Chromium and Tantalum Site Substitution Patterns in Ni3Al (L1(sub 2))gamma(prime)- Precipitates

The site substitution behavior of Cr and Ta in the Ni3Al (Ll2)-type gamma'-precipitates of a Ni-Al-Cr-Ta alloy is investigated by atom-probe tomography (APT) and first-principles calculations. Measurements of the gamma'-phase composition by APT suggest that Al, Cr, and Ta share the Al sublattice sites of the gamma'-precipitates. The calculated substitutional energies of the solute atoms at the Ni and Al sublattice sites indicate that Ta has a strong preference for the Al sites, while Cr has a weak Al site preference. Furthermore, Ta is shown to replace Cr at the Al sublattice sites of the gamma'-precipitates, altering the elemental phase partitioning behavior of the Ni-Al-Cr-Ta alloy.

Reversed Tantalum Capacitor Problem: A Failure to Fail, a Case Study

Reverse Ta capacitors are not expected to last for any length of time much less the over 74000 hours that they have been flying on Express (i.e. ExPRESS (Expedite the Processing of Experiments to the Space Station) Logistics Carrier (ELC) on the International Space Station. The report looks at the effects of moisture and temperature have on the capacitors. The removal of moisture has a far greater role in the survival of the capacitors than one would expect. Over 10000 hours of testing will be reviewed.

Reliability Issues with Polymer and MnO2 Tantalum Capacitors for Space Applications

This presentation gives a comparative analysis of degradation processes, failure modes and mechanisms in MnO2 and polymer technology capacitors. Analyzed conditions include effects of vacuum and radiation, soldering (pop-corning), long-term storage, operation at high temperatures, stability at low and high temperatures, and anomalous transients. Screening and qualification procedures to assure space-grade quality of CPTCs are suggested.

Critical Experiments Targeting the Epithermal/Intermediate Cross Sections of Tantalum

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have collaborated to develop a capability to test the epithermal/intermediate cross sections of materials at the SNL critical experiments facility using the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuel. The Sandia Critical Experiments Program provides a specialized facility for performing water moderated and reflected critical experiments with UO 2 fuel rod arrays. The facility offers the ability to modify the core configuration and reactor tank to evaluate various reactor cores for pitch, moderator characteristics, and other criteria. A history of safe operations and flexibility in reactor core configuration has resulted in the completion of nine sets of critical benchmark experiments that have been documented in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The experiment described here is expected to be evaluated for inclusion in the 2024 edition of the ICSBEP Handbook.

Quasiparticle spectroscopy in tantalum films with different Ta/sapphire interfaces

One of the crucial aspects of current research in quantum information science is the identification and control of loss mechanisms in superconducting circuits. Although microwave measurements directly quantify device performance, additional techniques that probe quasiparticle excitations in superconducting films are needed to understand the microscopic mechanisms underlying dissipation and decoherence. Here, we present results from quasiparticle spectroscopy of Ta/sapphire films by measuring the Meissner-state magnetic susceptibility using a precision frequency-domain resonator specifically designed for thin films. We find direct evidence for additional low-energy excitations in samples with lower internal quality factors. These excitations are consistent with deep subgap states due to two-level systems, Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states near the gap edge, and perhaps other pair-breaking mechanisms. The developed non-destructive frequency-domain quasiparticle spectroscopy is a valuable addition to the quantum materials toolbox.
