Evaluation of solution procedures for material and/or geometrically nonlinear structural analysis by the direct stiffness method.

This paper presents an assessment of the solution procedures available for the analysis of inelastic and/or large deflection structural behavior. A literature survey is given which summarized the contribution of other researchers in the analysis of structural problems exhibiting material nonlinearities and combined geometric-material nonlinearities. Attention is focused at evaluating the available computation and solution techniques. Each of the solution techniques is developed from a common equation of equilibrium in terms of pseudo forces. The solution procedures are applied to circular plates and shells of revolution in an attempt to compare and evaluate each with respect to computational accuracy, economy, and efficiency. Based on the numerical studies, observations and comments are made with regard to the accuracy and economy of each solution technique.

Digital simulation of stiff linear dynamic systems.

A method is derived for digital computer simulation of linear time-invariant systems when the insignificant eigenvalues involved in such systems are eliminated by an ALSAP root removal technique. The method is applied to a thirteenth-order dynamic system representing a passive RLC network.

Node-recording method for stiffness matrix wavefront reduction in structural analysis

Method provides approach to automatic node relabeling that is consistent with requirements of wavefront concept. Specific applications are in analysis of aircraft, building structures, radar and surveillance structures, bridges, etc., or any other structure that is studied with aid of large and complex analytical model. Minimum growth sequencing is effective, rapid, and capable of producing economies.

Geometric stiffness characteristics of a rotating elastic appendage

Previous work by Likins (1972 and 1973) on finite element appendage equations for hybrid coordinate dynamic analysis and on the dynamic analysis of a system of hinge-connected rigid bodies with nonrigid appendages is extended to the establishment of a basis for a generic digital computer program to be developed for the simulation of nonrigid spacecraft. A subtle but significant generalization of that previous work as well as a correction and elaboration accomplish this purpose.

Analysis of longitudinal thickness-shear stiffness of a monolayer filamentary composite

The longitudinal thickness-shear behavior of a rectangular cross-section prism containing circular cross-section fibers embedded in a matrix is analyzed. The problem is formulated as a Saint-Venant flexure problem modeled by a tip-loaded cantilever composite beam and solution is obtained by the boundary-point least-squares method. It is shown that the longitudinal thickness-shear modulus is much greater than the in-plane shear modulus for a monofilament composite and therefore an independent analysis is necessary to predict the longitudinal thickness-shear behavior of the composite. Numerical results are presented in graphical form for various values of fiber volume fraction and material parameters typical of modern advanced composites.

A stiffness derivative finite element technique for determination of crack tip stress intensity factors

A finite element technique for determination of elastic crack tip stress intensity factors is presented. The method, based on the energy release rate, requires no special crack tip elements. Further, the solution for only a single crack length is required, and the crack is 'advanced' by moving nodal points rather than by removing nodal tractions at the crack tip and performing a second analysis. The promising straightforward extension of the method to general three-dimensional crack configurations is presented and contrasted with the practical impossibility of conventional energy methods.

Symmetric stiffness matrix for incompressible hyperelastic materials

Symmetric structure matrices are derived for solving plane strain and axisymmetric problems involving incompressible hyperelastic materials. An infinite hollow cylinder subjected to internal pressure is considered as an example. Displacement and hydrostatic pressure profiles are calculated using the Newton-Raphson iteration technique. The results are in good agreement with the exact curves.

An Experimental Study of the Nonlinear Stiffness of a Rotor Blade Undergoing Flap, Lag and Twist Deformations

The large deformation of a cantilevered beam under a gravity tip load was studied. The beam root is rotated so that the tip load is oriented at various angles with respect to the beam principal axes. Static twist and bending deflections of the tip and bending natural frequencies were measured as a function of tip load magnitude and orientation. The experimental data are compared with the results of a recently developed nonlinear structural theory and agreement is good for deflections that are small compared to the beam span with systematic deviations for larger deflections. These results support the validity and utility of the nonlinear structural theory for rotor blade applications.

An Experimental Study of the Nonlinear Stiffness of a Rotor Blade Undergoing Flap, Lag and Twist Deformations

This is an addendum to an experimental study of the large deformation of a cantilevered beam under a gravity tip load. It adds higher quality and new data on the static twist and bending deflections of the beam. The experimental data are compared with a recently developed nonlinear structural theory. Agreement is good for deflections that are small compared to the beam span and has systematic deviations for larger deflections.

Structural stiffness, strength and dynamic characteristics of large tetrahedral space truss structures

Physical characteristics of large skeletal frameworks for space applications are investigated by analyzing one concept: the tetrahedral truss, which is idealized as a sandwich plate with isotropic faces. Appropriate analytical relations are presented in terms of the truss column element properties which for calculations were taken as slender graphite/epoxy tubes. Column loads, resulting from gravity gradient control and orbital transfer, are found to be small for the class structure investigated. Fundamental frequencies of large truss structures are shown to be an order of magnitude lower than large earth based structures. Permissible loads are shown to result in small lateral deflections of the truss due to low-strain at Euler buckling of the slender graphite/epoxy truss column elements. Lateral thermal deflections are found to be a fraction of the truss depth using graphite/epoxy columns.

A procedure obtaining stiffnesses and masses of a structure from vibration modes and substructure static test data

A component mode desynthesis procedure is developed for determining the unknown vibration characteristics of a structural component (i.e., a launch vehicle) given the vibration characteristics of a structural system composed of that component combined with a known one (i.e., a payload). At least one component static test has to be performed. These data are used in conjunction with the system measured frequencies and mode shapes to obtain the vibration characteristics of each component. The flight dynamics of an empty launch vehicle can be determined from measurements made on a vehicle/payload combination in conjunction with a static test on the payload.

Effect of low-stiffness closeout overwrap on rocket thrust-chamber life

Three rocket thrust chambers with copper liners and a thrust level of 20.9 kN were cyclically test fired to failure. Two of the liners were made from oxygen free, high conductivity (OFHC) copper and from annealed Amzirc. The milled coolant channels were closed out with a thin copper closeout over which a fiberglass composite was wrapped to provide hoop strength only. Experimental data are presented, along with the results of a preliminary analysis that was performed before fabrication to evaluate the life extending potential of a thin copper closeout with a fiberglass overwrap.
