Enhancing the hunt for new phenomena in dijet final states using anomaly detection filters at the high-luminosity large Hadron Collider

In the realm of dijet searches in high-energy physics, a significant challenge has emerged: with experiments producing more and more data, the traditional methods of using analytic functions to describe dijet mass spectra start to fail. Here, to address this, we suggest the application of an anomaly detection approach to eliminate less interesting background events based on event final states. This method not only bypasses the limitations of conventional background models but also significantly enhances our ability to detect potential signals of new physics. Through simulations that mimic the conditions of the upcoming high-luminosity large Hadron collider, we demonstrate the strength and efficiency of this approach in dealing with large data volumes. The integration of unsupervised machine learning into our experimental framework paves the way for a promising avenue to unveil hidden physics discoveries within the overwhelming influx of data.

Systematic investigation of the particle spectra in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

We investigate the charged particle spectra produced in the heavy-ion collisions at nine centralities from different systems, i.e. Pb+Pb at √ s NN = 2.76 TeV and 5.02 TeV as well as Xe+Xe at √ s NN = 5.44 TeV, at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using one empirical formula inspired by the stationary solution of the Fokker-Planck equation, dubbed as the generalized Fokker-Planck solution (GFPS). Our results show that the GFPS can reproduce the experimental particle spectrum up to transverse momentum pT about 45 GeV/c with the maximum discrepancy 30% covering 10 orders of magnitude. Here, the discrepancy between the data and the results from the GFPS decreases to 15% when the maximum of the charged particle transverse momentum is cut to 20 GeV/c. We confirmed that the Tsallis distribution derived from the non-extensive statistics, which can reproduce the particle spectra produced in small collision systems, such as p+p, up to few hundreds GeV/c, can only apply to systematically study the particle spectra up to 8 GeV/c in A+A collisions at LHC, as pointed out in the study of identified particle spectra in Pb+Pb collisions at √ s NN = 2.76 TeV. A brief discussion on GFPS is also given.

Entanglement minimization in hadronic scattering with pions

Recent work [S. R. Beane, D. B. Kaplan, N. Klco and M. J. Savage, Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 102001 (2019), arXiv:1812.03138.] conjectured that entanglement is minimized in low-energy hadronic scattering processes. It was shown that the minimization of the entanglement power (EP) of the low-energy baryon–baryon [Formula: see text]-matrix implies novel spin–flavor symmetries that are distinct from large-[Formula: see text] QCD predictions and are confirmed by high-precision lattice QCD simulations. Here, the conjecture of minimal entanglement is investigated for scattering processes involving pions and nucleons. The EP of the [Formula: see text]-matrix is constructed for the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] systems, and the consequences of minimization of entanglement are discussed and compared with large-[Formula: see text] QCD expectations.

Charm meson and charm-meson molecule in an expanding hadron gas

We present our studies on the evolution of charm mesons after the kinetic freeze-out of the expanding hadron gas produced in a heavy-ion collision and the thermal correction to a loosely bound charm-meson molecule in a pion gas. The πD* → πD* reaction rates have t-channel singularities that give contributions inversely proportional to the thermal width of the D. The ratio of the D 0 and D + production rate can differ significantly from those predicted using the measured D* branching fractions. The thermal correction to a loosely bound charm-meson molecule in a pion gas comes primarily from the complex thermal energy shift of the charm-meson constituents.

Dynamic Aperture Evaluation for the Hadron Storage Ring in the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is aiming at a design luminosity of 1e34 cm⁻²s⁻¹. To maintain such a high luminosity, both beams in the EIC need an acceptable beam lifetime in the presence of the beam-beam interaction. For this purpose, we carried out weak-strong element-by-element particle tracking to evaluate the long-term dynamic aperture for the hadron ring lattice design. We improved our simulation code SimTrack to treat some new lattice design features, such as radially offset on-momentum orbits, coordinate transformations in the interaction region, etc. In this article, we will present the preliminary dynamic aperture calculation results with β^{*}- function scan, radial orbit shift, crossing angle collision, and magnetic field errors.

The Dark Machines Anomaly Score Challenge: Benchmark Data and Model Independent Event Classification for the Large Hadron Collider

We describe the outcome of a data challenge conducted as part of the Dark Machines (https://www.darkmachines.org) initiative and the Les Houches 2019 workshop on Physics at TeV colliders. The challenged aims to detect signals of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using unsupervised machine learning algorithms. First, we propose how an anomaly score could be implemented to define model-independent signal regions in LHC searches. We define and describe a large benchmark dataset, consisting of >1 billion simulated LHC events corresponding to 10\, fb^{-1} 10 f b − 1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. We then review a wide range of anomaly detection and density estimation algorithms, developed in the context of the data challenge, and we measure their performance in a set of realistic analysis environments. We draw a number of useful conclusions that will aid the development of unsupervised new physics searches during the third run of the LHC, and provide our benchmark dataset for future studies at https://www.phenoMLdata.org. Code to reproduce the analysis is provided at https://github.com/bostdiek/DarkMachines-UnsupervisedChallenge.

Efficient phase-space generation for hadron collider event simulation

We present a simple yet efficient algorithm for phase-space integration at hadron colliders. Individual mappings consist of a single t-channel combined with any number of s-channel decays, and are constructed using diagrammatic information. The factorial growth in the number of channels is tamed by providing an option to limit the number of s-channel topologies. We provide a publicly available, parallelized code in C++ and test its performance in typical LHC scenarios.

Characterizing the hadronization of parton showers using the HOMER method

We update the HOMER method, a technique to solve a restricted version of the inverse problem of hadronization – extracting the Lund string fragmentation function f(z) from data using only observable information. Here, we demonstrate its utility by extracting f(z) from synthetic Pythia simulations using high-level observables constructed on an event-by-event basis, such as multiplicities and shape variables. Four cases of increasing complexity are considered, corresponding to e + e − collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 90 ≥ v producing either a string stretched between a $q$ and $\bar{q}$ containing no gluons; the same string containing one gluon g with fixed kinematics; the same but the gluon has varying kinematics; and the most realistic case, strings with an unrestricted number of gluons that is the end-result of a parton shower. We demonstrate the extraction of f(z) in each case, with the result of only a relatively modest degradation in performance of the HOMER method with the increased complexity of the string system.

Constraining the nuclear gluon PDF with inclusive hadron production data

The nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) of gluons are known to be difficult to determine with fits of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and Drell-Yan (DY) data alone. Therefore, the nCTEQ15 analysis of nuclear PDFs added inclusive neutral pion production data from RHIC to help in constraining the gluon. In this analysis, we present a new global analysis of nuclear PDFs based on a much larger set of single inclusive light hadron data from RHIC and the LHC. Using our new nCTEQ code (nCTEQ++) with an optimized version of INCNLO we study systematically the limitations of the theory and the impact of the fragmentation function uncertainty.

A general-mass scheme for prompt charm production at hadron colliders

In these proceedings, we apply the recently developed S-ACOT-MPS factorization scheme at the next-to-leading order to prompt charm production at hadron colliders. It provides a good agreement with experimental data on charm meson production measured by LHCb at 7 and 13 TeV. The low- p_T p T data are on the margins of the theoretical error bands, emphasizing the importance of including contributions beyond the next-to-leading order.

Eddy current studies for the beam screen of the Electron-Ion Collider hadron storage ring superconducting magnets

A copper-clad stainless steel beam screen will be installed in each of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) superconducting (SC) magnets used for making the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). Eddy currents are induced within conductors to oppose a changing magnetic flux. Eddy currents will appear on the EIC HSR beam screens during ramp up and ramp down, after a magnet quenches and when reversing the polarity of the γ transition jump quadrupoles during γ transition crossing. This study evaluates the magnitude of the eddy currents, the temperature increase due to Joule heating and the stress at the beam screens from the eddy-current induced force.
