Evaluation of LANDSAT-D Orbit Determination Using a Filter/Smoother (PREFER)

Simulated range and range rate data for five tracking stations were first generated using batch least squares orbit determination (GTDS). Then GTDS was used (in the differential correction mode) to produce a nominal trajectory which was input to PREFER. The GTDS differential correction (DC) run was made using models which differed from those used to produce the simulated data. These model differences were chosen to be fairly realistic approximations to the errors in the models actually used for operational orbit determination. Several different simulation runs were made with different types of model errors in order to determine the sensitivity to these errors. The nominal trajectory and the simulated measurement data were input to PREFER to produce a smoothed ephemeris file. Numerous runs of PREFER were made in which parameters describing the statistics of the model errors were varied. The likelihood function computed by the Kalman filter determined the ""best'' choice of input parameters. There was strong negative correlation between the likelihood function and the errors in the smoothed ephemeris.

A function space approach to state and model error estimation for elliptic systems

An approach is advanced for the concurrent estimation of the state and of the model errors of a system described by elliptic equations. The estimates are obtained by a deterministic least-squares approach that seeks to minimize a quadratic functional of the model errors, or equivalently, to find the vector of smallest norm subject to linear constraints in a suitably defined function space. The minimum norm solution can be obtained by solving either a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind for the case with continuously distributed data or a related matrix equation for the problem with discretely located measurements. Solution of either one of these equations is obtained in a batch-processing mode in which all of the data is processed simultaneously or, in certain restricted geometries, in a spatially scanning mode in which the data is processed recursively. After the methods for computation of the optimal estimates are developed, an analysis of the second-order statistics of the estimates and of the corresponding estimation error is conducted. Based on this analysis, explicit expressions for the mean-square estimation error associated with both the state and model error estimates are then developed.

Material characterization and specification development for 350 F curing epoxy-graphite materials

New analytical techniques and a processability laminate have been used in the development of a material specification for 350 F curing epoxy-graphite materials. The development of the specification required the evaluation of prepregs which had variations in their processing behavior that were detected only in production. Chemical techniques were used to analyze the prepregs and establish limits on the concentrations of the various chemical constituents. A batch acceptance test laminate was designed to determine suitability of prepregs for production useage. The new specification requires that the processability laminate be ultrasonically and micrographically inspected for voids and porosity. Incorporation of these and other requirements will help to insure material consistency and processability.

Cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol films as alkaline battery separators

Cross-linking methods have been investigated to determine their effect on the performance of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films as alkaline battery separators. The following types of cross-linked PVA films are discussed: (1) PVA-dialdehyde blends post-treated with an acid or acid periodate solution (two-step method) and (2) PVA-dialdehyde blends cross-linked during film formation (drying) by using a reagent with both aldehyde and acid functionality (one-step method). Laboratory samples of each cross-linked type of film were prepared and evaluated in standard separator screening tests. Then pilot-plant batches of films were prepared and compared to measure differences due to the cross-linking method. The pilot-plant materials were then tested in nickel oxide-zinc cells to compare the two methods with respect to performance characteristics and cycle life. Cell test results are compared with those from tests with Celgard.

A noninteractive procedure for land-use determination

A complete operational procedure designed for use by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the determination of land-use information for hydrologic planning purposes is reported. The procedure combines photo interpretation techniques and the batch-mode computer analysis of Landsat digital data. Since the operational constraints preclude the use of dedicated, interactive image processing facilities, several novel approaches to geometric correction, classification, and data input/output were developed. The procedure is summarized, and examples of the application of the procedure to urban watersheds are described. In spite of the constraints, the procedure provides results comparable in accuracy and lower in cost than those provided by commercial services using interactive techniques.

Injection molding ceramics to high green densities

The injection molding behavior of a concentrated suspension of Si powder in wax was studied. It was found that the injection molding behavior was a function of the processing techniques used to generate the powder. Dry ball-milled powders had the best molding behavior, while air classified and impact-milled powders demonstrated poorer injection moldability. The relative viscosity of these molding batches was studied as a function of powder properties: distribution shape, surface area, packing density, and particle morphology. The experimental behavior, in all cases, followed existing theories. The relative viscosity of an injection molding composition composed of dry ball-milled powders could be expressed using Farris' relation.

Aerodynamic coefficient identification package dynamic data accuracy determinations: Lessons learned

The errors in the dynamic data output from the Aerodynamic Coefficient Identification Packages (ACIP) flown on Shuttle flights 1, 3, 4, and 5 were determined using the output from the Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). A weighted least-squares batch algorithm was empolyed. Using an averaging technique, signal detection was enhanced; this allowed improved calibration solutions. Global errors as large as 0.04 deg/sec for the ACIP gyros, 30 mg for linear accelerometers, and 0.5 deg/sec squared in the angular accelerometer channels were detected and removed with a combination is bias, scale factor, misalignment, and g-sensitive calibration constants. No attempt was made to minimize local ACIP dynamic data deviations representing sensed high-frequency vibration or instrument noise. Resulting 1sigma calibrated ACIP global accuracies were within 0.003 eg/sec, 1.0 mg, and 0.05 deg/sec squared for the gyros, linear accelerometers, and angular accelerometers, respectively.

STS-8 bet results

The final Best Estimate Trajectory (BET) products, i.e., the reconstructed trajectory, the Extended BET, AEROBET and MMLE input files, generated for the eighth NASA Space Shuttle flight are documented. The reconstructed trajectory (inertial BET) for this Challenger flight, the first night landing is discussed. State (position, velocity, and attitude) plus three accelerometer scale factors were determined from fitting the Guam S-band data, seven C-band passes, and pseudo Doppler and altimeter during rollout on Runway 22. The anchor epoch utilized for the batch weighted-least-squares determination was Sept. 5, 1983 7h1m50s.0 (25310 GMT seconds). The spacecraft altitude at epoch is approx. 617 kft. IMU2 data were selected for the reconstruction.

STABCAR: A program for finding characteristic root systems having transcendental stability matrices

STABCAR can be used to determine the characteristic roots of flexible, actively controlled aircraft, including the effects of unsteady aerodynamics. A modal formulation and a transfer-matrix representation of the control system are employed. Operable in either a batch or an interactive mode, STABCAR can provide graphical or tabular output of the variation of the roots with velocity, density, altitude, dynamic pressure or feedback gains. Herein the mathematical model, program structure, input requirements, output capabilities, and a series of sample cases are detailed. STABCAR was written for use on CDC CYBER 175 equipment; modification would be required for operation on other machines.

The magma budget of Volcan Arenal, Costa Rica from 1968 to 1980

The magma volume emitted by Volcan Arenal, Costa Rica, has been calculated to be 304 x 10 to the 6th cu m. A near-continuous rise from very deep within the crust is proposed as an explanation for Arenal's magma supply, and the long-term seismic pattern is interpreted as individual batches of magma using previously fractured pathways. During a break in activity (1973) the effusion site moved from Crater A to Crater C, approximately 400 m higher. It is maintained that the steady downward tilting of the volcano's summit was caused by the loading of the volcano's western side by about 19 x 10 to the 6th cu m of lava. Also noted is the abrupt decrease in effusion rate compatible with the increased magmatic head needed to reach Crater C. It is concluded that the constancy of magma composition and effusion rate from 1974 to 1980 indicates a homogeneous magma reservoir.

Definitive orbit determination for the HEAO-2 spacecraft

Precise ephemerides for the High Energy Astronomy Observatory-2 (HEAO-2) were computed to assist in the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory development of an onboard orbit determination technique. Weighted least-squares, batch orbit solutions were calculated using a high-precision earth gravity model and an approximate model for intermittent spacecraft thrusting. With these improvements, orbit solution consistencies at the 50- to 100-meter level were attained using the Goddard Trajectory Determination System and NASA S-band tracking data.
