Real-time Characterization of the Fine Structure and Dynamics of an Electrical Double Layer at Electrode-electrolyte Interfaces

The chemisorption of species from supporting electrolytes on electrode surfaces is ubiquitous in electrochemical systems and affects the dynamics and mechanism of various electrochemical reactions. The understanding of chemical structure and property of the resulting electrical double layer is vital but limited. In this work, we operando probed the electrochemical interface between a gold electrode surface and a common supporting electrolyte, phosphate buffer, using our newly developed in situ liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry. We surprisingly found that on the positively charged gold electrode surface sodium cations were anchored in the stern layer in a partially dehydrated form by formation of compact ion pairs with the accumulated phosphate anions. The resulting strong and dense adsorption phase was further revealed to retard the electro-oxidation reaction of ascorbate. This finding addressed one major gap in the fundamental science of electrode-electrolyte interfaces that where and how the cations reside in the double layer to impose effects on electrochemical reactions, providing insights into engineering of better electrode-electrolyte interfaces in electrochemical processes.

Characterization of solar cells for space applications. Volume 5: Electrical characteristics of OCLI 225-micron MLAR wraparound cells as a function of intensity, temperature, and irradiation

Computed statistical averages and standard deviations with respect to the measured cells for each intensity temperature measurement condition are presented. Display averages and standard deviations of the cell characteristics in a two dimensional array format are shown: one dimension representing incoming light intensity, and another, the cell temperature. Programs for calculating the temperature coefficients of the pertinent cell electrical parameters are presented, and postirradiation data are summarized.

Characterization of solar cells for space applications. Volume 14: Electrical characteristics of Hughes liquid phase epitaxy gallium arsenide solar cells as a function of intensity, temperature and irradiation

Electrical characteristics of liquid phase epitaxy, P/N gallium aluminum arsenide solar cells are presented in graphical and tabular format as a function of solar illumination intensity and temperature. The solar cells were exposed to 1 MeV electron fluences of, respectively, 0, one hundred trillion, one quadrillion, and ten quadrillion e/sq cm.

E and DE/DT waveshapes for narrow bipolar pulses in intracloud lightning

Wideband electric field and dE/dt waveforms were recorded and digitized at a 100 MS/s rate at KSC during the summer and fall of 1989. These waveforms were combined to produce composite electric fields with an effective bandwidth of 3 to 50 MHz. Bipolar electric field pulses are characterized in terms of their E and dE/dt waveshapes. Half width mean durations were found to be 1.83 and 3.64 microseconds for negative and positive bipolar pulses respectively. Twenty of thirty of these pulses were found to occur independently of any other lightning activity. Analysis of the frequency content of these pulses as a function of time shows that radiation at different frequencies peak at different times. In addition to the initial peak and subsequent overshoot in the composite E waveshape, secondary humps following the initial peak are characterized according to their time of occurrence within the pulse. THe 156 narrow negative bipolar pulses and 10 positive narrow bipolar pulses are analyzed. The dE/dt signatures range from impulsive variations lasting several microseconds both before and after the initial peak of the electric field pulse, to smoother variations closely associated with peak.
