It begins - digitizing the Rocky Flats Collection

From 1952 to 1989, the Rocky Flats Plant near Golden, Colorado, manufactured plutonium cores - the nuclear weapon pits that still exist in the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile. Not only did Rocky Flats personnel produce these plutonium cores, they also documented every facet of this highly technical process. Moreover, Rocky Flats was a premier center for actinide research and development, with these data as relevant today as they were yesterday

Harold Agnew’s son gives Lab never-before-seen photos, documents

When I arrived at Los Alamos in 2003, the Laboratory’s long-retired third director was still a very popular figure. He was so popular, in fact, that he enjoyed an honor typically reserved for only the most adored and outrageous pop stars and Brazilian footballers: He was known by one name. Back then, most Lab staff knew exactly who you were talking about when you referred to “Harold.” Harold Agnew was at the helm from 1970 – 1979, though his career here began when he was still just in his 20s. He was recruited to work on the U.S. government’s top-secret project to build the first atomic bombs and help bring a swift end to World War II. Harold died in 2013 at 92, but March 28 would have been his 100th birthday. Although he’s no longer here to celebrate with us, we can gain inspiration by remembering his remarkable life of service – and mischief. Both are now well-documented in the collections of the National Security Research Center (NSRC), the Lab’s classified library, which also includes unclassified pieces of our history. The NSRC’s newest addition to its collections comes from Harold’s son John Agnew, who just recently gave me a box of about 250 images and about 15 documents that belonged to his dad. The contents are nothing short of remarkable, one-of-a-kind, and in some cases, hilarious. As the NSRC staff are accessioning these pieces into the Lab’s collections, looking through these materials is a chance for me to remember our former director and my friend.

Classified Library Completes Large Digitization Project of Patent Collection

Many of us regularly enjoy the online resources provided by the National Security Research Center (NSRC), which is the Lab’s classified library. However, you may not be aware of all the work that goes on behind the scenes to digitize articles, reports, photographs, and correspondence. This process not only preserves documents, many of which date back to the Manhattan Project era, but also ensures they are searchable and accessible for today’s national security work. You also may not be aware that a vast majority of the Laboratory’s information holdings have not yet been digitized. And by vast majority, I mean perhaps 90% of the millions of holdings in the NSRC is only available in hard copy.

Blue Room timeline update

The following files are an update to the unclassified timeline in the Blue Room (the classified Weapons museum on the sixth floor of the NSSB). The current timeline ends at 2011; these files will bring the timeline up to the present. The previous timeline also failed to show that the USSR became Russia in 1991, so these files update that major world event. The timeline will be viewed by VIP visitors to the Laboratory

Status Report on the Molten Salt Thermodynamic Database (MSTDB) Development (FY20)

The current status of the Molten Salt Thermodynamic Database (MSTDB) is reported. While a series of informational exchange meetings with Moten Salt Reactor (MSR) developers has given the NEAMS program insight into the systems of interest, the current effort is devoted to mining data already available in the literature for continued development of MSTDB. Many relevant systems have not been previously studied. Therefore, once the data from the literature is completely reviewed, curated, and used as inputs for MSTDB, new thermodynamic values will need to be generated using computational and experimental approaches.

2021-2026 Weapons Research Services Strategic Plan

The Weapons Research Services (WRS) Division provides Los Alamos National Laboratory with services, resources, and staff that are critical to fulfilling its national security mission. WRS serves the entire LANL Weapons Program and is housed within the Weapons Physics Directorate (ALDX), which is at the core of the design, certification, and assessment of the nation’s nuclear weapons. More specifically, WRS is a research and development organization that provides unique tools designed to meet the specific needs of the Lab’s weapons mission rather than administrative or Information & Technology (IT) tools used broadly by the Lab. WRS partners with other LANL organizations, including Global Security to conduct mission research and I&T organizations to meet basic IT infrastructure needs.

MCC On Boarding Section J-2 (Exhibit H) Quality Assurance Requirements [Slides]

Upon MATOC Award, SUBCONTRACTOR shall submit a Quality Assurance Program for evaluation in accordance with subcontract technical and quality requirements. This may be the Subcontractors corporate QA program. Acceptance by Triad of the SUBCONTRACTORS Quality Assurance Program (QAP), as prescribed in Exhibit H, QC-01A and 01B, allows the SUBCONTRACTOR to execute this contract using their approved QAP. SUBCONTRACTORS QAP as approved by CONTRACTOR must meet the applicable requirements of DOE Order 414.1D (see next slide) and must address flow down of the quality requirements to lower tier subcontractors. Triad acceptance of SUBCONTRACTOR’s QAP approval is required prior to Notice to Proceed with on-site work. A Project Specific QA plan may on rare occasions be required for a specific task
