Novel geometries for air-cooled condensation of ammonia-water mixtures

An analytical and experimental investigation of air-cooled condensers for small-scale ammonia-water absorption heat pumps is presented. Conventional round-tube corrugated fin design and a novel multi-pass tube array design are considered for a condenser operating at severe ambient conditions within a compact footprint. Segmental heat and mass transfer models are developed to gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics of each design. Predicted heat duties are within 5% of the measured values. The limitations of correlations to predict air-side pressure drop in corrugated fins are identified. The performance of the novel multi-pass tube array condenser was comparable to that of conventional condensers, but is determined to be air-side limited throughout length of the heat exchanger. An improved multi-pass condenser design with fins for increased air-side area is proposed using the insights gained from the modeling and experiments. In closing this design meets the heat duty requirements at severe ambient conditions, while decreasing the size of the heat exchanger by 33%.

Ionic liquid-water mixtures enhance pretreatment and anaerobic digestion of agave bagasse

Agave bagasse (AB), a byproduct of tequila production, is a waste generated in large quantities and an emerging alternative for biofuels production. Nevertheless, the use of lignocellulosic biomass for this purpose requires a pretreatment that maximizes its degradation and utilization. Although there are several pretreatment types, using ionic liquids (IL) has become attractive due to its ability to dissolve the lignocellulosic biomass under mild conditions of time and temperature. As a drawback are the high cost of IL's and their high viscosity; thus mixing them with water is a way to overcome these hindrances. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of pretreatment with three diluted ILs on the A. tequilana bagasse structure and sugars production, as well as the potential of the enzymatic hydrolysate to produce methane in batch mode. The evaluated ILs were: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [Emim][OAc], choline lysinate [Ch][Lys] and ethanolamine acetate [EOA][OAc]. The results showed that the IL with the best performance was [Ch][Lys], which not only offered the highest yields of sugar production (0.57 ± 0.03 g total sugars / g bagasse) but also, it is possible to use it at 30 % in a mix with water obtaining similar yields as with pure IL. Enzymatic hydrolysis of IL pretreated AB achieved 50.7 kg sugars and 49.3 kg of sugars for 90 %-[Ch][Lys] and 30 %-[Ch][Lys], respectively per 100 kg of untreated biomass. The enzymatic hydrolysate from the 30 %-[Ch][Lys] pretreated AB was able to achieve 0.28 L CH4/g CODfed, demonstrating that both sugar and methane yields are maintained when pure or 30 %-[Ch][Lys] are used for pretreatment, representing a step forward towards process feasibility.

Protonation Dynamics of Confined Ethanol–Water Mixtures in H-ZSM-5 from Machine Learning-Driven Metadynamics

Zeolites are indispensable heterogeneous catalysts in industrial chemical processes, valued for their strong Brønsted acidity, well-defined microporous frameworks, and tunable pore structures. Their catalytic activity arises primarily from Brønsted acid sites (BAS), typically present as bridging hydroxyl groups (Si–OH–Al). Under aqueous reaction conditions, these protons interact dynamically with water and alcohol molecules, leading to complex solvation and protonation behavior within confined pores. In this study, we investigate the protonation equilibrium occurring between ethanol and water at the BAS of acidic zeolites under varying hydration levels, i.e., C2H5OH–(H2O)n, n=1–4. Local structure was analyzed through an adaptive-learning global optimization algorithm, while enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations with Well-Tempered Metadynamics (WMetaD) and machine learning interatomic potentials (MLPs) provide free-energy surfaces (FES) at variable hydration levels. The results reveal a strong dependence of proton localization on the degree of hydration. At low hydration (1 water molecule), the proton resides predominantly on ethanol; with 2 water molecules, it shifts toward water, and at higher hydration (3 or more water molecules), it becomes extensively delocalized over the water cluster. These findings underscore the critical role of solvation in modulating acid site behavior and suggest that a minimum of three water molecules is necessary to fully stabilize the proton on water within the zeolite framework. This solvation threshold has significant implications for catalytic processes, particularly in biomass conversion reactions where alcohol protonation is a key step in dehydration mechanisms.

Role of side-chain length on gas transport of CO 2 /CH 4 mixtures in polymers with side-chain porosity

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are traditionally formed from ladder backbones, but recent synthetic advances have allowed for the formation of non-traditional PIMs using a poly(ladder) motif, whereby rigid PIM-like sidechains are appended onto more flexible backbones. The effect of side-chain length on free volume and gas transport properties was recently evaluated for a methoxy-functionalized poly(ladder) (OMe-ROMP). In this study, we elaborate on the role of side-chain length and its influence on mixed-gas performance and plasticization stability for OMe-ROMP. Pure-gas sorption results are also reported, including hysteresis effects from CO 2 conditioning. Taken together, this study reveals the role of side-chain length on gas sorption, diffusion, and plasticization for CO 2 /CH 4 separations. Finally, we conclude that the length of a rigid side chain in the poly(ladder) motif is a valuable structural parameter to control sorption, diffusion, and stability towards plasticization for gas separation membrane materials.

Solvation dynamics of choline fluoride in ethylene glycol – Water mixtures

Due to their favorable physical properties, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been of interest in many applications in the energy and industry sectors. In this study, we investigate the new deep eutectic solvent ethalineF (a 1:2 M ratio of choline fluoride:ethylene glycol) and the effect of water addition on the solvation dynamics compared to the better known ethaline (a 1:2 M ratio of choline chloride:ethylene glycol). Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and NMR diffusometry were used to study the solvation dynamics. 19 F NMR spectra were obtained for ethalineF solutions with different water additions. The 19 F NMR spectra show two fluorine signals; one can be assigned to fluoride anions solvated by EG and the other signal to fluoride anions associated with the much heavier and less mobile choline cation. Density, viscosity, conductivity, and E T (30) polarity measurements are also provided for ethalineF. The nuclear spin nature of fluorine atom permits to measure the self-diffusion coefficient of the negative ion in addition of the cation diffusion in a choline halide based deep eutectic solvent system. This allows to calculate the NMR-predicted conductivities σ NMR . The obtained ion dissociation coefficients α D at different water concentrations suggest a partial ion dissociation which was commensurate with the relatively low ion conductivity. Furthermore, the observed modest conductivity of ethalineF is explained in terms of ion association as well as the gradual increase in conductivity caused by the addition of water.
