Enhanced Component Performance Study: Emergency Diesel Generators 1998-2020

This report presents an enhanced performance evaluation of emergency power system (EPS) and high-pressure core spray (HPCS) emergency diesel generators (EDGs) at U.S. commercial nuclear power plants. This report evaluates component performance over time using (1) Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) Industry Reporting and Information System (IRIS) data from 1998 through 2020 and (2) maintenance unavailability performance data from Mitigating Systems Performance Index (MSPI) Basis Document data from 2002 through 2020. The objective is to show estimates of current failure probabilities and rates related to EDGs, trend these data on an annual basis, determine if the current data are consistent with the probability distributions currently recommended for use in NRC probabilistic risk assessments, show how the reliability data differ for different EDG manufacturers and for EDGs with different ratings; and summarize the subcomponents, causes, detection methods, and recovery associated with each EDG failure mode. The EDG failure modes considered are fail to start (FTS), fail to load and run (FTLR), and fail to run after one hour of operation (FTR>1H). Engineering analyses were performed with respect to time period and failure mode without regard to the actual number of EDGs at each plant. The factors analyzed are: subcomponent, failure cause, detection method, recovery, manufacturer, and EDG rating. The following increasing trends were identified for EDGs for the most recent 10-year period: • HPCS EDG FTS failure probability • EPS and HPCS EDG frequency of start demands (demands per reactor year) • EPS and HPCS EDG frequency of FTLR demands. The following decreasing trends were identified for EDGs for the most recent 10-year period: • EPS EDG FTS failure probability • EPS EDG FTLR failure probability • EPS EDG unavailability • EPS and HPCS EDG frequency of FTLR events (failures per reactor year).

Integrated Research Infrastructure Architecture Blueprint Activity (Final Report 2023)

The complexity of scientific pursuits is increasing rapidly with aspects that require dynamic integration of experiment, observation, theory, modeling, simulation, visualization, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and analysis. Research projects across the Department of Energy (DOE) are increasingly data and compute intensive. Innovative research teams are accelerating the pace of discovery by using high-performance computational and data tools in their research workflows and leveraging multiple research infrastructures. Additionally, several recent high-level U.S. government reports underscore the necessity of a new advanced computing ecosystem for international competitiveness and national security. International competitors are moving forward with major research infrastructure integration efforts that seek to capture a competitive advantage in the global innovation race. Owing to its unparalleled constellation of world-class experimental and observational facilities and high-performance and extreme-scale computational, data, and networking infrastructure, DOE is positioned to be a global leader in this new era of integrated science. However, this new integration paradigm will demand continuing evolution to ensure the U.S. remains a global leader in research and innovation. The DOE Office of Science (SC) has seized on the strategic importance of integration and has adopted a vision for Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI): To empower researchers to meld DOE’s world-class research tools, infrastructure, and user facilities seamlessly and securely in novel ways to radically accelerate discovery and innovation. To respond to the evolving computational requirements of research and the competitive international innovation landscape, experimental facilities could be connected with high performance computing resources for near real-time analysis, and resources should be provided for merging enormous and diverse data for AI/ML techniques and analysis.

A mindset of safety and success

Iris Molina's role as a leader at Los Alamos National Laboratory requires an array of technical skills that are crucial to the Lab's plutonium pit mission; skills she has honed over her long career at the Lab. Her real focus, however, is on her team. Molina’s team is responsible for three different functional areas in pit production, including welding components, putting those welded parts together and conducting nondestructive testing. While she oversees those tasks, Molina wants employees across the Lab to know how exceptional her employees are.

Development of a Half-Meter Scale Traveling-Wave (TW) SRF Cavity

While a demonstration of TW resonance excitation in the 3-cell structure in 2K liquid helium had been prepared and carried out at Fermilab in collaboration with Euclid Techlabs, the RF design process of 0.5~1 meter scale TW cavity was begun at Fermilab as the next step of TW development towards an accelerator-scale one. Considering the physical dimensions of existing SRF facilities (for fabrication, processing, and cryogenic testing), Fermilab has proposed a half-meter scale TW RF design consisting of a 7-cell structure and a power feedback waveguide (WG) loop. The WG loop design includes the new RF configurations for TW resonance control during a high-power operation. 1-year US-Japan collaboration program focused on EBW optimization for the TW shape iris joint within the narrow gap was awarded and the efforts has been made by Fermilab, Jlab, and KEK. 1-year LDRD program of Fermilab is awarded recently to fabricate a low-cost mockup of the WG loop with new RF configurations and validate them. Here we will present a preliminary 7-cell TW RF design and will report the progress and challenges through the programs awarded.

Latest Development to Establish the World Reference with Traceability to SI Units for Measuring the Atmospheric Shortwave and Longwave Irradiance

To date, Interim world reference traceable to blackbody (not sky/atmosphere) is used as a reference noted as a World Infrared Standard Group (WISG). Plan forward: to develop a reference standards traceable to SI InfraRed Integrating Sphere (IRIS) Developed by the World Radiation Center (PMOD) is traceable to blackbody irradiance. Absolute Cavity Pyrgeometer (ACP) developed by NLR is a self-calibrating radiometer using heat substitution to measure the atmospheric longwave irradiance. ACP is a contribution to develop the world reference with traceability to SI, using the outdoor irradiance as the source, instead of blackbody.
