. In this work, we study the doping dependence of the electronic structure of Bi 1.8 Pb 0.4 Sr 2 CuO$_{6+\delta}$ in angle-resolved photoemission and find that the superconductivity vanishes at lower doping than that at which the Lifshitz transition occurs. This requires a more detailed re-examination of a spin fluctuation scenario.

Revised 207 Pb Thermal Capture Gamma-ray Spectrum Evaluation

This report details the revision of the JENDL-4.0 thermal capture gamma-ray spectrum evaluation for 207 Pb and the comparison of the current evaluations and the revised spectrum. The history of the available reaction evaluations is described and the deficiencies are identified. The modified spectrum has an average energy of 7.329 MeV and an average multiplicity of 1.005, leading to a total energy released value of 7.366 MeV, just 0.03% off from the Q-value of the reaction, 7.368 MeV. Based on comparison to the measurements and structure libraries considered, the revised evaluation is closer to reality and should provide more accurate coupled neutron-gamma ray calculations.

Pb-Apatite Framework as a Generator of Novel Flat-Band CuO-Based Physics

Based upon density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we present the basic electronic structure of CuPb 9 (PO 4 ) 6 O (Cu-doped lead apatite, aka LK-99), in two scenarios: (1) where the structure is constrained to the P3 symmetry and (2) where no symmetry is imposed. At the DFT level, the former is predicted to be metallic while the latter is found to be a charge-transfer insulator. In both cases the filling of these states is nominally d 9 , consistent with the standard Cu 2+ valence state, and Cu with a local magnetic moment of order 0.7 μ B . In the metallic case we find these states to be unusually flat (∼0.2 eV dispersion), giving a very high density of electronic states (DOS) at the Fermi level that we argue can be a host for novel electronic physics. The flatness of the bands is the likely origin of symmetry-lowering gapping possibilities that would remove the spectral weight from E F . Motivated by some initial experimental observations of metallic or semiconducting behavior, we propose that disorder (likely structural) is responsible for closing the gap. Here, we consider a variety of possibilities that could possibly close the charge-transfer gap but limit consideration to kinds of disorder that preserve electron count. Of the possible kinds we considered (spin disorder, O populating vacancy sites, and Cu on less energetically favorable Pb sites), the local Cu moment, and consequently the charge-transfer gap, remains robust. We conclude that disorder responsible for metallic behavior entails some kind of doping where the electron count changes. Further, we claim that the emergence of the flat bands should be due to weak wave function overlap between the orbitals on Cu and O sites, owing to the directional character of the constituent orbitals. Therefore, finding an appropriate host structure for minimizing hybridization between Cu and O while allowing them to still weakly interact should be a promising route for generating flat bands at E F which can lead to interesting electronic phenomena, regardless of whether LK-99 is a superconductor.

Structural Assessment of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, and Hydroxide Substitutions in Lead Arsenate Apatites (Mimetites)–Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 X

Five lead-arsenate apatites (mimetites)-Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 X—where X denotes fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and hydroxide (OH)—were synthesized via precipitation from aqueous solutions. The crystal structures were determined through Rietveld refinement of powder synchrotron X-ray data. All the compounds crystallized in the hexagonal class symmetry (space group P6 3 /m). The Rietveld refinement indicated that mimetite-Cl, -Br, -I, and -OH had an anion deficiency at position X. Substitution of halogens in a mimetite structure brought about systematic changes in unit-cell parameters, interatomic distances, and metaprism twist angles φ, proportional to the substituted halogen’s ionic radius. Mimetite-OH did not follow the linear correlations determined within the series. Twist angle φ, a useful device for monitoring changes in apatite topology, ranged from 20.34° for mimetite-F to 11.42° for mimetite-I. The geometric method has been proposed for determining the diameter of hexagonal channels hosting halogens in apatites. A comparison of the results with halogenated pyromorphites showed similar systematic trends: the substitutions in mimetites have comparable effect on the interatomic distances as in their phosphorous analogues.
