Experimental control requirements for life sciences

The Life Sciences dedicated Spacelab will enable scientists to test hypotheses in various disciplines. Building upon experience gained in mission simulations, orbital flight test experiments, and the first three Spacelab missions, NASA will be able to progressively develop the engineering and management capabilities necessary for the first Life Sciences Spacelab. Development of experiments for these missions will require implementation of life-support systems not previously flown in space. Plant growth chambers, animal holding facilities, aquatic specimen life-support systems, and centrifuge-mounted specimen holding units are examples of systems currently being designed and fabricated for flight.

Overview of integrated programs for aerospace-vehicle design (IPAD)

An overview of a joint industry/government project, denoted Integrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design (IPAD), which focuses on development of technology and associated software for integrated company-wide management of engineering information is presented. Results to date are summarized and include an in-depth documentation of a representative design process for a large engineering project, the definition and design of computer-aided design software needed to support that process, and the release of prototype software to integrated selected design functions.

Proceedings of the 12th Annual Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) Applications and Planning Meeting

The meeting gave PTTI managers, systems engineers, and program planners a transparent view of the state-of-the-art, an opportunity to express needs, a view of important future trends, and a review of relevant past accomplishments. The PTTI users were provided with new and useful applications, procedures, and techniques. Emphasis is placed on military applications and avionics.

Relocation of the Deep Space Network Maintenance Center

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory maintains a Deep Space Network (DSN) maintenance center (DMC), whose task is to engineer and manage the repair and calibration program for the electronic and mechanical equipment used in the tracking stations located at Madrid, Spain, and Canberra, Australia. The DMC also manages the Goldstone complex maintenance facility (GCMF), whose task is to repair and calibrate the Goldstone electronic and mechanical equipment. The rationale for moving the facility to Barstow, California, and the benefits derived from the move are discussed.

On-board communication for active-control transport aircraft

An investigation of active control communications sponsored by the NASA Langley Research Center is summarized. Particular attention is given to comparative architectures, for which a common set of requirements is generated as a baseline. Most of the requirements are aircraft functional in nature, such as stability and command augmentation, structural load relief, flight path control, flight control linkage, flight monitoring, management, navigation, engine control, and ground communication; the time element, the hazard environment, and the communications capacity estimation are also important factors. The architectures involve several communication technologies, including dedicated links, broadcast busing, and multiplex busing. The multiplex bus system provides the greatest flexibility and installation efficiency. A future homogeneous network system is also proposed, which would be fault and damage tolerant and would, with advanced technology, avoid the problems of designing a very large and flight critical multiplex bus system.

User involvement in IPAD software development

The extensive user involvement in the software development of IPAD and the functionality of the IPAD prototype as viewed by the user are addressed. Although not a production system that can support an ongoing design process, the IPAD prototype is useful for the potential user as well as the interested system designer and is an essential tool for the companies committed to the use of the IPAD system. User refers to the engineer or manager responsible for the design, manufacture, or maintenance of a product, together with those supporting these functions.

Results of innovative communication processes on productivity gains in a high technology environment

The technology which resulted in performance breakthroughs at engineering and management services is discussed. As a result of the innovative approaches of communicating productivity concepts to the employees, specific outcomes can now be pinpointed at all levels of the organization such as: (1) employee-headed program; (2) performance feedback processes; and (3) an investigative approach to creating leadership. The Lockheed Corporation began the innovative trend in 1974 when they became the first company to introduce quality circles in America. Although some of Lockheed-EMSCO's processes may sound different from traditional improvement processes, the context out of which those to be presented evolved has sustained more than 10 years of positive results through employee involvement activities.
