System for a displaying at a remote station data generated at a central station and for powering the remote station from the central station

A system for displaying at a remote station data generated at a central station and for powering the remote station from the central station is presented. A power signal is generated at the central station and time multiplexed with the data and then transmitted to the remote station. An energy storage device at the remote station is responsive to the transmitted power signal to provide energizing power for the circuits at the remote station during the time interval data is being transmitted to the remote station. Energizing power for the circuits at the remote station is provided by the power signal itself during the time this signal is transmitted. Preferably the energy storage device is a capacitor which is charged by the power signal during the time the power is transmitted and is slightly discharged during the time the data is transmitted to energize the circuits at the remote station.

Automated system for integration and display of physiological response data

The system analysis approach was applied in a study of physiological systems in both 1-g and weightlessness, for short and long term experiments. A whole body, algorithm developed as the first step in the construction of a total body simulation system is described and an advanced biomedical computer system concept including interactive display/command consoles is discussed. The documentation of the design specifications, design and development studies, and user's instructions (which include program listings) for these delivered end-terms; the reports on the results of many research and feasibility studies; and many subcontract reports are cited in the bibliography.

A Concept for the Processing and Display of Thematic Mapper Data

Multispectral information can best be accessed and evaluated through digital interactive image processing techniques. The potential user community, however, has not reached the level where image processing is being used routinely as a standard tool. Therefore, for the time being, special effort must be put into development of strategies that will guarantee optimal utilization of the spectral information contained in remote sensing data acquired under the varying conditions affecting each scene. The Thematic Mapper system provides spectral information in seven carefully selected spectral bands, covering the visible, near IR, short-wave IR and thermal IR region of the electromagntic spectrum. The challenge is to devise the best approach for presenting this complex spectral information in a pictorial format which can be understood and accepted as a standard by the growing user community.

Mars Observer screen display design for a multimission environment

The Multi Mission Control Team (MMCT) is responsible for support to real time operations of the Mars Observer Mission. The team has the responsibility for monitoring the ground data system for the integrity of the telemetry and command data links. It also supports the Mars Observers Spacecraft Team in monitoring spacecraft events. The Data Monitor and Display subsystem (DMD) workstation provides the data interface with the ground data system. DMD workstation displays were developed to support the Mission Controllers in accomplishing their assigned tasks for supporting the Mars Observer mission. The display design concepts that were used in the Mar Observer MMCT displays to minimize the cognitive demands on the controllers and enhance the MMCT operations were presented. The Data Monitor and Display subsystem (DMD) is the controllers window into the spacecraft and the ground data system. The DMD is a workstation that provides a variety of formatted data displays to the controller. The displays present both spacecraft telemetry data and ground system monitor data. Some displays are preplanned and developed prior to the operations in which they are used. These are called fixed displays and are quite versatile in format and content. Other displays and plots can be created in real time. These displays have limited formats but flexibility in content. These are called list or message displays. They can be rapidly generated by the controller as needed. The MMCT display repertoire provides a mix of displays appropriate to the needs of the MMCT controllers.

Three Dimensional Lightning Launch Commit Criteria Visualization Tool

Lightning occurrence too close to a NASA LSP or future SLS program launch vehicle in flight would have disastrous results. The sensitive electronics on the vehicle could be damaged to the point of causing an anomalous flight path and ultimate destruction of the vehicle and payload.According to 45th Weather Squadron (45 WS) Lightning Launch Commit Criteria (LLCC), a vehicle cannot launch if lightning is within 10 NM of its pre-determined flight path. The 45 WS Launch Weather Officers (LWOs) evaluate this LLCC for their launch customers to ensure the safety of the vehicle in flight. Currently, the LWOs conduct a subjective analysis of the distance between lightning and the flight path using data from different display systems. A 3-D display in which the lightning data and flight path are together would greatly reduce the ambiguity in evaluating this LLCC. It would give the LWOs and launch directors more confidence in whether a GO or NO GO for launch should be issued. When lightning appears close to the path, the LWOs likely err on the side of conservatism and deem the lightning to be within 10 NM. This would cause a costly delay or scrub. If the LWOs can determine with a strong level of certainty that the lightning is beyond 10 NM, launch availability would increase without compromising safety of the vehicle, payload or, in the future, astronauts. The AMU was tasked to conduct a market research of commercial, government, and open source software that might be able to ingest and display the 3-D lightning data from the KSC Lightning Mapping Array (LMA), the 45th Space Wing Weather Surveillance Radar (WSR), the National Weather Service in Melbourne Weather Surveillance Radar 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D), and the vehicle flight path data so that all can be visualized together. To accomplish this, the AMU conducted Internet searches for potential software candidates and interviewed software developers.None of the available off-the-shelf software had a 3-D capability that could display all of the data in a single visualization. The AMU determined there are two viable software packages that could satisfy the 45 WS requirement with further development and recommends the KSC Weather Office follow-up with both organizations to request development costs.

Studies of recognition with multitemporal remote sensor data

Characteristics of multitemporal data and their use in recognition processing were investigated. Principal emphasis was on satellite data collected by the LANDSAT multispectral scanner and on temporal changes throughout a growing season. The effects of spatial misregistration on recognition performance with multitemporal data were examined. A capability to compute probabilities of detection and false alarm was developed and used with simulated distributions for misregistered pixels. Wheat detection was found to be degraded and false alarms increased by misregistration effects. Multitemporal signature characteristics and multitemporal recognition processing were studied to gain insights into problems associated with this approach and possible improvements. Recognition performance with one multitemporal data set displayed marked improvements over results from single-time data.

ISS Radiation Shielding and Acoustic Simulation Using an Immersive Environment

The International Space Station Environment Simulator (ISSES) is a virtual reality application that uses high-performance computing, graphics, and audio rendering to simulate the radiation and acoustic environments of the International Space Station (ISS). This CAVE application allows the user to maneuver to different locations inside or outside of the ISS and interactively compute and display the radiation dose at a point. The directional dose data is displayed as a color-mapped sphere that indicates the relative levels of radiation from all directions about the center of the sphere. The noise environment is rendered in real time over headphones or speakers and includes non-spatial background noise, such as air-handling equipment, and spatial sounds associated with specific equipment racks, such as compressors or fans. Changes can be made to equipment rack locations that produce changes in both the radiation shielding and system noise. The ISSES application allows for interactive investigation and collaborative trade studies between radiation shielding and noise for crew safety and comfort.

An application of the Multi-Purpose System Simulation /MPSS/ model to the Monitor and Control Display System /MACDS/ at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration /NASA/ Goddard Space Flight Center /GSFC/

The Multi-Purpose System Simulator (MPSS) model was used to investigate the current and projected performance of the Monitor and Control Display System (MACDS) at the Goddard Space Flight Center in processing and displaying launch data adequately. MACDS consists of two interconnected mini-computers with associated terminal input and display output equipment and a disk-stored data base. Three configurations of MACDS were evaluated via MPSS and their performances ascertained. First, the current version of MACDS was found inadequate to handle projected launch data loads because of unacceptable data backlogging. Second, the current MACDS hardware with enhanced software was capable of handling two times the anticipated data loads. Third, an up-graded hardware ensemble combined with the enhanced software was capable of handling four times the anticipated data loads.
