Process research of non-CZ silicon material

Advanced processing techniques for non-CZ silicon sheet material that might improve the cost effectiveness of photovoltaic module production were investigated. Specifically, the simultaneous diffusion of liquid boron and liquid phosphorus organometallic precursors into n-type dendritic silicon web was examined. The simultaneous junction formation method for solar cells was compared with the sequential junction formation method. The electrical resistivity of the n-n and p-n junctions was discussed. Further research activities for this program along with a program documentation schedule are given.

Intermodulation Product Levels in Flame-sprayed Materials

A preliminary investigation on intermodulation product (IMP) levels of fiberglass-backed flame-sprayed surfaces was completed. The purpose was to demonstrate the use of modified techniques and materials in combustion flame spraying of formed surfaces in reducing intermodulation products. The approach used improved metal wire stock without impurities or with smaller droplet sizes, high-temperature release agents, wire stock with low electrical resistance, variations in spraying distances, and intense buffing processes which amalgamate the material gaps and droplets in an effort to fabricate IMP-free lightweight and low cost subreflectors. Positive material candidates were found with an IMP level around -150 dB, which is comparable to solid aluminum surfaces used as a reference.

Simultaneous elastic and photoelastic calibration of birefringent orthotropic model materials

Transmission photoelastic analysis of composite models has been shown in recent years to be a viable stress analysis method for composite structures. However, difficulties in the fabrication of the model materials require the development of efficient mechanical and optical calibration procedures. In this paper, the methods for measuring elastic and photoelastic constants of composites are briefly reviewed. Then a new method, utilizing a relatively small calibration specimen, is described. In this method, electrical resistance strain gauges are mounted at selected points of a half-plane model and photoelastic measurements and strain readings are simultaneously taken. The data are processed by a least-squares procedure to yield the elastic and photoelastic constants. Comparison of results obtained by the proposed method with the results from conventional tests shows good agreement.

Electrically conductive black optical paint

An electrically conductive flat black paint has been developed for use on the Galileo spacecraft which will orbit Jupiter in the late 1980s. The paint, designed for equipment operating in high-energy radiation fields, has multipurpose functions. Its electrical conductivity keeps differential charging of the spacecraft external surfaces and equipment to a minimum, preventing the buildup of electrostatic fields and arcing. Its flat black aspect minimizes the effects of stray light and unwanted reflectances, when used in optical instruments and on sunshades. Its blackness is suitable, also, for thermal control, when the paint is put on spacecraft surfaces. The paint has good adherence properties, as measured by tape tests, when applied properly to a surface. The electrically conductive paint which was developed has the following characteristics: an electrical resistivity of 5 x 10 to the 7th ohms per square; a visual light total reflectance of approximately 5 percent; an infrared reflectance of 0.13 measured over a spectrum from 10 to the (-5.5) power to 0.001 meter; a solar absorptivity, alpha-s, of 0.93, and a thermal emissivity, epsilon, of 0.87, resulting in an alpha-s/epsilon of 1.07. The formula for making the paint and the process for applying it are described.

Present state of boron-carbon thermoelectric materials

Boron-carbon p-type thermoelectric materials show promise for use in advanced thermal-to-electric space power conversion systems. Here, recent data on the thermoelectric properties of boron-carbon materials, such as B9C, B13C2, B15C2, and B4C, are reviewed. In particular, attention is given to the effect of the compositional homogeneity and residual impurity content on the Seeback coefficient, electrical resistivity, and thermal conductivity of these materials. The effect of carbon content for a given level of impurity and degree of homogeneity is also discussed.

Electronic properties of carbon fibers intercalated with copper chloride

Copper chloride intercalated pitch-based carbon fibers are found to have electrical resistivities as low as 12.9 micro-ohm-cm, and are air- and thermally-stable at and above room temperature. This is therefore a good candidate system for conductor application. In addition, Shubnikov-deHaas quantum oscillatory effects were found, and electronic properties of the intercalated fiber are studied using magnetic fields to 20 tesla.

An improved process for preparing Tris(N-methylamino)methylsilane monomer for use in producing silicon carbide-silicon nitride fibers

A technique is described for the preparation of tris(N-methylamino)methylsilane by a process which may be used for large-scale production. The steps include synthesis, filtration to remove the salt byproduct, and distillation to remove the product from the reaction mixture under anhydrous conditions. Tris(N-methylamino)methylsilane is a precursor used to prepare silicon carbide-silicon nitride fibers that have been shown to have high tensile modulus (29 x 10 to the 6th psi for 0.4 mil diameter), high tensile strength (10.5 x 10 to the 4th psi), and high electrical resistivity (7 x 10 to the 8th ohm-cm).

Zeta potential in ceramic industry

Deflocculation, electrical conductivity and zeta potential (ZP) are studied for the addition of 0 to 10000 ppm Na2SiO3 deflocculator to slips obtained from three argillaceous materials (kaolin d'Arvor, ball clay Hyplas 64, and/or Granger Clay No. 10). The quantity of Na2SO3 required to deflocculate a slip is independent of the density but differes for each clay. The ZP is directly related to the density of the slip. The higher the ZP the more stable a slip is; the value of the ZP of a mixture does not follow a simple law but the electrical resistance of a mixture does follow a simple additive law. The ZP appears to have linear relation with the specific surface of the argillaceous material.

Studies on copper alloys containing chromium on the copper side phase diagram

Specimens were prepared from vacuum melted alloys of high purity vacuum melted copper and electrolytic chromium. The liquidus and eutectic point were determined by thermal analysis. The eutectic temperature is 1974.8 F and its composition is 1.28 wt% of chromium. The determination of solid solubility of chromium in copper was made by microscopic observation and electrical resistivity measurement. The solubility of chromium in solid copper is 0.6 wt% at 1050 F, 0.4 wt% at 1000 F, 0.25 wt% at 950 F, 0.17 wt% at 900 F, and 0.30 wt% at 840 F.

Initial aging phenomena in copper-chromium alloys

The effects of quenching and aging temperatures on the initial aging curves of Cu-Cr alloy were examined mainly by means of electrical resistivity measurements. Three Cu-Cr alloy specimens having 0.24, 0.74, and 1.0% Cr were solution-treated at 950-1050 C, quenched into ice-water, and subsequently aged at 300-500 C. The results were as follows: (1) At the very early stage of aging (within about 30 sec), an abrupt decrease of resistivity with lowering aging tempratures. (T sub A) and rising solution temperatures (T sub S) was observed at (T sub A) up to about 400 C. In contrast, a transient increase of resistivity with rising T sub A and lowering T sub S was observed at T sub A from about 450 to 500 C. These phenomena seem to be caused by a rapid formation of solute clusters and the reversion of clusters formed during quenching, which are enhanced by quenched-in vacancies, respectively. (2) The amount of precipitation increased at the latter stage of aging with rising T sub S and T sub A as generally expected, where T sub S was not so high as to form secondary defects. (3) As a result, the initial aging phenomena in Cr-Cr alloy were revealed to be complicated against expectations. This was considered to be due to the migration energy of vacancies so larger in Cu-base.

Continuous laminar smoke generator

A smoke generator capable of emitting a very thin, laminar stream of smoke for use in high detail flow visualization was invented. The generator is capable of emitting a larger but less stable rope of smoke. The invention consists of a pressure supply and fluid supply which supply smoke generating fluid to feed. The feed tube is directly heated by electrical resistance from current supplied by power supply and regulated by a constant temperature controller. A smoke exit hole is drilled in the wall of feed tube. Because feed tube is heated both before and past exit hole, no condensation of smoke generating occurs at the smoke exit hole, enabling the production of a very stable smoke filament. The generator is small in size which avoids wind turbulence in front of the test model.

Thermoelectric properties of lanthanum sulfide

The Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Hall effect have been studied in gamma-phase La(3-x)S4(LaS/y/) for compositions with x in the range from 0.04 to 0.3 (y in the range from 1.35 to 1.48) in order to ascertain its suitability for high-temperature (300 to 1400 K) thermoelectric energy conversion. In this temperature and composition range the material behaves as an extrinsic semiconductor whose degenerate carrier concentration is controlled by the stoichiometric ratio of La to S. A maximum figure-of-merit (Z) of approximately 0.0005 per K at a composition x = 0.3, y = 1.48 (LaS/1.48/) was obtained.

Dynamic Thermophysical Measurements in Space

The objective is to develop techniques for the dynamic measurement of selected thermophysical properties (e.g., heat of fusion, heat capacity, electrical resistivity) of solids and liquids at temperatures above 2000 K in a near zero-gravity environment. The first phase involves establishing the stability (geometrical) limits of specimens when rapidly heated to temperatures beyond their melting point. A test equipment package was designed and constructed for this purpose, consisting of removable specimen cartridge cells, a battery-bank power supply, a high-speed framing camera, a single-wavelength pyrometer, and electronic switching and control equipment. The operation of the equipment package was tested in the laboratory in preparation for near zero-gravity experiments to be performed during a KC-135 flight in September, 1984.

High temperature static strain sensor development program

Electrical resistance strain gages useful for static strain measurements on nickel or cobalt superalloy parts inside a gas turbine engine on a test stand are being developed. Measurements of this type are of great importance in meeting the goals of the HOST program because, without reliable knowledge of the stresses and strains which exist in specific components, it will be difficult to fully appreciate where improvements in design and materials can be implemented. The first part of the effort consisted of a strain gage alloy development program which will be followed by an investigation of complete strain gage systems which will use the best of the alloys developed together with other system improvements.
