University role in astronaut life support systems: Space power supply systems

A brief description is given of the schemes suggested for providing electrical power aboard spacecraft. An attempt was made to list the major advantages and disadvantages of each scheme and to identify the particular areas in which it appears likely further research work may prove fruitful. Special attention was given to those research areas that appear suitable for colleges and university work. Chemical, solar, and nuclear power sources are considered together with the appropriate thermoelectric and turboelectric conversion systems.

The development of a non-cryogenic nitrogen/oxygen supply system

Development of the hydrazine/water electrolysis process in a manned spacecraft to provide metabolic oxygen and both oxygen and nitrogen for cabin leakage makeup was studied. Electrode development efforts were directed to stability, achieved with catalyst additives and improved processing techniques, and a higher hydrazine conversion efficiency, achieved by reducing catalyst loading on the cathodes. Extensive testing of the one-man breadboard N2/02 system provided complete characterization of cabin atmosphere control aspects. A detailed design of a prototype modular N2/02 unit was conducted. The contact heat exchanger which is an integral component of this design was fabricated and sucessfully design-verification tested.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system. Optimization study. Volume 5 B-1: Programmers manual for math models

A computer program for rapid parametric evaluation of various types of cryogenics spacecraft systems is presented. The mathematical techniques of the program provide the capability for in-depth analysis combined with rapid problem solution for the production of a large quantity of soundly based trade-study data. The program requires a large data bank capable of providing characteristics performance data for a wide variety of component assemblies used in cryogenic systems. The program data requirements are divided into: (1) the semipermanent data tables and source data for performance characteristics and (2) the variable input data which contains input parameters which may be perturbated for parametric system studies.

Shuttle cryogenics supply system. Optimization study. Volume 5 B-4: Programmers manual for space shuttle orbit injection analysis (SOPSA)

A computer program for space shuttle orbit injection propulsion system analysis (SOPSA) is described to show the operational characteristics and the computer system requirements. The program was developed as an analytical tool to aid in the preliminary design of propellant feed systems for the space shuttle orbiter main engines. The primary purpose of the program is to evaluate the propellant tank ullage pressure requirements imposed by the need to accelerate propellants rapidly during the engine start sequence. The SOPSA program will generate parametric feed system pressure histories and weight data for a range of nominal feedline sizes.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system optimization study. Volume 3: Technical report, section 10, 11 and 12

The evaluation of candidate cryogenic fuel systems for space shuttle vehicles is discussed. A set of guidelines was used to establish a matrix of possible combinations for the integration of potential cryogenic systems. The various concepts and combinations which resulted from the integration efforts are described. The parameters which were considered in developing the matrix are: (1) storage of cryogenic materials, (2) fuel lines, (3) tank pressure control, (4) thermal control, (5) fluid control, and (6) fluid conditioning. Block diagrams and drawings of the candidate systems are provided. Performance predictions for the systems are outlined in tables of data.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system optimization study. Volume 5A-2: Users manual for Space shuttle orbit injection system analysis (SOPSA)

SOPSA (Shuttle Orbit Injection Propulsion System Analysis) is a computer program to aid in the preliminary design of propellant feed systems for the space shuttle orbiter main engines. The primary purpose of the program is to evaluate propellant tank ullage pressure requirements imposed by the need to accelerate propellants rapidly during the engine start sequence. These requirements can influence the system design for a given engine as well as the suitability of a given system for use with different engines. During the vehicle design phase, the SOPSA program is used to establish feed system weight variations as a function of nominal line diameter and component and line configurations. The weight data are used in conjunction with pertinent cost data to establish optimum feed system designs.

An isotope heat source integrated with a 7 kW/e/ to 25 kW/e/ Brayton cycle space power supply.

The power system described is intended for applications in a manned space mission. The Isotope Reentry Vehicle (IRV) developed is considered together with the Heat Source (HS), the Heat Source Heat Exchanger and the Brayton Cycle Power Conversion Module. Other subjects discussed include the IRV/Brayton cycle spacecraft integration concept, abort and deorbit mechanization, emergency cooling methods, and crew shielding requirements. Mounting and integration for the IRV is to a large degree controlled by nuclear safety requirements. Another major factor in the installation concept is the type of emergency cooling or passive heat dump mode used in rejection of HS energy.
