Tunable product selectivity on demand: a mechanism-guided Lewis acid co-catalyst for CO 2 electroreduction to ethylene glycol
This work illustrates the feasibility of using Lewis acid/base co-catalysts to change the established chemical reaction mechanism of an electrocatalyst to form a new, chemically predictable, more valuable product in high yield.
High-Efficiency Electrochemical Conversion of CO 2 to Ethylene
During the past century, our civilization’s technological advances have been driven by the conversion of carbon-rich fossil fuels into electricity, heat, polymers, fertilizers, and other carbon-based products that are the foundation of modern society. It is now clear, however, that this carbon economy is no longer sustainable for humanity or our ecosystem. A study by the National Academies showed that to avoid catastrophic climate change, we not only need to dramatically and rapidly reduce global emissions of CO 2 , but we will need to remove billions of tons of CO 2 from the earth’s atmosphere and oceans by mid-century. This presents a massive, unprecedented challenge to our species, but if managed well it also represents a historic opportunity: capture and utilization of CO 2 is arguably the largest economic opportunity of the next hundred years, also known as “industry of the future”.

Ethylene Dehydroaromatization over Ga‐ZSM‐5 Catalysts: Nature and Role of Gallium Speciation
Abstract Bifunctional catalysis in zeolites possessing both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites offers unique opportunities to tailor shape selectivity and enhance catalyst performance. Here, we examine the impact of framework and extra‐framework gallium species on enriched aromatics production in zeolite ZSM‐5. We compare three distinct methods of preparing Ga‐ZSM‐5 and reveal direct (single step) synthesis leads to optimal catalysts compared to post‐synthesis methods. Using a combination of state‐of‐the‐art characterization, catalyst testing, and density functional theory calculations, we show that Ga Lewis acid sites strongly favor aromatization. Our findings also suggest Ga(framework)–Ga(extra‐framework) pairings, which can only be achieved in materials prepared by direct synthesis, are the most energetically favorable sites for reaction pathways leading to aromatics. Calculated acid site exchange energies between extra‐framework Ga at framework sites comprised of either Al or Ga reveal a site‐specific preference for stabilizing Lewis acids, which is qualitatively consistent with experimental measurements. These findings indicate the possibility of tailoring Lewis acid siting by the placement of Ga heteroatoms at distinct tetrahedral sites in the zeolite framework, which can have a marked impact on catalyst performance relative to conventional H‐ZSM‐5.
Facet‐Selective Deposition of Ultrathin Al 2 O 3 on Copper Nanocrystals for Highly Stable CO 2 Electroreduction to Ethylene
Abstract Catalysts based on Cu nanocrystals (NCs) for electrochemical CO 2 ‐to‐C 2+ conversion with high activity have been a subject of considerable interest, but poor stability and low selectivity for a single C 2+ product remain obstacles for realizing sustainable carbon‐neutral cycles. Here, we used the facet‐selective atomic layer deposition (FS‐ALD) technique to selectively cover the (111) surface of Cu NCs with ultrathin Al 2 O 3 to increase the exposed facet ratio of (100)/(111), resulting in a faradaic efficiency ratio of C 2 H 4 /CH 4 for overcoated Cu NCs 22 times higher than that for pure Cu NCs. Peak performance of the overcoated catalyst (Cu NCs/Al 2 O 3 ‐10C) reaches a C 2 H 4 faradaic efficiency of 60.4 % at a current density of 300 mA cm −2 in 5 M KOH electrolyte, when using a gas diffusion electrode flow cell. Moreover, the Al 2 O 3 overcoating effectively suppresses the dynamic mobility and the aggregation of Cu NCs, which explains the negligible activity loss and selectivity degradations of Cu NCs/Al 2 O 3 ‐10C shown in stability tests.

Designing Heteroatom-Codoped Iron Metal–Organic Framework for Promotional Photoreduction of Carbon Dioxide to Ethylene
Rational engineering active sites and vantage defects of catalysts are promising but grand challenging task to enhance photoreduction CO 2 to high value-added C2 products. In this study, we designed an N,S-codoped Fe-based MIL-88B catalyst with well-defined bipyramidal hexagonal prism morphology via a facile and effective process, which was synthesized by addition of appropriate 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) and acetic acid to the reaction solution. Under simulated solar irradiation, the designed catalyst exhibits high C 2 H 4 evolution yield of 17.7 μmol g -1 ∙h, which has been rarely achieved in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction process. The synergistic effect of Fe-N coordinated sites and reasonable defects in the N,S-codoped photocatalyst can accelerate the migration of photogenerated carriers, resulting in high electron density, and this in turn helps to facilitate the formation and dimerization of C-C coupling intermediates for C 2 H 4 effectively.
Correlation of Processing and Structure in an Ethylene‐Glycol Side‐Chain Modified Polythiophene via Combined X‐Ray Scattering and 4D Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy
The results of a combined grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and 4D scanning transmission microscopy (4D-STEM) analysis of the effects of thermal processing on poly(3[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]-methylthiophene-2,5-diyl) are reported, a conjugated semiconducting polymer used as the active layer in organic electrochemical transistor devices. GIWAXS provides a measure of overall crystallinity in the film, while 4D-STEM produces real-space maps of the morphology and orientation of individual crystallites along with their spatial extent and distribution. The sensitivity of the 4D-STEM detector allows for collection of electron diffraction patterns at each position in an image scan while limiting the imparted electron dose to below the damage threshold. In conclusion, the effects of heat treatment on the distribution and type of crystallites present in the films is determined.
