Gravitational wave signatures of a chiral fermion dark matter model

Abstract Theories in which the dark matter (DM) candidate is a fermion transforming chirally under a gauge symmetry are attractive, as the gauge symmetry would protect the DM mass. In such theories, the universe would have undergone a phase transition at early times that generated the DM mass upon spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry. In this paper, we explore the gravitational wave signals of a simple such theory based on an SU(2) D dark sector with a dark isospin-3/2 fermion serving as the DM candidate. This is arguably the simplest chiral theory possible. The scalar sector consists of a dark isospin-3 multiple, which breaks the SU(2) D gauge symmetry and also generates the DM mass. We construct the full thermal potential of the model and identify regions of parameter space which lead to detectable gravitational wave signals, arising from a strong first-order SU(2) D phase transition, in various planned space-based interferometers, while also being consistent with dark matter relic abundance. The bulk of the parameter space exhibiting detectable gravitational wave signals in the model also has large WIMP-nucleon scattering cross sections, ℴSI, which could be probed in upcoming direct detection experiments.

Observation of Chiral Magnon Band Splitting in Altermagnetic Hematite

Altermagnets, a new frontier for spintronics, represent a distinct magnet class with nonrelativisticsplitting of both electronic and chiral magnon bands, yet experimental verification of their unique magnondynamics remains scarce. In this Letter, inelastic neutron scattering experiments on α-Fe 2 O 3 reveal a clearmagnon band splitting about 3 meV at ∼100 meV. Here, we trace the origin of this splitting to the alternatingexchange interactions between the 13th nearest neighbors, as supported by first-principles calculations, andconfirm that the magnons have chiral splits by theoretical modeling. This definitive characterization ofchiral magnons in hematite provides the fundamental insight needed to design and control spin transport innovel spintronic applications.

Chiral spin liquid and quantum phase transition in the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model

Recent advances in moiré engineering motivate the study of lattice models of strongly correlated electrons subjected to substantial orbital magnetic flux. We analyze the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette and a density of one electron per site, where a chiral spin liquid phase may exist between weak-coupling integer quantum Hall and strong-coupling 120° antiferromagnetic phases. Here, we use matrix product state methods and analytical arguments to investigate this model compactified to cylinders of finite circumference. We uncover a glide particle-hole symmetry operation which, we argue, is spontaneously broken at the quantum Hall to spin liquid transition on odd-circumference cylinders. We numerically verify the spontaneous symmetry breaking and further demonstrate that this transition is associated with algebraic long-range correlations of various spin-singlet, charge-neutral operators. For even-circumference cylinders, the transition becomes a crossover associated with a large correlation length that grows substantially with circumference. Our findings suggest that in the two-dimensional limit, the transition to a chiral spin liquid phase is continuous and features critical fluctuations of the current.

Investigating event-shape methods in the search for the chiral magnetic effect in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon in which electric charge is separated by a strong magnetic field from local domains of chirality imbalance and parity violation in quantum chromodynamics. The CME-sensitive observable, the charge-dependent three-point azimuthal correlator Δ⁢𝛾 , is contaminated by a major physics background proportional to the particle's elliptic flow anisotropy 𝑣 2 . Event-shape engineering (ESE) binning events in dynamical fluctuations of 𝑣 2 and event-shape selection (ESS) binning events in statistical fluctuations of 𝑣 2 are two methods to search for the CME by projecting Δ⁢𝛾 to the measured anisotropy 𝑣 2 = 0 intercept. Here, we conduct a systematic study of these two methods using physics models as well as toy model simulations. It is observed that the ESE method fulfills the general premise of measuring the CME but is statistically hungry. It is found that the intercept from the ESS method depends on the details of the event content, such as the mixtures of background-contributing sources, because of statistical fluctuations of intertwining variables used in the method, and is thus not practically useful to measure the CME.

The X17 with Chiral Couplings

In recent years, the ATOMKI collaboration has performed a series of measurements of excited nuclei, observing a resonant excess of electron-positron pairs at large opening angles compared to the Standard Model prediction. The excess has been hypothesized to be due to the production of a new spin-1 or spin-0 particle, X17, with a mass of about 17 MeV. Recently, the PADME experiment has reported an excess in the $e^+e^-$ cross section at center-of-mass energies near 17 MeV, perhaps further hinting at the existence of a new state. Studies of the spin-1 case have hitherto focused on either vector {\em or} axial-vector couplings to quarks and leptons, whereas UV theories more naturally produce {\em both} vector and axial-vector (\textit{i.e.} chiral) couplings, analogous to the Standard Model weak interactions. We consider the ATOMKI anomalies in the context of an $X$ with chiral couplings to quarks and explore the parameter space that can explain the ATOMKI anomalies, contrasting them with experimental constraints. We find that it is possible to accommodate the reported ATOMKI signals. However, the $99\%$ CL region is in tension with null results from searches for atomic parity violation and direct searches for new low mass physics coupled to electrons. This tension is found to be driven by the magnitude of the reported excess in the transition of $^{12}{\rm C}(17.23)$, which drives the best-fit region towards excluded couplings.

Chiral anomalies and Wilson fermions

The Wilson formulation of fermions in lattice gauge theory provides a unified description of the chiral anomalies in the standard model. The discrete Dirac operator diagonalizes into a series of 2 × 2 blocks. In each block the possible eigenvalues either form a complex pair or separate into two real eigenvalues that have specific chirality. The collision of these pairs of eigenvalues occurs outside the perturbative region and provides a path between topological sectors.

In-plane Néel wall chirality and orientation of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector in magnetic films

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is of great interest as it can stabilize chiral spin structures in thin films. Experiments verifying the orientation of the interfacial DMI vector remain rare, in part due to the difficulty of separating vector components of DMI. In this study, Fe/Ni bilayers and Co/Ni multilayers were deposited epitaxially onto Cu(001) and Pt(111) substrates, respectively. By tailoring the effective anisotropy, spin reorientation transitions (SRTs) are employed to probe the orientation of the DMI vector by measuring the spin structure of domain walls on both sides of the SRTs. In our results, the interfacial DMI is found to be sufficiently strong to stabilize chiral Néel walls in the out-of-plane magnetized regimes, while achiral Néel walls are observed in the in-plane magnetized regimes. Furthermore, these findings experimentally confirm that the out-of-plane component of the DMI vector is insignificant in these fcc(001) and fcc(111) oriented interfaces, even in the presence of atomic steps.

Absolute crystal and magnetic chiralities in the langasite compound Ba 3 NbFe 3 Si 2 O 14 determined by polarized neutron and x-ray scattering

Here, we present a combined polarized neutron and x-ray scattering study on two enantiopure langasite single crystals aimed at the determination of their absolute structural and magnetic chiralities and the coupling between them. Our respective data sets unambiguously reveal two samples of opposite structural chirality, where the magnetic handedness is pinned by the structural one. Simple energy considerations of the magnetic exchange and single-ion anisotropy parameters reveal that it is not the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction but the local single-ion anisotropy on a triangular plaquette which plays a key role in stabilizing one of the two magnetic helices.

Chiral topologically ordered insulating phases in arrays of interacting integer quantum Hall islands

Here, we study networks of Coulomb-blockaded integer quantum Hall islands with even fillings ν = 2 k ( k being an integer), including cases with 2 k layers each of ν = 1 fillings. Allowing only spin-current interactions between the islands (i.e., without any charge transfer), we obtain solvable models leading to a rich set of insulating S U ( 2 ) k topologically ordered phases. The case with k = 1 is dual to the Kalmeyer-Laughlin phase, k = 2 to Kitaev's chiral spin liquid and the Moore-Read state, and k = 3 contains a Fibonacci anyon that may be utilized for universal topological quantum computation. Additionally, we show how the S U ( 2 ) k topological phases may be obtained also in an array of islands with ν = 2 k integer quantum Hall states and critical spin chains in a checkerboard pattern. The array and checkerboard constructions gap out the charge mode and additional “flavor” modes by virtue of their geometry. Furthermore, we find that a fine tuning of the system parameter is not needed in the checkerboard configuration and the ν = 2 case. We also discuss their bulk excitations, and show that their thermal Hall conductance is universal, reflecting the central charge c = 3 k / ( k + 2 ) of the chiral edge modes.

Observation of a chiral wave function in the twofold-degenerate quadruple Weyl system BaPtGe

Topological states in quantum materials are defined by bulk wave functions that possess nontrivial topological invariants. While edge modes are widely presented as signatures of nontrivial topology, how bulk wave functions can manifest explicitly topological properties remains unresolved. Here, using high-resolution inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (IXS) combined with first principles calculations, we report experimental signatures of chiral wave functions in the bulk phonon spectrum of BaPtGe, which we show to host a previously undiscovered twofold-degenerate quadruple Weyl node. The chirality of the degenerate phononic wave function yields a nontrivial phonon dynamical structure factor, S(Q,ω), along high-symmetry directions, that is in excellent agreement with numerical and model calculations. Furthermore, our results establish IXS as a powerful tool to uncover topological wave functions, providing a key missing ingredient in the study of topological quantum matter.

Current-induced dynamics and tunable spectra of a magnetic chiral bobber

Chiral bobber (ChB) is an exotic three-dimensional topological texture in chiral magnets. It is composed of a Bloch-point singularity and a skyrmion tube; the incommensurate characteristic length scales of these two components would thus lead to novel dynamics of a ChB. In this work, we report the current-induced motion and the accompanying Hall effect of a ChB. Surprisingly, we find that the Hall angle of a ChB can be tuned in a wide range from -90 ° to positive angles. A further study of spin-wave excitations identified high-frequency resonant modes, which are related to the velocity of ChB and lattice constants. The excited frequency can be two orders of magnitude higher than that of skyrmions. The broad ranges of Hall angles and frequency spectra could boost the development of spintronic devices using topological textures.

Exact quantum scars in the chiral nonlinear Luttinger liquid

While the chiral linear Luttinger liquid is integrable via bosonization, its nonlinear counterpart does not admit for an analytic solution. In this work, we find a subextensive number of exact eigenstates for a large family of density-density interaction terms. These states are embedded in a continuum of strongly correlated excited states. The real-space entanglement entropy of some exact states scales logarithmically with system size while that of others has volume-law scaling. We introduce momentum-space entanglement as an unambiguous differentiator between these exact states and the remaining excited states. With regard to momentum space, the exact states behave as bona fide quantum many-body scars: they exhibit identically zero momentum-space entanglement, while typical eigenstates behave thermally. We corroborate this finding by a level statistics analysis. Here we detail the general formalism for systematically finding all interaction terms and associated exact states, and present a number of infinite exact state sequences extending to arbitrarily high energies. Unlike many previous examples of quantum many-body scars, the exact states uncovered here do not lie at equidistant energies and do not follow from a special operator algebra. Instead, they are uniquely enabled by the interplay of Fermi statistics and chirality.

Quantum spin liquid with emergent chiral order in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model

The interplay between spin frustration and charge fluctuation gives rise to an exotic quantum state in the intermediate-interaction regime of the half-filled triangular-lattice Hubbard model, while the nature of the state is under debate. Using the density matrix renormalization group with SU(2) spin ⓍU(1) charge symmetries implemented, we study the triangular-lattice Hubbard model defined on the long cylinder geometry up to circumference W=6. A gapped quantum spin liquid, with on-site interaction 9≲U/t≲10.75, is identified between the metallic and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases. In particular, we find that this spin liquid develops a robust long-range spin scalar-chiral correlation as the system length L increases, which unambiguously unveils the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum supports symmetry fractionalization and spinon edge modes in the obtained ground state. The possible origin of chiral order in this intermediate spin liquid and its relation to the rotonlike excitations have also been discussed.

Absence of quantization in the circular photogalvanic effect in disordered chiral Weyl semimetals

The circularly polarized photogalvanic effect (CPGE) is studied in chiral Weyl semimetals with short-range quenched disorder. Without disorder, the topological properties of chiral Weyl semimetals lead to quantization of the CPGE, which is a second-order optical response. Furthermore, using a combination of diagrammatic perturbation theory in the continuum and exact numerical calculations via the kernel polynomial method on a lattice model, we show that disorder perturbatively destabilizes the quantization of the CPGE.

Proton pairing in neutron stars from chiral effective field theory

Here, we study the 1 S 0 proton pairing gap in beta-equilibrated neutron star matter within the framework of chiral effective field theory. We focus on the role of three-body forces, which strongly modify the effective proton-proton spin-singlet interaction in dense matter. We find that three-body forces generically reduce both the size of the pairing gap and the maximum density at which proton pairing may occur. The pairing gap is computed within BCS theory using a single-particle dispersion relation calculated up to second order in perturbation theory. Model uncertainties are estimated by varying the nuclear potential (its order in the chiral expansion and high-momentum cutoff) and the choice of single-particle spectrum in the gap equation. We find that a second-order perturbative treatment of the single-particle spectrum suppresses the proton 1 S 0 pairing gap relative to the use of a free spectrum. We estimate the critical temperature for the onset of proton superconductivity to be T c = (3:2–5:1) 10 9 K, which is consistent with previous theoretical results in the literature and marginally within the range deduced from a recent Bayesian analysis of neutron star cooling observations.

Light nuclei with semilocal momentum-space regularized chiral interactions up to third order

In this work, we present a systematic investigation of few-nucleon systems and light nuclei using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration interactions comprising semilocal momentum-space regularized two- and three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order (N 2 LO). Following our earlier study utilizing the coordinate-space regularized interactions, the two low-energy constants entering the three-body force are determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross-section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Predictions are made for selected observables in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reactions, for properties of the A = 3 and A = 4 nuclei, and for spectra of p-shell nuclei up to A = 16. A comprehensive error analysis is performed including an estimation of correlated truncation uncertainties for nuclear spectra. The obtained predictions are generally found to agree with experimental data within errors. Similarly to the coordinate-space regularized chiral interactions at the same order, a systematic overbinding of heavier nuclei is observed, which sets in for A~10 and increases with A.

Analysis of the neutron matter equation of state and the symmetry energy up to fourth order of chiral effective field theory

We present predictions for the neutron matter equation of state, from leading to fourth order of chiral effective field theory, using recently developed, accurate chiral nucleon-nucleon potentials. For the many-body method, we employ the nonperturbative particle-particle ladder approximation, that is, we solve the G-matrix equation. Furthermore, we find the impact of subleading three-neutron forces to be mild and attractive. We also show order-by-order predictions for the symmetry energy, and discuss its density dependence in relation to empirical constraints. For the nuclear matter equation of state, in this work we adopt an empirical parametrization with good saturation properties. This is to highlight, specifically, the energy and pressure in neutron matter, particularly when comparing with empirical constraints.

Comparative study of He 6 β -decay based on different similarity-renormalization-group evolved chiral interactions

We report on a study of the Gamow-Teller matrix element contributing to ${}^6$He $\beta$-decay with similarity renormalization group (SRG) versions of momentum- and configuration-space two-nucleon interactions. These interactions are derived from two different formulations of chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) -- without and with the explicit inclusion of $\Delta$-isobars. We consider evolution parameters $\Lambda_{\rm SRG}$ in the range between 1.2 and 2.0 fm$^{-1}$ and, for the $\Delta$-less case, also the unevolved (bare) interaction. The axial current contains one- and two-body terms, consistently derived at tree level (no loops) in the two distinct $\chi$EFT formulations we have adopted here. The ${}^6$He and ${}^6$Li ground-state wave functions are obtained from hyperspherical-harmonics (HH) solutions of the nuclear many-body problem. In $A\,$=$\,6$ systems, the HH method is limited at present to treat only two-body interactions and non-SRG evolved currents. Our results exhibit a significant dependence on $\Lambda_{\text{SRG}}$ of the contributions associated with two-body currents, suggesting that a consistent SRG-evolution of these is needed in order to obtain reliable estimates. We also show that the contributions from one-pion-exchange currents depend strongly on the model (chiral) interactions and on the momentum- or configuration-space cutoffs used to regularize them. These results might prove helpful in clarifying the origin of the sign difference recently found in No-Core-Shell-Model and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ${}^6$He Gamow-Teller matrix element.
