Contemporaneous Formation of Chondrules in the Al-26-MG-26 System for Ordinary and CO Chondrites

Chronometer using the short-lived extinct-nuclide (26)Al has been applied to chondrules in order to obtain of their formation ages. Previous studies were mostly performed on Al-rich chondrules, which constitute only 1% of all chondrules, because of their high Al/Mg ratios. Recently, (26)Al ages of major ferromagnesian chondrules in least equilibrated ordinary chondrites (OC) have been obtained. However, (26)Al ages of ferromagnesian chondrules in least equilibrated carbonaceous chondrites (CC) are very limited. Particularly, age data of FeO-poor (Type I) chondrules in CC have been scarcely obtained, because of their fine textures and lack of phases with high Al/Mg (>100) ratios. In order to clarify the origin and formation processes of chondrules, we started systematic investigations on Type I chondrules in the most pristine CC (CO3.0 Yamato-81020), by examining textures, bulk chemical compositions, (26)Al ages and oxygen isotopic compositions. We find Type I chondrules in CC formed contemporaneously with ferromagnesian chondrules in OC.

Aluminian Low-Ca Pyroxene in a Ca-Al-rich Chondrule from the Semarkona Meteorite

A Ca-AI-rich chondrule (labeled G7) from the Semarkona LL3.0 ordinary chondrite (OC) consists of 73 vol% glassy mesostasis, 22 vol% skeletal forsterite. 3 vol% fassaite (i.e., Al-Ti diopside), and 2 vol% Al-rich, low-Ca pyroxene. The latter phase, which contains up to 16.3 wt% A1203, is among the most AI-rich, low-Ca pyroxene grains ever reported. It is inferred that 20% of the tetrahedral sites and 13% of the octahedral sites in this grain are occupied by Al. Approximately parallel optical extinction implies that the Al-rich, low-Ca pyroxene grains are probably orthorhombic, consistent with literature data that show that A1203 stabilizes the orthoenstatite structure relative to protoenstatite at low pressure. The order of crystallization in the chondrule was forsterite, AI-rich low-Ca pyroxene, and fassaite; the residual liquid vitrified during chondrule quenching. Phase relationships indicate that, for a G7-composition liquid at equilibrium, spinel and anorthite should crystallize early and orthopyroxene should not crystallize at all. The presence of AI-rich orthopyroxene in G7 is due mainly to the kinetic failure of anorthite to crystallize; this failure was caused by quenching of the G7 precursor droplet. Aluminum preferentially enters the relatively large B tetrahedra of orthopyroxene; because only one tetrahedral size occurs in fassaite, this phase contains higher mean concentrations of Al2O3 than the Al-rich orthopyroxene (17.8 and 14.7 wt%, respectively). Chondrule G7 may have formed by remelting an amoeboid olivine inclusion that entered the OC region of the solar nebula during an episode of chondrule formation.

Observations of the Minor Species Al, Fe and Ca(+) in Mercury's Exosphere

We report the first detections of Al and Fe, and strict upper limits for Ca(+) in the exosphere of Mercury, using the HIRES spectrometer at the Keck I telescope. We report observed 4-sigma tangent columns of 1.5x10(exp 7) Al atoms per square centimeter at an altitude of 1220 km (1.5 Mercury radii (R(sub M)) from planet center), and that for Fe of 1.6 x 10 per square centimeter at an altitude of 950 km (1.4 R(sub M)). The observed 3-sigma Ca(+) column was 3.9x10(exp 6) ions per square centimeter at an altitude of 1630 km (1.67 R(sub M). A simple model for zenith column abundances of the neutral species were 9.5 x 10(exp 7) Al per square centimeter, and 3.0 x 10(exp 8) Fe per square centimeter. The observations appear to be consistent with production of these species by impact vaporization with a large fraction of the ejecta in molecular form. The scale height of the Al gas is consistent with a kinetic temperature of 3000 - 9000 K while that of Fe is 10500 K. The apparent high temperature of the Fe gas would suggest that it may be produced by dissociation of molecules. A large traction of both Al and Fe appear to condense in a vapor cloud at low altitudes.

Supra-Chondritic 7Li/6Li in the Hibonite-Rich Fun Inclusion “HIDALGO” in Dar al Gani 027 (CO3): A Hint for the Former Presence of Beryllium-7?

HIDALGO, a ~300×300 μm, hexagonally shaped, chemically and mineralogically simple hibonite crystal residing in the matrix of the CO3 chondrite Dar al Gani 027 (DaG027), is the newest member in the FUN-hibonite family. Based on the mass-dependent fractionations in O, Ca, and Ti isotopes, large negative anomalies in δ 48 Ca (= −30‰) and δ 50 Ti (= −20‰), and the abundances of short-lived radioisotopes of 10 Be, 26 Al, 41 Ca, which have all been reported previously, we have inferred that HIDALGO evolved from a condensate that most likely formed before 26 Al was built up and homogenized to 26 Al/ 27 Al = 5.2×10 −5 in the solar system. This precursor also incorporated 10 Be at the level of 10 Be/ 9 Be = 7.5×10 −4 , possibly through local irradiation of gas and/or dust or inheritance from the molecular cloud, but the amount of 41 Ca present at that time and location is uncertain. Strong heating of the precursor occurred ~0.5 Myr after the initial condensation, leading to total melting accompanied by extensive distillation (losing Mg, Si, and other moderately volatile elements) resulting in a stoichiometrically pure hibonite crystal with strongly mass fractionated O, Ca, and Ti isotope compositions and an extreme Ce depletion relative to other REEs. Here we report the results of Li isotope analyses of HIDALGO and discuss the irradiation history of this inclusion.

Influences of Mg Ions and Al Ions on Deposition Behavior of Supersaturated Silicic Acid - 20261

Silicic acid can change into various species such as deposit, colloidal, and soluble form under certain conditions: for example, gradual pH changes around geological disposal repositories. In particular, silicic acid deposits narrow groundwater flow paths, thereby restricting the flow of groundwater. Such effects may contribute to a delay in radionuclide migration. Previous studies have reported that silicic acid supersaturated in sodium and calcium ions can narrow the flow paths. This study examined the effect of magnesium (Mg) and aluminum (Al) ions on the deposition of supersaturated silicic acid on the solid phase. The deposition behavior of supersaturated silicic acid on the solid phase was investigated in a batch system while changing the initial supersaturation concentration, the coexisting ion concentration, and the amount of added solid phase. In the presence of Mg ions, silicic acid precipitation increased with increasing Mg ion concentration due to the influence of the electrolyte, and crosslinking reactions. The coexistence of Al ions significantly suppressed silicic acid deposition due to the formation of a covering on the solid surface during Al ion hydrolysis under conditions of high Al concentration (1.4 mM). On the basis of these experimental results, the apparent deposition rate constant of silicic acid was estimated to be in the range from 10{sup -11} to 10{sup -10} m/s. The Damkoehler number (the dimensionless number expressed by the ratio of the characteristic time of mass transfer and the chemical reaction constant) was sufficient to cause the clogging of the host rock by deposition. This suggests that supersaturated silicic acid deposition, regardless of the presence of Mg ions (and Al ions), contributes to improving barrier performance against radionuclide migration in the host rock. Effect of framework Al pairing on NO storage properties of Pd-CHA passive NOx adsorbers

For this study, three Pd/H-CHA samples were prepared containing 53.0%, 10.8% and 6.5% paired Al sites at near fixed Si/Al ratio and similar Pd loading. According to H 2 temperature-programmed reduction, Pd was present almost exclusively as isolated cations in the two samples containing the higher concentrations of paired Al sites, whereas in the other sample PdO was also present. Simulated lean cold start tests on the fresh samples conducted in a microflow reactor showed that the sample containing PdO stored the lowest amount of NOx. When tested with CO/H 2 , the sample containing 53.0% paired Al sites showed significantly better storage capacity than the other samples and deactivated less rapidly upon sequential tests. Experiments using lean gasoline engine exhaust revealed similar trends. This study showed that a high concentration of paired Al sites in Pd/H-CHA is beneficial for NOx storage capacity, thermal durability, and minimizing deactivation in the presence of CO/H 2 .
