Testing thermal-relic dark matter with a dark-photon mediator

In light of recent DAMIC-M results, we present the status of thermal-relic dark matter χ coupled to a kinetically mixed dark photon A ′ . In the predictive “direct annihilation” regime, m A ′ > m χ , the relic abundance depends on the kinetic mixing parameter, and there is a minimum value compatible with thermal freeze-out. Using only electron- and nuclear-recoil direct-detection results, we find that, for complex scalar dark matter, the direct annihilation regime is now excluded for nearly all values of m χ ; the only exception is the resonant annihilation regime where m A ′ ≈ 2 m χ . Direct annihilation relic targets for other representative models, including Majorana and pseudo-Dirac candidates, remain viable across a wide range of model parameters but will be tested with a combination of dedicated accelerator searches in the near future. In the opposite “secluded annihilation” regime, where m χ > m A ′ , this scenario is excluded by cosmic microwave background measurements for all m χ ≲ 30 GeV . Similar conclusions in both the direct and secluded regimes hold for all anomaly-free vector mediators that couple to the first generation of electrically charged Standard Model particles.

Two-channel multi-impurity Kondo model: RKKY-induced criticality

We show that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasua-Yoisida interaction between overscreened spins in two-channel Kondo impurity systems is a relevant perturbation when the number of impurities N is greater than 3 driving the system to a new quantum critical point with anomalous dimensions $\frac{1}{(𝑁+1)}$ for the spin operator and the Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat scales as 𝛾 ∼ 𝑇 −$\frac{3}{𝑁+1}$ . The critical point universal properties are relevant to many strong correlation problems, such as impurity placed in a Majorana metal and the multichannel Kondo lattice model of heavy fermion materials. In conclusion, we discuss relevance of our results for cluster DMFT studies of quantum criticality.

Spin-strain interactions under hydrostatic pressure in α-RuCl 3

We investigate the effects of hydrostatic pressure on 𝛼−RuCl 3 , a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on a honeycomb lattice with a possible spin-liquid ground state. Using ultrasound measurements at pressures up to 1.16 GPa, we reveal significant modifications of the acoustic properties and the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of this material. Hydrostatic pressure suppresses the three-dimensional magnetic order and induces a dimerization transition at higher pressures. At low pressures, the sound attenuation exhibits a linear temperature dependence, while above 0.28 GPa, it becomes nearly temperature independent, suggesting a shift in the phonon scattering regime dominated by Majorana fermions. These findings provide new insights into spin-strain interactions in Kitaev magnets and deliver a detailed characterization of the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of 𝛼−RuCl 3 under hydrostatic pressure.

Characterization of the First Prototype of the L1K65n Differential-Output Charge-Sensitive Preamplifier ASIC for High-Performance, Low-Background HPGe Detector Readout

Next-generation neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay searches require a large detector/isotope mass and very low radioactive backgrounds. The upcoming LEGEND-1000 experiment (Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless double-beta Decay) constitute a ton-scale array of several hundred high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors enriched in 76Ge, the isotope of interest. It aims to reach a sensitivity beyond 10 28 years on the 0νββ decay half-life of 76Ge, necessitating an order of magnitude reduction in background with respect to the state of the art. This will require the implementation of a dedicated application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) preamplifier that will significantly lower background contribution compared to the conventional low-mass front end (LMFE) employed in the Majorana Demonstrator and LEGEND-200 experiments while maintaining or improving energy resolution and other performance parameters. Features include a high (9 MeV) dynamic range with noise low enough to achieve a trigger threshold of <1 keV, a single power supply to reduce background-inducing cabling, and a differential output to maintain signal integrity over several meters of transmission line. The chip would be optimized to operate in liquid argon (87 K) and be able to do so reliably for ten years. Following on from an earlier 180-nm prototype, we have developed a differential-output charge-sensitive preamplifier ASIC fabricated in a 65-nm process, 1×2 mm in size, that addresses these needs. Here, we present recent results from the successful testing and characterization of the first version of this device.

Zero-energy bound states in the high-temperature superconductors at the two-dimensional limit

Majorana zero modes (MZMs) that obey the non-Abelian statistics have been intensively investigated for potential applications in topological quantum computing. The prevailing signals in tunneling experiments “fingerprinting” the existence of MZMs are the zero-energy bound states (ZEBSs). However, nearly all of the previously reported ZEBSs showing signatures of the MZMs are observed in difficult-to-fabricate heterostructures at very low temperatures and additionally require applied magnetic field. Here, by using in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we detect the ZEBSs upon the interstitial Fe adatoms deposited on two different high-temperature superconducting one-unit-cell iron chalcogenides on SrTiO 3 (001). The spectroscopic results resemble the phenomenological characteristics of the MZMs inside the vortex cores of topological superconductors. Our experimental findings may extend the MZM explorations in connate topological superconductors toward an applicable temperature regime and down to the two-dimensional (2D) limit.

Observation of edge supercurrent in topological antiferromagnet MnBi 2 Te 4 -based Josephson junctions

Hybridizing superconductivity with topology and magnetism attracts growing interest in condensed matter physics. Here, we present our findings on the measurement of supercurrent induced in an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 . By constructing a MnBi 2 Te 4 proximity Josephson junction, we observed an anomalously large period of the Fraunhofer patterns, indicating a strong Josephson coupling state. As the MnBi 2 Te 4 thickness is reduced, a distinct asymmetric edge supercurrent emerges, aligning consistently with the observed oscillatory junction magnetoresistance. Leveraging this large asymmetric edge supercurrent, we have realized a nonvolatile Josephson diode device with programmable polarity, achieved through training with an out-of-plane magnetic field. Theoretical calculations substantiate that these behaviors are attributed to the interference between the highly asymmetric topological edge channel–mediated supercurrent induced in MnBi 2 Te 4 . Our study establishes this system as a promising avenue for investigating topological superconductivity, chiral Majorana edge modes, and advanced functionality device applications.

Nearly quantized conductance plateau of vortex zero mode in an iron-based superconductor

Majorana zero modes (MZMs) are spatially-localized zero-energy fractional quasiparticles with non-Abelian braiding statistics that hold promise for topological quantum computing. Owing to the particle-antiparticle equivalence, MZMs reflect quantized conductance at low temperature. By utilizing variable-tunnel-coupled scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we study tunneling conductance of vortex bound states on FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 superconductors. Here, we report observations of conductance plateaus as a function of tunnel coupling for zero-energy vortex bound states with values close to or even reaching the 2 e 2 / h quantum conductance (here e is the electron charge and h is Planck’s constant). In contrast, no plateaus were observed on either finite energy vortex bound states or in the continuum of electronic states outside the superconducting gap. This behavior of the zero-mode conductance confirms the existence of MZMs in FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 .

Interface-induced superconductivity in magnetic topological insulators

The interface between two different materials can show unexpected quantum phenomena. Here, in this study, we used molecular beam epitaxy to synthesize heterostructures formed by stacking together two magnetic materials, a ferromagnetic topological insulator (TI) and an antiferromagnetic iron chalcogenide (FeTe). We observed emergent interface-induced superconductivity in these heterostructures and demonstrated the co-occurrence of superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and topological band structure in the magnetic TI layer—the three essential ingredients of chiral topological superconductivity (TSC). The unusual coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity is accompanied by a high upper critical magnetic field that exceeds the Pauli paramagnetic limit for conventional superconductors at low temperatures. These magnetic TI/FeTe heterostructures with robust superconductivity and atomically sharp interfaces provide an ideal wafer-scale platform for the exploration of chiral TSC and Majorana physics.

Constraints on lepton number violation with the 2 tonne · year CUORE dataset

Matter-antimatter asymmetry underlines the incompleteness of the current understanding of particle physics. Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) may help explain this asymmetry while unveiling the Majorana nature of the neutrino. The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment searches for 0νββ of 130 Te using a tonne-scale cryogenic calorimeter operated at milli-kelvin temperatures. We report no evidence of 0νββ and place a lower limit on the half-life of T 1/2 > 3.5 × 10 25 years (90% credibility interval) with over 2 tonne·years of TeO 2 exposure. Finally, the tools and techniques developed for this result and the 5-year stable operation of nearly 1000 detectors demonstrate crucial infrastructure for future-generation experiments capable of searching for 0νββ across multiple isotopes.

GeV-scale neutrinos: interactions with mesons and DUNE sensitivity

The simplest extension of the SM to account for the observed neutrino masses and mixings is the addition of at least two singlet fermions (or right-handed neutrinos). If their masses lie at or below the GeV scale, such new fermions would be produced in meson decays. Similarly, provided they are sufficiently heavy, their decay channels may involve mesons in the final state. Although the couplings between mesons and heavy neutrinos have been computed previously, significant discrepancies can be found in the literature. The aim of this paper is to clarify such discrepancies and provide consistent expressions for all relevant effective operators involving mesons with masses up to 2 GeV. Moreover, the effective Lagrangians obtained for both the Dirac and Majorana scenarios are made publicly available as FeynRules models so that fully differential event distributions can be easily simulated. As an application of our setup, we numerically compute the expected sensitivity of the DUNE near detector to these heavy neutral leptons.

Sterile neutrinos, black hole vacuum and holographic principle

We construct an effective field theory (EFT) model that describes matter field interactions with Schwarzschild mini-black-holes (SBH’s), treated as a scalar field, B 0 (x). Fermion interactions with SBH’s require a complex spurion field, θ ij , which we interpret as the EFT description of “holographic information,” which is correlated with the SBH as a composite system. We consider Hawking’s virtual black hole vacuum (VBH) as a Higgs phase, $\langle$B 0 $\rangle$=V. Integrating sterile neutrino loops, the information field θij is promoted to a dynamical field, necessarily developing a tachyonic instability and acquiring a VEV of order the Planck scale. For N sterile neutrinos this breaks the vacuum to SU(N) × U(1)/SO(N) with N degenerate Majorana masses, and 12N(N+1) Nambu-Goldstone neutrino-Majorons. The model suggests many scalars fields, corresponding to all fermion bilinears, may exist bound nonperturbatively by gravity.

Optimization of the first CUPID detector module

CUPID will be a next generation experiment searching for the neutrinoless double β decay, whose discovery would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Based on the experience achieved with the CUORE experiment, presently taking data at LNGS, CUPID aims to reach a background free environment by means of scintillating Li 2 100 MoO 4 crystals coupled to light detectors. Indeed, the simultaneous heat and light detection allows us to reject the dominant background of α particles, as proven by the CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo demonstrators. In this work we present the results of the first test of the CUPID baseline module. In particular, we propose a new optimized detector structure and light sensors design to enhance the engineering and the light collection, respectively. We characterized the heat detectors, achieving an energy resolution of (5.9 ± 0.2) keV FWHM at the Q-value of 100 Mo (about 3034 keV). We studied the light collection of the baseline CUPID design with respect to an alternative configuration which features gravity-assisted light detectors’ mounting. In both cases we obtained an improvement in the light collection with respect to past measures and we validated the particle identification capability of the detector, which ensures an α particle rejection higher than 99.9%, fully satisfying the requirements for CUPID.

CUPID, the Cuore upgrade with particle identification

CUPID, the CUORE Upgrade with Particle Identification, is a next-generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0 νββ ) and other rare events using enriched Li 2 100 MoO 4 scintillating bolometers. It will be hosted by the CUORE cryostat located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The main physics goal of CUPID is to search for 0 νββ of 100 Mo with a discovery sensitivity covering the full neutrino mass regime in the inverted ordering scenario, as well as the portion of the normal ordering regime with lightest neutrino mass larger than 10 meV. With a conservative background index of 10 −4 cts/(keV·kg·yr), 240 kg isotope mass, 5 keV FWHM energy resolution at 3 MeV and 10 live-years of data taking, CUPID will have a 90% C.L. half-life exclusion sensitivity of 1.8 · 10 27 yr, corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass ( m ββ ) sensitivity of 9–15 meV, and a 3σ discovery sensitivity of 1 · 10 27 yr, corresponding to an m ββ range of 12–21 meV.

Search for heavy neutral leptons in decays of W bosons produced in 13 TeV pp collisions using prompt signatures in the ATLAS detector

The existence of right-handed neutrinos with Majorana masses below the electroweak scale could help address the origins of neutrino masses, the matter–antimatter asymmetry, and dark matter. In this paper, leptonic decays of W bosons from 140 fb-1$$^{-1}$$ of 13 TeV proton–proton collisions at the LHC, reconstructed in the ATLAS experiment, are used to search for heavy neutral leptons produced through their mixing with muon or electron neutrinos in a scenario with lepton number violation. The search is conducted using prompt leptonic decay signatures. The considered final states require two same-charge leptons or three leptons, while vetoing three-lepton same-flavour topologies. No significant excess over the expected Standard Model backgrounds is found, leading to constraints on the heavy neutral lepton’s mixing with muon and electron neutrinos for heavy-neutral-lepton masses. The analysis excludes |Ue|2$$|U_{e}|^2$$ values above 8×10-5$$8\times 10^{-5}$$ and |Uμ|2$$|U_{\mu }|^2$$ values above 5.0×10-5$$5.0 \times 10^{-5}$$ in the full mass range of 8–65 GeV. The strongest constraints are placed on heavy-neutral-lepton masses in the range 15–30 GeV of |Ue|2<1.1×10-5$$|U_{e}|^2 < 1.1 \times 10^{-5}$$ and |Uμ|2<5×10-6$$|U_{\mu }|^2 < 5 \times 10^{-6}$$.

Sensitivity of the CUPID experiment to $0\nu \beta \beta$ decay of 100 Mo

CUPID is a next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu \beta \beta$ ) of 100 Mo using Li 2 MoO 4 scintillating crystals. It will operate 1596 crystals at ~10 mK in the CUORE cryostat at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Each crystal will be facing two Ge-based bolometric light detectors for α rejection. We compute the discovery and the exclusion sensitivity of CUPID to $0\nu \beta \beta$ in a Frequentist and a Bayesian framework. This computation is done numerically based on pseudo-experiments. For the CUPID baseline scenario, with a background and an energy resolution of 1.0 x 10 –4 counts/keV/kg/yr and 5 keV FWHM at the Q-value, respectively, this results in a Bayesian exclusion sensitivity (90% c.i.) of $\hat{T}_{1/2} > 1.6 \times 10^{27} \ \textrm{yr}$, corresponding to the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\hat{m}_{\beta \beta } < \ 9.6$ – 28 meV. The Frequentist discovery sensitivity (3σ ) is $\hat{T}_{1/2}= 1.0 \times 10^{27} \ \textrm{yr}$, corresponding to $\hat{m}_{\beta \beta }= \ 12$ – 36 meV.

Probing neutrino mass models through resonances at neutrino telescopes

We study the detection prospects of relatively light charged scalars in radiative Majorana neutrino mass models, such as the Zee model and its variants using scalar leptoquarks, at current and future neutrino telescopes. In particular, we show that these scalar mediators can give rise to Glashow-like resonance features in the ultrahigh energy (UHE) neutrino event spectrum at the IceCube neutrino observatory and its high-energy upgrade IceCube-Gen2. The same scalars can also give rise to observable nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSIs), and we show that the UHE neutrinos provide a complementary probe of NSI. We also discuss an interesting possibility of producing such resonances by incoming sterile neutrino components in the case where neutrinos are pseudo-Dirac particles.

Status and prospects of discovery of 0νββ decay with the CUORE detector

In this contribution we present the achievements of the CUORE experiment so far. It is the first tonne-scale bolometric detector and it is in stable data taking since 2018. We reached to collect about 1800 kg×yr of exposure of which more than 1 ton×year have been analysed. The CUORE detector is meant to search for the neutrinoless double β decay (0νββ) of the 130 Te isotope. This is a beyond Standard Model process which could establish the nature of the neutrino to be Dirac or a Majorana particle. It is an alternative mode of the two-neutrinos double β decay, a rare decay which have been precisely measured by CUORE in the 130 Te. We found no evidence of the 0νββ and we set a Bayesian lower limit of 2.2 ×10 25 yr on its half-life. The expertise achieved by CUORE set a milestone for any future bolometric detector, including CUPID, which is the planned next generation experiment searching for 0νββ with scintillating bolometers.

Network construction of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids

We use a network of chiral junctions to construct a family of topological chiral spin liquids in two spatial dimensions. The chiral spin liquid phase harbors SU(2) _k k anyons, which stem from the underlying SU(2) _k k WZW models that describe the constituent spin chains of the network. The network exhibits quantized spin and thermal Hall conductances. We illustrate our construction by inspecting the topological properties of the SU(2) _2 2 model. We find that this model has emergent Ising anyons, with spinons acting as vortex excitations that bind Majorana zero modes. We also show that the ground state of this network is threefold degenerate on the torus, asserting its non-Abelian character. Our results shed new light on the stability of non-Abelian topological phases in artificial quantum materials.
