Iminoguanidines: from anion recognition and separation to carbon capture

Iminoguanidines, first reported in 1898, have received renewed attention in the last 5 years due to their ability to recognize and separate anions from competitive aqueous environments. Iminoguanidines display high recognition abilities towards hydrophilic oxyanions (e.g., sulfate, chromate, carbonate) through strong and complementary hydrogen bonding from the guanidinium groups. Here, this feature article reviews the fundamental anion recognition chemistry of iminoguanidines, as well as real-world applications including sulfate removal from seawater and CO 2 capture for climate change mitigations.

Here aqueous solubilization of hydrophobic tetrapyrrole macrocycles by attachment to an amphiphilic single-chain nanoparticle (SCNP)

Solubilization of hydrophobic tetrapyrrole macrocycles and other fluorophores in aqueous solution has been achieved by covalent attachment to the terminus of an amphiphilic polymer, thereby affording a single-fluorophore–single-chain nanoparticle (SCNP). The polymer is a heterotelechelic random polyacrylate/polyacrylamide copolymer bearing hydrophobic and hydrophilic pendant groups. The polymer has a folded unimeric morphology (~13 nm hydrodynamic diameter) in 1 M NaCl aqueous solution as indicated by dynamic light-scattering spectroscopy. Five hydrophobic organic fluorophores (coumarin, perylene, two chlorins, one phthalocyanine) have been synthesized with a conjugatable tether. Covalent conjugation of the fluorophore–maleimide to the polymer terminus via thiol–maleimide reaction was carried out in DMF. The resulting fluorophore–SCNP in 1 M NaCl aqueous solution exhibited retained spectral features and fluorescence quantum yield comparable to those of the respective hydrophobic benchmark in toluene. This single-fluorophore–single-polymer strategy simplifies the challenging and often idiosyncratic syntheses of water-soluble tetrapyrrole macrocycles by using the polymer as a general aqueous solubilization package, and in so doing opens up opportunities for the application of hydrophobic fluorophores in the life sciences.

Tunable electrochromic behavior of titanium-based MXenes

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides, popular by the name MXenes, are a promising class of materials as they exhibit intriguing optical, optoelectronic and electrochemical properties. Taking advantage of their metallic conductivity and hydrophilicity, titanium carbide MXenes (Ti 3 C 2 T x and others) are used to fabricate solution processable transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) for the design of three-electrode electrochromic cells. However, the tunable electrochromic behavior of various titanium-based MXene compositions across the entire visible spectrum has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we investigate the intrinsic electrochromic properties of titanium-based MXenes, Ti 3 C 2 T x , Ti 3 CNT x , Ti 2 CT x , and Ti 1.6 Nb 0.4 CT x , where individual MXenes serve as a transparent conducting, electrochromic, and plasmonic material layer. Plasmonic extinction bands for Ti 3 C 2 T x , Ti 2 CT x and Ti 1.6 Nb 0.4 CT x are centered at 800, 550 and 480 nm, which are electrochemically tunable to 630, 470 and 410 nm, respectively, whereas Ti 3 CNT x shows a reversible change in transmittance in the wide visible range. Additionally, the switching rates of MXene electrodes with no additional transparent conductor electrodes are estimated and correlated with the respective electrical figure of merit values. This work demonstrates that MXene-based electrochromic cells are tunable in the entire visible spectrum and suggests the potential of the MXene family of materials in optoelectronic, plasmonic, and photonic applications, such as tunable visible optical filters and modulators, to name a few.

Poly(norbornene) anion conductive membranes: homopolymer, block copolymer and random copolymer properties and performance

It has previously been shown that phase-separated block copolymers with non-ion conducting (hydrophobic) blocks and ion conducting (hydrophilic) blocks can form efficient ion conducting channels with high ionic mobility and conductivity. Block copolymers can provide a means for phase segregation and ion channel formation while homopolymers and random copolymers have been shown to have lower ion mobility. In this study, the properties of poly(norbornene) based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) comprising homopolymers, block copolymers, and random copolymers with high ion-exchange capacity (IEC) (3.48–4.55 meq. g -1 ) have been investigated and compared. The polymers were cross-linked with N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine before casting the membranes to avoid excessive water swelling due to high water uptake. It was shown that high ionic conductivity can be achieved in both random copolymers and homopolymers even in the absence of microphase-separated structures. For example, the conductivity of a random copolymer was 194 mS cm -1 at 80 °C, which was comparable to the block copolymer, 201 mS cm -1 at 80 °C. The H 2 /O 2 fuel cell performance of random copolymer composite membranes showed a peak power density of 3.05 W cm -2 and peak current density of 7.85 A cm -2 at 80 °C compared to block copolymer membranes (peak power density of 3.21 W cm -2 and peak current density of 8.27 A cm -2 at 80 °C). It is more critical that high water transport be achieved in AEMs than achieving a phase-segregated morphology. Finally, the homopolymer, block copolymer, and random copolymer membranes showed <1.35% degradation after aging in 1 M NaOH at 80 °C for 1000 h.

Potential-induced wetting and dewetting in pH-responsive block copolymer membranes for mass transport control

Wetting and dewetting behavior in channel-confined hydrophobic volumes is used in biological membranes to effect selective ion/molecular transport. Artificial biomimetic hydrophobic nanopores have been devised utilizing wetting and dewetting, however, tunable mass transport control utilizing multiple transport modes is required for applications such as controllable release/transport, water separation/purification and energy conversion. Here, we investigate the potential-induced wetting and dewetting behavior in a pH-responsive membrane composed of a polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) block copolymer (BCP) when fabricated as a hierarchically-organized sandwich structure on a nanopore electrode array (NEA), i.e. BCP@NEA. At pH < pK a (P4VP) (pK a ~ 4.8), the BCP acts as an anion-exchange membrane due to the hydrophilic, protonated P4VP cylindrical nanodomains, but at pH > pK a (P4VP), the P4VP domains exhibit charge-neutral, hydrophobic and collapsed structures, blocking mass transport via the hydrophobic membrane. However, when originally prepared in a dewetted condition, mass transport in the BCP membrane may be switched on if sufficiently negative potentials are applied to the BCP@NEA architecture. When the hydrophobic BCP membrane is introduced on top of 2-electrode-embedded nanopore arrays, electrolyte solution in the nanopores is introduced, then isolated, by exploiting the potential-induced wetting and dewetting transitions in the BCP membrane. The potential-induced wetting/dewetting transition and the effect on cyclic voltammetry in the BCP@NEA structures is characterized as a function of the potential, pH and ionic strength. Additionally chronoamperometry and redox cycling experiments are used to further characterize the potential response. The multi-modal mass transport system proposed in this work will be useful for ultrasensitive sensing and single-molecule studies, which require long-time monitoring to explore reaction dynamics as well as molecular heterogeneity in nanoconfined volumes.

Elucidating the mechanisms of enhanced lignin bioconversion by an alkali sterilization strategy

Biological lignin valorization represents an emerging green approach to upgrade lignin for sustainable and economic biorefineries. However, lignin generally exhibits poor water solubility and inhomogeneous distribution in an aqueous medium, significantly limiting its bioconversion efficiency. Herein, we develop a novel alkali sterilization strategy to effectively enhance the dispersion and fermentation performance of lignin substrates. The colloidal particle size and molecular structure variations of lignin during the sterilization were thoroughly investigated to reveal the mechanisms of enhanced fermentation performance. Results showed that alkali sterilization achieved a completely aseptic effect when mixing lignin medium at an initial pH of 12.7 for 24 h. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis demonstrated that the hydrodynamic volume of colloidal lignin particles decreased by 96.3% by alkali sterilization compared with the conventional thermal sterilization. Moreover, lignin characterizations by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) suggested that alkali sterilization modified the lignin molecular structure by generating 50% more hydrophilic carboxyl groups, reducing the weight-average molecular weight (M w ) by 23.0%, and narrowing the molar-mass dispersity (D M ) by 23.8%. The generation of lignin substrates with more uniform distribution and lower molecular weight improved Rhodococcus opacus PD630 cell growth and metabolism. Microbial cell amount, lignin degradation, and lipid production in alkali sterilized medium increased by 309%, 30.3%, and 48.3%, respectively, compared to those in thermally sterilized medium. These results clearly demonstrated that alkali sterilization dramatically improved the lignin bioconversion performance. Furthermore, this work presents a facile and effective sterilization strategy to overcome inhomogeneous lignin distribution in aqueous fermentation media, showing great potentials as a platform technique for promoting biological lignin valorization.

Revealing the effect of interfacial electron transfer in heterostructured Co 9 S 8 @NiFe LDH for enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Heterointerface engineering is a desirable way to rationally design efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, urchin-like Co 9 S 8 @NiFe layered double hydroxide (Co 9 S 8 @NiFe LDH) heterostructured hollow spheres are assembled from Co 9 S 8 hollow spheres as the core and porous NiFe LDH nanowires as the shell. The heterostructured hollow spheres show a small overpotential of 220 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , a low Tafel slope of 52.0 mV dec -1 , and robust stability, which is better than that of commercial IrO 2 and most reported non-precious electrocatalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the synergetic effect at the interface could improve the electrical conductivity of Co 9 S 8 @NiFe LDH, induce electron transfer from NiFe LDH to Co 9 S 8 , and lower the energy barriers of intermediates for the OER, leading to enhanced electrocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the urchin-like hollow structure with nanopores and super-hydrophilicity can provide desired structural stability, facilitate ion penetration and release bubbles, improving the accessibility of active sites and thereby boosting OER catalytic performance. This work provides a viable route to develop high performance electrocatalysts for the OER.

Seawater Desalination Derived Entirely from Ocean Biomass

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation shows great prospects for seawater desalination with its rapid fast evaporation rate and high photothermal conversion efficiency. Here, a sustainable, biodegradable, non-toxic, and highly efficient full ocean biomass-based solar-driven evaporator is reported, which is composed of chitosan (CS) hydrogel as the hydratable skeleton and cuttlefish ink (CI) as the photothermal material. Under solar irradiation, the cuttlefish ink powder harvests solar energy and heats the surrounding water. Simultaneously, the water in the three-dimensional network of chitosan hydrogel is rapidly replenished by the interconnected porous structure and the hydrophilic functional groups attached to the polymer chains. With its enlarged evaporation surface, high solar absorptance, adequate water transportation, good salt drainage, and heat localization, the CI/CS-based evaporator achieves a remarkable evaporation rate of 4.1 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun irradiance (1 kW m-2) with high-quality freshwater yields. This full ocean biomass-based evaporator with abundant raw material availability provides new possibilities for an efficient, stable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly solar evaporator with guaranteed water quality.

Aqueous processing of organic semiconductors enabled by stable nanoparticles with built-in surfactants

The introduction of oligoether side chains onto a polymer backbone can help to stabilise polymeric dispersions in water without the necessity of surfactants or additives when conjugated polymer nanoparticles are prepared. A series of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) derivatives with different content of a polar thiophene derivative 3-((2-methoxyethoxy)methyl)thiophene was interrogated to find the effect of the polar chains on the stability of the formed nanoparticles, as well as their structural, optical, electrochemical, and electrical properties. Findings indicated that incorporation of 10–20 percent of the polar side chain led to particles that are stable over a period of 42 days, with constant particle size and polydispersity, however the particles from the polymer with 30 percent polar side chain showed aggregation effects. The polymer dispersions showed a stronger solid-like behaviour in water with decreasing polar side chain content, while thin film deposition from water was found to afford globular morphologies and crystallites with more isotropic orientation compared to conventional solution-processed films. As a proof-of-principle, field-effect transistors were fabricated directly from the aqueous dispersions demonstrating that polymers with hydrophilic moieties can be processed in water without the requirement of surfactants.

Highly stretchable ionically crosslinked acrylate elastomers inspired by polyelectrolyte complexes

Dynamic bonds are a powerful approach to tailor the mechanical properties of elastomers and introduce shape-memory, self-healing, and recyclability. Among the library of dynamic crosslinks, electrostatic interactions among oppositely charged ions have been shown to enable tough and resilient elastomers and hydrogels. In this work, we investigate the mechanical properties of ionically crosslinked ethyl acrylate-based elastomers assembled from oppositely charged copolymers. Using both infrared and Raman spectroscopy, we confirm that ionic interactions are established among polymer chains. We find that the glass transition temperature of the complex is in between the two individual copolymers, while the complex demonstrates higher stiffness and more recovery, indicating that ionic bonds can strengthen and enhance recovery of these elastomers. We compare cycles to increasing strain levels at different strain rates, and hypothesize that at fast strain rates ionic bonds dynamically break and reform while entanglements do not have time to slip, and at slow strain rates ionic interactions are disrupted and these entanglements slip significantly. Further, we show that a higher ionic to neutral monomer ratio can increase the stiffness, but its effect on recovery is minimal. Lastly, taking advantage of the versatility of acrylates, ethyl acrylate is replaced with the more hydrophilic 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, and the latter is shown to exhibit better recovery and self-healing at a cost of stiffness and strength. The design principles uncovered for these easy-to-manufacture polyelectrolyte complex-inspired bulk materials can be broadly applied to tailor elastomer stiffness, strength, inelastic recovery, and self-healing for various applications.

Insights into dual-functional modification for water stability enhancement of mesoporous zirconium metal–organic frameworks

The stability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in water affects their ability to function as chemical catalysts, their capacity as adsorbents for separations in water vapor presence, and their usefulness as recyclable water harvesters. Here, we have examined water stability of four node-modified variants of the mesoporous MOF, NU-1000, namely formate-, Acac-, TFacac-, and Facac-NU-1000, comparing these with node-accessible NU-1000. These NU-1000 variants present ligands grafted to NU-1000's hexa-Zr(IV)-oxy nodes by displacing terminal aqua and hydroxo ligands. Facac-NU-1000, containing the most hydrophobic ligands, showed the greatest water stability, being able to undergo at least 20 water adsorption/desorption cycles without loss of water uptake capacity. Computational studies revealed dual salutary functions of installed Facac ligands: (1) enhancement of framework mechanical stability due to electrostatic interactions; and (2) transformation and shielding of the otherwise highly hydrophilic nodes from H-bonding interactions with free water, presumably leading to weaker channel-stressing capillary forces during water evacuation – consistent with trends in free energies of dehydration across the NU-1000 variants. Water harvesting and hydrolysis of chemical warfare agent simulants were examined to gauge the functional consequences of modification and mechanical stabilization of NU-1000 by Facac ligands. The studies revealed a harvesting capacity of ~1.1 L of water vapor per gram of Facac-NU-1000 per sorption cycle. They also revealed retention of catalytic MOF activity following 20 water uptake and release cycles. This study provides insights into the basis for node-ligand-engendered stabilization of wide-channel MOFs against collapse during water removal.

Controlling saturation to improve per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) removal in biochar-amended stormwater bioretention systems

Black carbon-amended bioretention systems are an increasingly popular strategy for the removal of organic contaminants, including poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and other trace organic contaminants (TOrCs), from urban stormwater. Many PFASs preferentially accumulate at the air–water interface, but detention time requirements for stormwater bioretention systems typically result in full saturation of the bioretention systems, effectively removing their air–water interfaces. This study assessed the effect of bioretention system saturation on removal of PFASs, metals, and hydrophilic TOrCs. A field-aged mixture of 40% v/v sand, 30% v/v zeolite, and 30% v/v biochar was packed into columns which were operated with hydraulic controls to remain unsaturated or fully saturated throughout the duration of the experiment. Twenty-four storm events sized to a 95th percentile storm at a California, United States military site were simulated using synthetic stormwater fortified with aqueous film forming foam-derived PFASs, TOrCs, and metals to mimic real-world conditions. Unsaturated conditions outperformed saturated conditions for removal of all PFASs analyzed. A simulated inadvertent system perturbation (i.e. flooding event) in the unsaturated columns did not result in significantly greater mobilization of PFAS mass, suggesting that more sorption to the biochar occurred as a result of the transient retention of PFASs at the air–water interface reducing kinetic sorption limitations. Overall, maintaining unsaturated conditions in a biofilter may extend the sorptive filter lifetime for PFASs by up to 83%. The results have implications for bioretention system application and design for PFAS removal in contaminated catchment areas.

Role of aggregates and microstructure of mixed-ionic–electronic-conductors on charge transport in electrochemical transistors

Synthetic efforts have delivered a library of organic mixed ionic–electronic conductors (OMIECs) with high performance in electrochemical transistors. The most promising materials are redox-active conjugated polymers with hydrophilic side chains that reach high transconductances in aqueous electrolytes due to volumetric electrochemical charging. Current approaches to improve transconductance and device stability focus mostly on materials chemistry including backbone and side chain design. However, other parameters such as the initial microstructure and microstructural rearrangements during electrochemical charging are equally important and are influenced by backbone and side chain chemistry. In this study, we employ a polymer system to investigate the fundamental electrochemical charging mechanisms of OMIECs. We couple in situ electronic charge transport measurements and spectroelectrochemistry with ex situ X-ray scattering electrochemical charging experiments and find that polymer chains planarize during electrochemical charging. Our work shows that the most effective conductivity modulation is related to electrochemical accessibility of well-ordered, interconnected aggregates that host high mobility electronic charge carriers. Electrochemical stress cycling induces microstructural changes, but we find that these aggregates can largely maintain order, providing insights on the structural stability and reversibility of electrochemical charging in these systems. Finally, this work shows the importance of material design for creating OMIECs that undergo structural rearrangements to accommodate ions and electronic charge carriers during which percolating networks are formed for efficient electronic charge transport.

Engineering endosomolytic nanocarriers of diverse morphologies using confined impingement jet mixing

The clinical translation of many biomolecular therapeutics has been hindered by undesirable pharmacokinetic (PK) properties, inadequate membrane permeability, poor endosomal escape and cytosolic delivery, and/or susceptibility to degradation. Overcoming these challenges merits the development of nanoscale drug carriers (nanocarriers) to improve the delivery of therapeutic cargo. Herein, we implement a flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) approach to produce nanocarriers of diverse vesicular morphologies by using various molecular weight PEG-bl-DEAEMA-co-BMA (PEG-DB) polymers. We demonstrated that FNP can produce uniform (PDI < 0.1) particles after 5 impingements, and that by varying the copolymer hydrophilic mass fraction, FNP enables access to a diverse variety of nanoarchitectures including micelles, unilamellar vesicles (polymersomes), and multi-compartment vesicles (MCVs). We synthesized a library of 2 kDa PEG block copolymers, with DEAEMA-co-BMA second block molecular weights of 3, 6, 12, 15, 20, and 30 kDa. All formulations were both pH responsive, endosomolytic, and capable of loading and cytosolically delivering small negatively charged molecules – albeit to different degrees. Using a B16.F10 melanoma model, we showcased the therapeutic potential of a lead FNP formulated PEG-DB nanocarrier, encapsulating the cyclic dinucleotide (CDN) cGAMP to activate the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway in a therapeutically relevant context. Collectively, these data demonstrate that an FNP process can be used to formulate pH-responsive nanocarriers of diverse morphologies using a PEG-DB polymer system. As FNP is an industrially scalable process, these data address the critical translational challenge of producing PEG-DB nanoparticles at scale. Furthermore, the diverse morphologies produced may specialize in the delivery of distinct biomolecular cargos for other therapeutic applications, implicating the therapeutic potential of this platform in an array of disease applications.

Hydrophobic pockets built in polymer micelles enhance the reactivity of Cu 2+ ions

We report the hydrophobicity-enhanced reactivity of Cu2+ ions as an ester hydrolase. Using a dipicolylamine (DPA) containing reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer agent, the synthetic sequence, either hydrophobic or hydrophilic first in amphiphilic block copolymers of polystyrene-block-poly(N'N-dimethylacrylamide) (PS-b-PDMA), was varied to control the location of the binding motif, DPA, in the hydrophobic core or on the hydrated corona of polymer micelles. The hydrophobicity of Cu 2+ sites showed a significant impact (as large as 60 times more activity) on their catalytic efficiency towards ester hydrolase. With two different kinetic modes, including Michaelis–Menten and the reverse saturation kinetics models, the binding constant Kb of the substrates to Cu 2+ sites were quantitatively analyzed and we demonstrate that hydrophobicity favors the binding of the substrates to Cu2+ sites at polymer micelles with smaller sizes, however, K b decays exponentially with micellar diameters. Despite the diffusion barrier, hydrophobicity shows a profound impact on the catalytic rate constant kc that measures the single conversion rate of bound substrates to products. There is a 16–20 times kinetic enhancement in the hydrolase activity, completely endowed by the hydrophobic microenvironment of Cu 2+ sites compared to micelles with similar sizes. Our results indicate how the hydrophobicity of Cu 2+ -containing micelles can impact the catalytic efficiency and potentially illustrate a promising way toward the design of bioinspired catalysts.
