Prediction of unsteady aerodynamic loadings caused by trailing edge control surface motions in subsonic compressible flow: Analysis and results

A theoretical analysis and a computer program have been developed for the prediction of unsteady lifting surface loadings caused by motions of trailing edge control surfaces having sealed gaps. The final form of the downwash integral equation has been formulated by isolating the singularities from the non-singular terms and establishing a preferred solution process to remove and evaluate the downwash discontinuities in a systematic manner. Comparisons of theoretical and experimental pressure data are made for several control surface configurations. The comparisons indicate that reasonably accurate theoretical pressure distributions and generalized forces may be obtained for a wide variety of control surface configurations. Spanwise symmetry or antisymmetry of motion, and up to four control surfaces on each half span can be accommodated.

Control Design for an Advanced Geared Turbofan Engine

This paper describes the design process for the control system of an advanced geared turbofan engine. This process is applied to a simulation that is representative of a 30,000 pound-force thrust class concept engine with two main spools, ultra-high bypass ratio, and a variable area fan nozzle. Control system requirements constrain the non-linear engine model as it operates throughout its flight envelope of sea level to 40,000 feet and from 0 to 0.8 Mach. The purpose of this paper is to review the engine control design process for an advanced turbofan engine configuration. The control architecture selected for this project was developed from literature and reflects a configuration that utilizes a proportional integral controller with sets of limiters that enable the engine to operate safely throughout its flight envelope. Simulation results show the overall system meets performance requirements without exceeding operational limits.

Guidance and Control Software Project Data - Volume 4: Configuration Management and Quality Assurance Documents

The Guidance and Control Software (GCS) project was the last in a series of software reliability studies conducted at Langley Research Center between 1977 and 1994. The technical results of the GCS project were recorded after the experiment was completed. Some of the support documentation produced as part of the experiment, however, is serving an unexpected role far beyond its original project context. Some of the software used as part of the GCS project was developed to conform to the RTCA/DO-178B software standard, "Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification," used in the civil aviation industry. That standard requires extensive documentation throughout the software development life cycle, including plans, software requirements, design and source code, verification cases and results, and configuration management and quality control data. The project documentation that includes this information is open for public scrutiny without the legal or safety implications associated with comparable data from an avionics manufacturer. This public availability has afforded an opportunity to use the GCS project documents for DO-178B training. This report provides a brief overview of the GCS project, describes the 4-volume set of documents and the role they are playing in training, and includes configuration management and quality assurance documents from the GCS project. Volume 4 contains six appendices: A. Software Accomplishment Summary for the Guidance and Control Software Project; B. Software Configuration Index for the Guidance and Control Software Project; C. Configuration Management Records for the Guidance and Control Software Project; D. Software Quality Assurance Records for the Guidance and Control Software Project; E. Problem Report for the Pluto Implementation of the Guidance and Control Software Project; and F. Support Documentation Change Reports for the Guidance and Control Software Project.

Comparison of Aerocapture Performance Using Bank Control and Direct Force Control with Two Human-Scale Vehicles at Mars

Recent studies of human-scale missions to Mars have included a wide trade space of vehicle configurations and control schemes. Some configurations fly at a low angle of attack with a low L/D,while others fly at a high angle of attack with a mid L/D. Some use bank angle control, while others use direct force control, where the angle of attack and sideslip angle are independently modulated. This paper compares the performance of three vehicle configurations: a low-L/D vehicle using direct force control, a low-L/D vehicle using bank control, and a mid-L/D vehicle using bank control. The reference mission is aerocapture at Mars into a highly elliptical, 1-sol orbit. The trajectories are integrated in three degrees of freedom. All three cases utilize numeric predictor-corrector guidances and emulate control system responses with rate and acceleration limits. The configurations are compared using a Monte Carlo analysis. The robustness of each configuration to increased dispersions is also compared.

A ram-air-spoiler roll stabilization device for forward control cruciform missiles

An experimental investigation has been made at supersonic Mach numbers to determine the feasibility of using a ram-air-spoiler roll control device on a typical canard control missile configuration. As a basis for roll control comparisons, conventional aileron controls on the tail fins were also tested. Results are presented which indicate that the addition of nacelles on the missile tail fins resulted in satisfactory roll control effectiveness and only small changes in basic missile stability. The ram-air-spoiler roll control effectiveness is relatively constant over the range of vehicle attitudes and Mach numbers investigated.

Control of a Serpentine Robot for Inspection Tasks

This paper presents a simple and robust kinematic control scheme for the JPL serpentine robot system. The proposed strategy is developed using the dampened-least-squares/configuration control methodology, and permits the considerable dexterity of the JPL serpentine robot to be effectively utilized for maneuvering in the congested and uncertain workspaces often encountered in inspection tasks. Computer simulation results are given for the 20 degree-of-freedom (DOF) manipulator system obtained by mounting the twelve DOF serpentine robot at the end-effector of an eight DOF Robotics Research arm/lathe-bed system. These simulations demonstrate that the proposed approach provides an effective method of controlling this complex system.
