MG-RAVENS: Working Group Update [Slides]

Problem Statement: Users in industry, who are planning the deployment and operation of microgrids, face a multi-domain problem that requires multiple engineering tools to solve; Existing tools lack interoperability, which requires tedious recreation and conversion of equipment models, and creates opportunities for errors in translation or through inconsistent assumptions; Microgrid modelers waste time reinventing the wheel because it is challenging to reuse existing distribution, load, generation, power flow, optimization models for new use cases.

Grid Capacity – What is it, what determines it, does one number work, and how does it relate to electric vehicles?

Grid capacity is effectively how much power the system can reliably deliver, whether that is to serve loads (load service capacity) or accept generation (hosting capacity). Grid capacity can also mean different things at different scales. On the whole power system, grid capacity may be the maximum amount of power generation available. For a specific region, grid capacity may be limited by how much power the transmission and distribution lines can safely carry to that region. At the feeder level, it may be how much photovoltaic generation can be included before reliability or operations are impacted. At the end-use or residential level, grid capacity may be the size of the service breaker for that house.

Working with Multiple MPIs: Overcoming ABI Incompatibility

Scientific applications rely on third-party libraries, which may have multiple implementations. While sharing an application programming interface (API), many of these implementations do not have a shared application binary interface (ABI) and require recompiling. Recompiling can be a long and complex process and sometimes not even an option when the application is shipped binary only. ABI incompatibility strikes at the heart of portability, productivity, and performance by (1) impeding application execution across different HPC and Cloud systems; (2) adding developer hours rebuilding an application; and (3) not taking advantage of host-optimized libraries. This tutorial teaches attendees a portable way to address ABI incompatibility in MPI using the Wi4MPI library. Wi4MPI translates the ABI dynamically from the MPI library used to build the application to a different MPI library available at run time. With Wi4MPI, HPC practitioners can break the portability barrier imposed by ABI incompatibility, potentially increase performance, and increase user productivity. The tutorial is broken down in three components: (1) Understanding ABI compatibility in MPI; (2) Translating MPI libraries dynamically; and (3) Applying dynamic translation to key use cases in HPC, including Containers. If you use more than one MPI library or supercomputer, this tutorial is for you.

LLNL International Working Group on Gamma Spectrometry - Preparation of IDB Dataset [Slides]

The spectral information and associated metadata, including source information, detector setup, and shielding configuration is described in human readable, comma-separated text files (csv). Six csv files are associated with each material type and include the following information (where [Isotope] is U, Pu, and MOX): [Isotope]_measurement_metadata Metadata of the measurement configuration, including material composition at time of acquisition (decay corrected from certificate date). Data that is unique to a measurement configuration e.g. detector geometry, source-detector distance, analyzer and other electronics used, attenuating materials are provided in this file. [Isotope]_spectrum_metadata The information that is unique to the spectrum. This includes detector specifications (e.g. date of acquisition, number of channels, gain (keV/channel), energy range, real and live time, full width half-maximum (FWHM) of the 186 or 208 peak for uranium or plutonium measurements, respectively. [Isotope]_source_metadata The source material used for the measurement, this includes the ratio and uncertainties of isotopes present and processing information of the material. In addition, the certificate information for the source material is listed. [Isotope]_spectrum_counts_metadata The counts per channel for each spectrum. This data is linked via the UID.spectrum index to the measurement_metadata file. [Isotope]_spectrum_checksum_metadata The MD5 checksum for the original spectrum file. This data is linked via the UID.spectrum index to the measurement_metadata file. This information is provided to prevent duplication of entries in the database. [Isotope]_provenance Details on the csv data provider, including laboratory and contract information.

Conditions Assessment and Preservation Work Plan for Portable Guard Shacks (TA-8-172 and TA-18-111)

The purpose of this report is to document the current state of deterioration and propose repairs for TA-8-172 and TA18-111, two portable guard shacks from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) which have been designated as historic resources. This preservation treatment plan has been prepared by the Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC), a historic preservation program within the National Park Service, to ensure that the treatments comply with guidelines established in The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

AIACHNE's contribution for Nuclear Energy Agency Working Party on International Nuclear Data Evaluation Co-operation Subgroup 50

The AIACHNE (AI/ML Informed cAlifornium CHi Nuclear data Experiment) project aims at designing an experiment for the 252 Cf Prompt Fission Neutron Spectrum (PFNS) that explores systematic biases in an experimental database retrieved from the EXFOR databases. To that end, machine learning (ML) methods were applied to pint-point measurement features likely related to bias. From that information, we selected a feature that should be explored by the AIACHNE experiment. Measurement features are metadata encapsulating all pertinent information about the physical measurement and analysis techniques. Examples are, for instance, what neutron and fission detectors were used for the physical metadata, and what background reduction techniques were employed for analysis techniques. Such metadata were retrieved both from EXFOR entries as well as the literature of data sets described in detail in Reference 2 (at the end of the article).
