Mixing insert for foam dispensing apparatus

A device for mixing foam ingredients is described. The device comprises an arrangement of lands situated about a cylindrical elongated shaft-like member with each land having a slot. The slots of alternate lands are positioned 180 deg from each other so that as the ingredients flow through the mixing chamber they flow from adjacent one side of the housing to the other dividing as such passes around the shaft-like member.

Open cell fire-resistant foam

Candidate polyphosphazene polymers were investigated to develop a fire-resistant, thermally stable and flexible open cell foam. The copolymers were prepared in several mole ratios of the substituent side chains and a (nominal) 40:60 derivative was selected for formulation studies. Synthesis of the polymers involved solution by polymerization of hexachlorophosphazene to soluble high molecular weight poly(dichlorophosphazene), followed by derivatization of the resultant polymer in a normal fashion to give polymers in high yield and high molecular weight. Small amounts of a cure site were incorporated into the polymer for vulcanization purposes. The poly(aryloxyphosphazenes) exhibited good thermal stability and the first polymer mentioned above exhibited the best thermal behavior of all the candidate polymers studied.

Closed-cell foams produced from sputter-deposited aluminum

Sputter deposited aluminum containing argon was melted to produce foam, both in the earth's gravitational field and in a zero-gravity space environment. Experiments leading to trapping of up to 270 ppm argon sputtering gas in pure aluminum during high-rate dc triode sputter deposition are discussed. Conduct of the melting experiments and design of the furnace used are described. Metallography; an analysis of bubble size, distribution, and morphology; and a preliminary description of the kinetics are also presented.

Toxicity studies of a polyurethane rigid foam

Relative toxicity tests were performed on a polyurethane foam containing a trimethylopropane-based polyol and an organophosphate flame retardant. The routine screening procedure involved the exposure of four Swiss albino male mice in a 4.2 liter hemispherical chamber to the products generated by pyrolyzing a 1.00 g sample at a heating rate of 40 deg C/min from 200 to 800 C in the absence of air flow. In addition to the routine screening, experiments were performed with a very rapid rise to 800 C, with nominal 16 and 48 ml/sec air flow and with varying sample rates. No unusual toxicity was observed with either gradual or rapid pyrolysis to 800 C. Convulsions and seizures similar to those previously reported were observed when the materials were essentially flash pyrolyzed at 800 C in the presence of air flow, and the toxicity appeared unusual because of low sample weights required to produce death.

High-rise foam-in-place process

Large polyurethane parts are molded by sequential pouring without waiting for foam to cure. Joints between pours and tops of parts are free of voids and need no trimming.

Evaluation of a low-density polyimide foam in a dynamic, high temperature environment

A low density polyimide foam material was tested in an arc tunnel to determine its potential for heat shield application on aerospace vehicles. The results show that the material has some reuse potential at surface temperatures as high as 750 K. When a black refractory paint was applied to the surface of the material, the surface recession was negligible at 750 K. An analytical thermal conductivity was derived for this material which, combined with measured thermal property values, can be used to make preliminary design thickness calculations for heat shield applications.

Polychloroprene flexible foam as a reference material

Polychloroprene flexible foam was evaluated as a reference material for fire toxicity tests. A commercial sample was evaluated using nine different test conditions of the USF methodology. The material exhibited a wide range of relative toxicity depending on the test conditions. Times to incapacitation and times to death were shortest at 16 ml/sec (1 l/min) air flow, at any fixed heating rate and upper limit temperature.

Flash-fire propensity of rigid foam insulation

Twelve samples of rigid foam insulation were evaluated for flash-fire propensity, using the USF flash-fire screening test method. These materials exhibited little or no flash-fire propensity under these particular test conditions.

"Grinding" cavities in polyurethane foam

Grinding tool installed on conventional milling machine cuts precise cavities in foam blocks. Method is well suited for prototype or midsize production runs and can be adapted to computer control for mass production. Method saves time and materials compared to bonding or hot wire techniques.

Foam-filled cushions for sliding trays

Polytetrafluoroethylene tube filled with polyurethane foam forms low friction sliding surface that cushions vibrations and absorbs manufacturing tolerances and misalignment. Possible uses include packaging of components for shipping and seals for doors in lockers, cars, and refrigerators.

Effects of soft foam insulation impact

High temperature reusable surface insulation (HTRSI) tiles were impacted by a variety of foam insulation materials typical of the debris expected to strike the shuttle orbiter during the initial phases of flight. Failure of the HIRSI coating was strongly dependent on the density and size of the projectile. The failure threshold was as low as 140 ft/sec for rubber and as high as 740 ft/sec for styrofoam. In addition, the impact pressure was measured for a variety of debris materials as a function of velocity.

Catalysts for polyimide foams from aromatic isocyanates and aromatic dianhydrides

Polyimide foam products having greatly improved burn-through and flame-spread resistance are prepared by the reaction of aromatic polyisocyanates with aromatic dianhydrides in the presence of metallic salts of octoic acid. The salts, for example stannous octoate, ferric octoate and aluminum octoate, favor the formation of imide linkages at the expense of other possible reactions.

The acoustical structure of highly porous open-cell foams

This work concerns both the theoretical prediction and measurement of structural parameters in open-cell highly porous polyurethane foams. Of particular interest are the dynamic flow resistance, thermal time constant, and mass structure factor and their dependence on frequency and geometry of the cellular structure. The predictions of cell size parameters, static flow resistance, and heat transfer as accounted for by a Nusselt number are compared with measurement. Since the static flow resistance and inverse thermal time constant are interrelated via the 'mean' pore size parameter of Biot, only two independent measurements such as volume porosity and mean filament diameter are required to make the predictions for a given fluid condition. The agreements between this theory and nonacoustical experiments are excellent.

Charring, Nonmelting Epoxy Foams

Addition of vanadium compounds prevents melting. For safety, structural plastic foam should turn into rigid char when it burns, without melting. Addition of small amounts of vanadium compounds to some epoxy resins promotes char formation.

Low-Density High-Strength Foamed Materials

Molten bubbles of metal or plastic coalesce into strong, lightweight materials that look like solidified foam. Bubbles formed in compartment that receives molten material and compressed gas that fills bubbles. Compartment has matrix of nozzles. Leaving nozzles, bubbles fall into acoustic chamber and coalesce; then drop through funnel and are cast into desired shape by extrusion or molding. Materials used for construction, extruded into molds, sawed, nailed, and generally handled as wood.

A low cost wind turbine blade based on a stainless steel fiberglass foam Budd blade design concept, was evaluated for its principle characteristics, low cost features, and its advantages and disadvantages. A blade structure was designed and construction methods and materials were selected. A complete blade tooling concepts, various technical and economic analysis, and evaluations of the blade design were performed. A comprehensive fatigue test program is conducted to provide data to verify the design stress allowables.

Partial Analysis of Insta-Foam

Insta-Foam, used as a thermal insulator for the non-critical area of the external tank during the prelaunch phase to minimize icing, is a two-component system. Component A has polyisocyanates, blowing agents, and stabilizers; Component B has the polyols, catalysts, blowing agents, stabilizers and fire retardant. The blowing agents are Freon 11 and Freon 12, the stabilizers are silicone surfactants, the catalysts are tertiary amines, and the fire retardant is tri-(beta-chloro-isopropyl) phosphate (PCF). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was quantitatively identified polyols and PFC.
