Nonthermal metabolic response of rats to He-O2, N2-O2, and Ar-O2 at 1 atm.

Experiments were performed to describe qualitatively and quantitatively the nonthermal metabolic response of rats to normoxic mixtures of helium, nitrogen, or argon at 1 atm ambient pressure. Hypoxic mixtures were similarly tested to determine any differences in hypoxic response as a function of the diluent gas. Rats exposed to argon for 5 days had a reduced metabolic rate relative to nitrogen, as evidenced by oxygen and food consumption, CO2 production, and the catabolism of radiosubstrates. While some parameters indicated that helium increased metabolic rate, oxygen consumption did not significantly differ from that in nitrogen. The physiologic and metabolic response to an imposed hypoxia varied among the different environments. Certain indices suggested that the hypoxic effects were less severe in helium and more pronounced in argon than in nitrogen. The mechanisms by which the diluent gases produced the observed changes could not be identified, but some possibilities are discussed.

Titanium spallation cross sections between 30 and 584 MeV and Ar-39 activities on the moon

The production cross sections of Ar39 for Ti spallation at 45-, 319-, 433-, and 584-MeV proton energies were measured to be 0.37 + or - 0.09, 12.4 + or - 3.7, 9.1 + or - 2.7, and 17.8 + or - 6.2 mb, respectively. Normalized Ar39 production rates and activities are also derived for protons above 40 MeV and for three differential proton spectra of the type approximately E(- alpha). It is concluded that, even for samples of high-Ti content, Ti spallation by solar protons below 200-MeV energy does not contribute significantly to their Ar39 radioactivity.

Multiplet effects on the L(2,3) fluorescence yield of multiply ionized Ar

The 2p fluorescence yield of argon in the presence of 0 to 6 3p holes was calculated by statistically averaging the fluorescence yields of initial state that consist of individual multiplet configurations. These configurations were formed by coupling the 2p vacancy to the partially filled 3p shell. Results agree reasonably well with experimental fluorescence yields deduced from ion-atom collision measurements.

Microbial exchange experiment AR-002

Operational aspects associated with the experiment and the activities of medically important microorganisms recovered from the Apollo crewmen are evaluated. A variety of potential pathogens was recovered from each of the prime and backup crew members before and after flight. However, no disease events were reported. Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus were shown to be transferred from one crewmember to another during the flight. No other medically significant changes in the microbial population were observed.

Absolute rate constants for O + NO + M /= He, Ne, Ar, Kr/ yields NO2 + M from 217-500 K

Rate constants for the reaction O + NO + M yields NO2 + M have been obtained at temperatures from 217-500 K in four different rare gases by a method combining flash photolysis with time resolved detection of O(3-P) by resonance fluorescence. The measured rate constants in Arrhenius form are (10.8 plus or minus 1.2) x 10 to the -33rd exp(1040 plus or minus 60/1.987 T) for helium; (9.01 plus or minus 1.16) x 10 to the -33rd exp(1180 plus or minus 70/1.987 T) for argon; (9.33 plus or minus 1.10) x 10 to the -33rd exp(1030 plus or minus 60/1.987 T) for neon; and (9.52 plus or minus 1.10) x 10 to the -33rd exp(1140 plus or minus 70/1.987 T) for krypton in units of cm to the 6th/sq molecule/s.

Properties of small Ar sub N-1 K/+/ ionic clusters

A self-consistent formalism is developed that, based upon a many-body potential, dynamically determines the thermodynamic properties of ionic clusters without an a priori designation of the equilibrium structures. Aggregates consisting of a single closed shell K(+) ion and N-1 isoelectronic argon atoms were studied. The clusters form crystallites at low temperatures, and melting transitions and spontaneous dissociations are indicated. The results confirm experimental evidence that shows that ionic clusters become less stable with increasing N. The crystallite structures formed by four different clusters are isosceles triangle, skewed form, octahedron with ion in the middle, and icosahedron with the ion in the middle.

Total body calcium analysis using the Ca-12(n, alpha) Ar-37 reaction

A low dose neutron activation technique was developed to measure total body calcium in vivo. The effort had included development of irradiation and processing facilities and conduction of human studies to determine the accuracy and precision of measurement attainable with the systems.

Studies and testing of antireflective (AR) coatings for soda-lime glass

Processes for producing antireflection films on glass are concentrated in three areas: acid etching of glass, plasma etching of glass, and acid development of sodium silicate films on glass. The best transmission was achieved through the acid etching technique, while the most durable films were produced from development of sodium silicate films. Control of the acid etching technique is presently inadequate for production implementation. While films having excellent antireflective properties were fabricated by plasma etching techniques, all were water soluble.
