Light nuclei with semilocal momentum-space regularized chiral interactions up to third order

In this work, we present a systematic investigation of few-nucleon systems and light nuclei using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration interactions comprising semilocal momentum-space regularized two- and three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order (N 2 LO). Following our earlier study utilizing the coordinate-space regularized interactions, the two low-energy constants entering the three-body force are determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross-section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Predictions are made for selected observables in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reactions, for properties of the A = 3 and A = 4 nuclei, and for spectra of p-shell nuclei up to A = 16. A comprehensive error analysis is performed including an estimation of correlated truncation uncertainties for nuclear spectra. The obtained predictions are generally found to agree with experimental data within errors. Similarly to the coordinate-space regularized chiral interactions at the same order, a systematic overbinding of heavier nuclei is observed, which sets in for A~10 and increases with A.

Analysis of the neutron matter equation of state and the symmetry energy up to fourth order of chiral effective field theory

We present predictions for the neutron matter equation of state, from leading to fourth order of chiral effective field theory, using recently developed, accurate chiral nucleon-nucleon potentials. For the many-body method, we employ the nonperturbative particle-particle ladder approximation, that is, we solve the G-matrix equation. Furthermore, we find the impact of subleading three-neutron forces to be mild and attractive. We also show order-by-order predictions for the symmetry energy, and discuss its density dependence in relation to empirical constraints. For the nuclear matter equation of state, in this work we adopt an empirical parametrization with good saturation properties. This is to highlight, specifically, the energy and pressure in neutron matter, particularly when comparing with empirical constraints.

Comparative study of He 6 β -decay based on different similarity-renormalization-group evolved chiral interactions

We report on a study of the Gamow-Teller matrix element contributing to ${}^6$He $\beta$-decay with similarity renormalization group (SRG) versions of momentum- and configuration-space two-nucleon interactions. These interactions are derived from two different formulations of chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) -- without and with the explicit inclusion of $\Delta$-isobars. We consider evolution parameters $\Lambda_{\rm SRG}$ in the range between 1.2 and 2.0 fm$^{-1}$ and, for the $\Delta$-less case, also the unevolved (bare) interaction. The axial current contains one- and two-body terms, consistently derived at tree level (no loops) in the two distinct $\chi$EFT formulations we have adopted here. The ${}^6$He and ${}^6$Li ground-state wave functions are obtained from hyperspherical-harmonics (HH) solutions of the nuclear many-body problem. In $A\,$=$\,6$ systems, the HH method is limited at present to treat only two-body interactions and non-SRG evolved currents. Our results exhibit a significant dependence on $\Lambda_{\text{SRG}}$ of the contributions associated with two-body currents, suggesting that a consistent SRG-evolution of these is needed in order to obtain reliable estimates. We also show that the contributions from one-pion-exchange currents depend strongly on the model (chiral) interactions and on the momentum- or configuration-space cutoffs used to regularize them. These results might prove helpful in clarifying the origin of the sign difference recently found in No-Core-Shell-Model and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ${}^6$He Gamow-Teller matrix element.

Auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations of magnetic moments of light nuclei with chiral effective field theory interactions

We calculate the magnetic moments of light nuclei $( A < 20 )$ using the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method and local two- and three-nucleon forces with electromagnetic currents from chiral effective field theory. For all nuclei under consideration, we also calculate the ground-state energies and charge radii. We generally find a good agreement with experimental values for all of these observables. For the electromagnetic currents, we explore the impact of employing two different power counting schemes, and study theoretical uncertainties stemming from the truncation of the chiral expansion order by order for select nuclei within these two approaches. In conclusion, we find that it is crucial to employ consistent power counting schemes for interactions and currents to achieve a systematic order-by-order convergence.

Perturbative treatment of nonlocal chiral interactions in auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations

Nuclear many-body systems, ranging from nuclei to neutron stars, are some of the most interesting physical phenomena in our universe, and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) approaches are among the most accurate many-body methods currently available to study them. In recent decades, interactions derived from chiral effective field theory (EFT) have been widely adopted in the study of nuclear many-body systems. One drawback of the QMC approach is the requirement that the nuclear interactions need to be local, whereas chiral EFT interactions usually contain nonlocalities. In this work, we leverage the capability of computing second-order perturbative corrections to the ground-state energy in order to develop a self-consistent approach to including nonlocal operators in QMC calculations. In conclusion, we investigate both the deuteron and the neutron-matter equation of state in order to show the robustness of our technique and pave the way for future QMC calculations at higher orders in the EFT, where nonlocal operators cannot be avoided.

Influence of the chiral magnetic effect on particle-pair elliptic anisotropy

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon in which electric charge is separated by a strong magnetic field from local domains of chirality imbalance in quantum chromodynamics. The CME-sensitive, azimuthal correlator difference Δ⁢𝛾 between opposite-sign (OS) and same-sign (SS) charged hadron pairs is contaminated by a major physics background proportional to the particle elliptic anisotropy (𝑣 2 ). The CME signal, on the other hand, contributes to the difference in the pair elliptic anisotropies between OS and SS pairs (Δ⁢ 𝑣 2,pair ). We investigate Δ⁢ 𝑣 2,pair and find its sensitivity to CME to be similar to that of the Δ⁢𝛾 observable.

Simple theory of chiral fermion dark matter

We propose a theory of chiral fermion dark matter (DM) with an isospin-3/2 fermion of a dark sector SU(2) D gauge symmetry, which is arguably the simplest chiral theory. An isospin-3 scalar breaks SU(2) D down to a discrete non-Abelian group T' and generates the DM mass. The SU(2) D gauge symmetry protects the DM mass and guarantees its stability. We derive consistency conditions for the theory and study its DM phenomenology. In some regions of parameters of the theory a two-component DM scenario is realized, consisting of a fermion and a boson, with the boson being the lightest T' nonsinglet field. In the case of single-component fermionic DM, we find that internal consistency of the theory, perturbativity arguments, and the observed relic abundance limit the DM mass to be less than 280 GeV, except when s-channel resonance regions are open for annihilation. For a significant part of the parameter space, the theory can be tested in DM direct-detection signals at the LZ and XENONnT experiments.

Soft pions and transport near the chiral critical point

During the expansion of a heavy ion collision, the system passes close to the $\textit{O}$(4) critical point of QCD, and thus the fluctuations of the order parameter $(σ, \overrightarrow{π}$) are expected to be enhanced. In this work, our goal is to compute how these enhanced fluctuations modify the transport coefficients of QCD near the pseudocritical point. We also make a phenomenological estimate for how chiral fluctuations could effect the momentum spectrum of soft pions. We first formulate the appropriate stochastic hydrodynamic equations close to the $\textit{O}$(4) critical point. Then, working in mean field, we determine the correlation functions of the stress tensor and the currents which result from this stochastic real-time theory, and use these correlation functions to determine the scaling behavior of the transport coefficients. The hydrodynamic theory also describes the propagation of pion waves, fixing the scaling behavior of the dispersion curve of soft pions. We present scaling functions for the shear viscosity and the charge conductivities near the pseudocritical point and estimate the absolute magnitude of the critical fluctuations to these parameters and the bulk viscosity. Using the calculated pion dispersion curve, we estimate the expected critical enhancement of soft pion yields, and this estimate provides a plausible explanation for the excess seen in experiment relative to ordinary hydrodynamic computations. Our results motivate further phenomenological and numerical work on the implications of chiral symmetry on real-time properties of thermal QCD near the pseudocritical point.

Impact of the chiral asymmetry and a magnetic field on the passage of an energetic test parton in a QCD medium

We study the dependence of soft contribution to the energy loss of a test parton moving with a high velocity on the chiral imbalance and magnetic field in the QCD medium. A semiclassical approach is adopted to estimate the parton energy loss that takes into account the back-reaction on the parton due to the polarization effects of the QCD medium while traversing through the medium. We find that the motion of the parton is sensitive to the chiral asymmetry in the medium. Further, we investigate the effect of magnetic field-induced anisotropy on the energy transfer between the moving parton and the medium. Our results show that the energy loss of the parton is strongly influenced by the strength of the magnetic field as well as the relative orientation of the motion of the parton and the direction of the magnetic field in the medium.

Conserved currents in five-dimensional proposals for lattice chiral gauge theories

We apply the Grabowska-Kaplan framework, originally proposed for lattice chiral gauge theories, to QCD. We show that the resulting theory contains a conserved and gauge invariant singlet axial current, both on the lattice and in the continuum limit. This must give rise to a difference with QCD, with the simplest possibility being a superfluous Nambu-Goldstone boson in the physical spectrum not present in QCD. We find a similar unwanted conserved current in the recent “disk” formalism, this time limiting ourselves to the continuum formulation. A similar problem is expected when either of these formalisms is used for its original goal of constructing lattice chiral gauge theories. Finally we discuss a conjecture about the possible dynamics that might be associated with the unwanted conserved current and the fate of ‘t Hooft vertices. Chiral properties of the nucleon interpolating current and θ-dependent observables

We revisit the chiral properties of nucleon interpolating currents, and show that of the two leading order currents j 1 and j 2 , only two linear combinations j 1 ± j 2 transform covariantly under the anomalous U⁢(1) A symmetry. As a result, calculations of quantities which vanish by symmetry in the chiral limit may produce unphysical results if carried out with different linear combinations of the currents. This includes observables such as electric dipole moments, induced by the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) parameter θ, and the θ-dependence of the nucleon mass. For completeness, we also exhibit the leading order results for nucleon electric dipole moments (d n,p ) induced by θ, and the nucleon magnetic moments (μ n,p ), when calculated using QCD sum rules for both the covariant choices of the nucleon interpolating current. The results in each channel, conveniently expressed as the ratios, d n,p /μ n,p , are numerically consistent, and reflect the required physical dependence on θ.

Nonlocal chiral anomaly and generalized parton distributions

We discuss the nonlocal generalization of the QCD chiral anomaly along the light cone and derive relations between twist-two, twist-three, and twist-four generalized parton distributions (GPDs) mediated by the anomaly. We further establish the connection to the “anomaly pole” in the GPD E ˜ recently identified in the perturbative calculation of the Compton scattering amplitudes, and demonstrate its cancellation at the GPD level. Our work helps elucidate the previously unexplored connection between GPDs, the chiral anomaly, and the mass generation of the η ′ meson. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Interacting mesons as degrees of freedom in a chiral model

Here, we study the equation of state of hot and dense hadronic matter using an extended chiral mean field (CMF) model framework where the addition is the inclusion of interactions of thermally excited mesons. This is implemented by calculating the in-medium masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, obtained through the explicit chiral symmetry-breaking and vector-interaction terms in the Lagrangian, respectively, prior to applying the mean-field approximation. As a result, the in-medium meson contributions generate a feedback term to the CMF’s equations of motion, which then modifies the equation of state. With this improvement, we quantify the effect on the equation of state of strongly interacting matter through comparisons with state-of-the-art lattice QCD results and other hadronic models like the hadron resonance gas model. We find that the results of the updated hadronic CMF model with an improved meson description (mCMF) provide a better agreement with lattice-QCD data for thermodynamic state variables across a wide range of temperatures and baryon chemical potentials.

Chiral Magnetism and High-Temperature Skyrmions in B20-Ordered Co-Si

Magnets with chiral crystal structures and helical spin structures have recently attracted much attention as potential spin-electronics materials, but their relatively low magnetic-ordering temperatures are a disadvantage. While cobalt has long been recognized as an element that promotes high-temperature magnetic ordering, most Co-rich alloys are achiral and exhibit collinear rather than helimagnetic order. Crystallographically, the B20-ordered compound CoSi is an exception due to its chiral structure, but it does not exhibit any kind of magnetic order. Here, we use nonequilibrium processing to produce B20-ordered Co 1+ x Si 1₋ x with a maximum Co solubility of x = 0.043. Above a critical excess-Co content x c = 0.028 ), the alloys are magnetically ordered, and for x = 0.043, a critical temperature $T_c$ = 328 K is obtained, the highest among all B20-type magnets. The crystal structure of the alloy supports spin spirals caused by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and from magnetic measurements we estimate that the spirals have a periodicity of about 17 nm. In this work, our density-functional calculations explain the combination of high magnetic-ordering temperature and short periodicity in terms of a quantum phase transition where excess-cobalt spins are coupled through the host matrix.

Spin Polarizations in a Covariant Angular-Momentum-Conserved Chiral Transport Model

Using a covariant and angular-momentum-conserved chiral transport model, which takes into account the spin-orbit interactions of chiral fermions in their scatterings via the side jumps, we study the quark spin polarization in quark matter. For a system of rotating and unpolarized massless quarks in an expanding box, we find that side jumps can dynamically polarize the quark spin and result in a final quark spin polarization consistent with that of thermally equilibrated massless quarks in a self-consistent vorticity field. Further, for the quark matter produced in noncentral relativistic heavy ion collisions, we find that in the medium rest frame both the quark local spin polarizations in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane and along the longitudinal beam direction show an azimuthal angle dependence in the transverse plane similar to those observed in experiments for the Lambda hyperon.

Noncollinear Ground State from a Four-Spin Chiral Exchange in a Tetrahedral Magnet

We propose a quartic chiral term m x m y m z ∇ • m for the energy density of a cubic ferromagnet with broken parity symmetry (point group T d ). We demonstrate that this interaction causes a phase transition from a collinear ferromagnetic state to a noncollinear magnetic cone ground state provided its strength exceeds the geometric mean of magnetic exchange and cubic anisotropy. The corresponding noncollinear ground state may also be additionally stabilized by an external magnetic field pointing along certain crystallographic directions. Here, the four-spin chiral exchange does also manifest itself in peculiar magnon spectra and favors spin waves with the wave vector that is perpendicular to the average magnetization direction.

Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect via Charge-Dependent Azimuthal Correlations Relative to Spectator and Participant Planes in Au + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen with a significance of 1–3 standard deviations in mid-central (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Furthermore, significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

Topological Circular Dichroism in Chiral Multifold Semimetals

Uncovering the physical contents of the nontrivial topology of quantum states is a critical problem in condensed matter physics. Here, we study the topological circular dichroism in chiral semimetals using linear response theory and first-principles calculations. We show that, when the low-energy spectrum respects emergent SO(3) rotational symmetry, topological circular dichroism is forbidden for Weyl fermions, and thus is unique to chiral multifold fermions. This is a result of the selection rule that is imposed by the emergent symmetry under the combination of particle-hole conjugation and spatial inversion. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that topological circular dichroism occurs in CoSi for photon energy below about 0.2 eV. In conclusion, our Letter demonstrates the existence of a response property of unconventional fermions that is fundamentally different from the response of Dirac and Weyl fermions, motivating further study to uncover other unique responses.
