The abundance and relative volatility of refractory trace elements in Allende Ca,Al-rich inclusions - Implications for chemical and physical processes in the solar nebula

The relative volatilities of lithophile refractory trace elements (LRTE) were determined using calculated 50-percent condensation temperatures. Then, the refractory trace-element abundances were measured in about 100 Allende inclusions. The abundance patterns found in Allende Ca,Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) and ultrarefractory inclusions were used to empirically modify the calculated LRTE volatility sequence. In addition, the importance of crystal-chemical effects, diffusion constraints, and grain transport for the origin of the trace-element chemistry of Allende CAIs (which have important implications for chemical and physical processes in the solar nebula) is discussed.

Identification of the Ga interstitial in Al(x)Ga(1-x)As by optically detected magnetic resonance

A new optically detected magnetic resonance spectrum in Al(x)Ga(1-x)As is reported and assigned to native Ga interstitials. Luminescence-quenching signals were observed over the energy region from 0.75 to 1.1 eV. The optically detected magnetic resonance is nearly isotropic, with spin-Hamiltonian parameters g = 2.025 + or - 0.006, central hyperfine splitting A(Ga-69) = 0.050 + or - 0.001/cm, and A(Ga-71) = 0.064 + or - 0.001/cm for H near the 001 line. The strong hyperfine coupling denotes an electronic state of A1 symmetry, which current theories predict for the Ga interstitial but not the Ga antisite. The slight anisotropy probably indicates that the Ga(i) is paired with a second, unknown defect.

A local recent supernova - Evidence from X-rays, Al-26 radioactivity and cosmic rays

Possible ways in which cosmic rays could have been contaminated by a local recent supernova are discussed, and ways in which this contamination may be affecting interpretation of Al-26 gamma radiation and locally observed cosmic rays as samples of the average Galactic distribution are considered. Mass spectra of cosmic rays are examined to see whether there is enrichment by a population arising from supernova preacceleration. The reinterpretation of the anomalous component in terms of a local supernova model is addressed.

Trace element and petrologic clues to the formation of forsterite-bearing Ca-Al-rich inclusions in the Allende meteorite

New trace element and petrographic data are presented for the TE, 818a, 110-A forsterite-bearing Ca-Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) from the Allende meteorite; these form a continuum with type B1 and B2 CAIs, and are here accordingly designated 'type B3'. Evidence is adduced to the effect that 818a was strongly reheated and modified in the nebula after its initial crystallization. A three-stage formation process is required for 818a, involving crystallization of the primary CAI, reheating and partial volatilization of Mg and Si from the outer portion of the CAI, and a metasomatic alteration of the melilite-rich mantle.

Actinide chemistry in Allende Ca-Al-rich inclusions

Fission track radiography is used to investigate the U and Th microscale distribution in a set of Allende-meteorite Ca-Al-rich inclusions. In the Type B inclusions, the major phases melilite and fassaite are important actinide host phases, and on the rims of Type B inclusions and throughout all other inclusions studied, perovskite is the dominant actinide host phase. Results suggest that neither alteration nor loss or gain of an actinide-rich phase appears to have been an important Th/U fractionation mechanism, and that volatility differences may be the dominant factor. Th/U and rare earth element abundance patterns for the spinel and perovskite rim suggest rim formation by volatilization of interior material, and within the constraints of the brief time scale required for this heating, several mechanisms for spinel-perovskite rim formation are possible.

Sodium hydroxide anodization of Ti-Al-4V adherends

The use of sodium hydroxide anodization (SHA) for Ti-6Al-4V adherends is examined. The SHA surface is evaluated using SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy. The SHA procedures of Kennedy et al. (1983) were employed in this experiment. The photomicrographs of the SHA (sandblasted) and PSHA (sandblasted and pickled) oxide surface reveal that the two surfaces differ. The PSHA is patchy and similar to a chromic acid anodization surface and the porosity of the PSHA is more uniform than the SHA surface. The compositions of the surfaces are studied. It is noted that SHA is an effective pretreatment for Ti-6Al-4V adherends.

Electrical properties of Al-In-Sn alloys directionally solidified in high and low gravitational fields

The Al-In-Sn alloys were directionally solidified in the NASA KC-135 aircraft which flies a series of parabolas to generate high (high-g) and low (low-g) gravity forces parallel to the longitudinal growth axis. Thus, for a given sample, successive sections can be identified which were solidified in high-g and low-g. Measurements of the electronic properties of the samples reveal that: the resistivity of the low-g sections is larger (about a factor of 10) than that of the high-g sections; the low-g sections behave conductively like a semi-metal, while the high-g sections are essentially metallic; and both high-g and low-g sections are superconducting but the superconducting transition temperature of the low-g sections is 1 K higher than that of the high-g sections.

The 2D Rydberg series in Al I

High quality ab initio electonic structure calculations were performed on the 2D Rydberg series in Al I. The configuration 3s3p2(2D) is shown to contribute substantially to the lowest four 2D Rydberg states. The same configuration also contributes substantially to a 2D state embedded in the ionization continuum. Computed oscillator strengths for the first six members of the 2D Rydberg transitions are given: these should be of substantially high accuracy than currently available values.

Characterization of graded interface In(x)Ga(1-x)As/In(0.52)Al(0.48)As (x between 0.53 and 0.70) structures grown by molecular-beam epitaxy

Modulation-doped In(x)Ga(1-x)As/In(0.52)Al(0.48)As/InP structures were grown by molecular-beam epitaxy with x values between 53 and 70 percent. For pseudomorphic cases, graded instead of abrupt interfaces were used. Hall mobility and persistent photoconductivity measurements as a function of temperature were used to characterize samples with different structural parameters. Consistent trends in the variation of mobilities and two-dimensional carrier concentration, n(2D), under light and dark conditions have been observed and discussed in terms of applicable scattering mechanisms. The Hall mobilities are comparable to the best results obtained to date but with significantly higher n(2D) concentration.

A thermodynamic prediction for microporosity formation in aluminum-rich Al-Cu alloys

A computer model is used to predict the formation and degree of microporosity in a directionally solidified Al-4.5 wt pct Cu alloy, considering the interplay between solidification shrinkage and gas porosity. Macrosegregation theory is used to determine the local pressure within the interdendritic liquid. Results show interdendritic porosity for initial hydrogen contents in the 0.03-1 ppm range, and none below contents of 0.03. An increase in either the thermal gradient or the solidification rate is show to decrease the amount of interdendritic porosity.

Superconductivity up to 114 K in the Bi-Al-Ca-Sr-Cu-O compound system without rare-earth elements

Stable superconductivity up to 114 K has been reproducibly detected in Bi-Al-Ca-Sr-Cu-O multiphase systems without any rare-earth elements. Pressure has only a slight positive effect on T(c). These observations provide an extra material base for the study of the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity and also the prospect of reduced material cost for future applications of superconductivity.

Phase relations of a high-Mg basalt from the Aleutian Island arc - Implications for primary island arc basalts and high-Al basalts

An experimental investigation of a primitive high-Mg basalt, MK-15, collected from lava flows of the Unalaska Island in the Aleutian Island arc has been conducted in order to study primary and parental island arc basalts and the development of island arc magmas. The results suggest a model in which high-Al basalts are generated by moderate amounts of crystal fractionation from more primitive (high Mg/Mg + Fe, lower Al2O3) basaltic magmas near the arc crust-mantle boundary. Somewhere between 20-30 depth, significant amounts of clinopyroxene and olivine, with lesser amounts of spinel and possibly amphibole, fractionate, forming layer of olivine-clinopyroxenite at the base of the arc crust.

Dispersion strengthening of precipitation hardened Al-Cu-Mg alloys prepared by rapid solidification and mechanical alloying

Several Al-4Cu-1Mg-1.5Fe-0.75Ce alloys have been processed from either rapidly solidified or mechanically alloyed powder using various vacuum degassing parameters and consolidation techniques. Strengthening by the fine subgrains, grains, and the dispersoids individually or in combination is more effective when the alloys contain shearable precipitates; consequently, the strength of the alloys is higher in the naturally aged rather than the artificially aged condition. The strengths of the mechanically alloyed variants are greater than those produced from prealloyed powder. Properties and microstructural features of these dispersion strengthened alloys are discussed in regards to their processing histories.

Metastable defects in Be-doped Al(x)Ga(1-x)As

Deep-level transient spectroscopy has been used to study metastable defects in Be-doped Al(x)Ga(1-x)As grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. The metastability manifests itself by the appearance of different spectra depending upon whether the sample is cooled from a high temperature with zero bias or a reverse bias applied to it. The defects are found in concentrations of 10 to the 15th/cu cm in a sample doped with 10 to the 18th Be/cu cm and in much lower concentrations in a 10 to the 17th Be/cu cm sample. Isochronal annealing experiments indicate that the defect is multistable and that it is best modeled as a mobile interstitial which can reside at several sites near acceptor. The activation energies for these defects are between 0.2 and 0.5 eV above the valence band.

Deep-level transient spectroscopy of Al(x)Ga(1-x)As/GaAs using nondestructive acousto-electric voltage measurement

The amplitude and the transient time constant of the acoustoelectric voltage were measured as a function of temperature to determine the activation energy of deep levels in Al(x)Ga(1-x)As/GaAs grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. In comparison to other methods based on monitoring the capacitance transient, deep-level transient spectroscopy has several advantages. The technique is nondestructive and highly sensitive, and, because of the dependence of the polarity of the acoustoelectric voltage on the carrier type, it yields information about the charge of the transient carriers and the type of deep traps involved in the release or trapping of these carriers.

Cosmic ray production rates of Be-10 and Al-26 in quartz from glacially polished rocks

The concentrations of Be-10 and Al-26 in quartz crystals extracted from glacially polished granitic surfaces from the Sierra Nevada range are studied. These surfaces are identified with the glacial advance during the Tioga period about 11,000 yr ago. The measurements yield the most accurate estimates to date for the absolute production rates of three nuclides in SiO2 due to cosmic ray nucleons and muons for geomagnetic latitudes 43.8-44.6 N and altitudes 2.1-3.6 km.

Structure and properties during aging of an ultra-high strength Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy

The structure and properties of the strengthening phases formed during aging in an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy (Weldalite 049) were elulcidated, by following the development of the microstructure by means of TEM. The results of observations showed that the Weldalite 049 alloy has a series of unusual and technologically useful combinations of mechanical properties in different aging conditions, such as natural aging without prior cold work to produce high strengths, a reversion temper of lower yield strength and unusually high ductility, a room temperature reaging of the reversion temper eventually leading to the original T4 hardness, and ultrahigh-strength T6 properties.
