Field Programmable Gate Array-Based Reactor Protection Systems and Potential for Inclusion of Secure Elements to Improve Cybersecurity

For acceptable implementations of technologies like wireless communications, remote monitoring, etc., strong mitigations must be developed and evaluated to ensure that new attack pathways do not increase risk for Advanced Reactors. Secure Elements can be adopted and adapted for this purpose based on tamper resistance and cryptographic abilities, but research must be done to properly integrate into critical components such as FPGA-based Important to Safety systems in conjunction with current and future regulations on cyber security features in Advanced Reactors. Typically, the integration of a Secure Element happens during the POST and UEFI boot of a computing platform, performed by the Operating System, which is not possible with FPGAs because they do not include these firmware components. Work must be done to identify a reliable and secure method for integration in FPGA-based systems which lack Operating Systems and therefore complex boot procedures, system calls, etc.

Helical Photonic Metamaterials for Encrypted Chiral Holograms

Helical structures are among the most quintessential three-dimensional (3D) forms that exhibit mirror asymmetry, a hallmark of chirality. Various structural parameters of helices directly linked to chiroptical properties highlight their importance as essential optical metamaterials for polarization-resolved sensors, imaging, and spectroscopies. However, such function-defining properties remain incompletely understood due to fabrication challenges and the lack of a relationship between structure and optical properties. Here, helical structures are analyzed parametrically, and correlations are established that are applicable to the design of chiral helical optical metamaterials. By systematically varying independent parameters—such as from single-turn to five-turn helices and from small major radii to larger ones optimized to fit the unit cell—the underlying relationships with ellipticty are revealed. In addition to theoretical modeling, the findings are experimentally validated using 3D printing and terahertz spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that optimized helical structures are mechanically tunable and exhibit unprecedented optical properties, including broadband and high-magnitude ellipticity spectra. Being embedded in soft elastomers, helical arrays can serve as soft, stretchable optical-mechanical sensors and holograms containing encoded information, such as barcodes and quick response (QR) codes. Chiral QR codes are realized using pixelated single helices with different handedness, demonstrating their potential as advanced encryption/decryption systems for security applications and chiral metaholograms.

Power Grid Reliability Estimation via Adaptive Importance Sampling

Electricity production currently generates approximately 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in the USA. Thus, increasing the amount of renewable energy is a key step to carbon neutrality. However, integrating a large amount of fluctuating renewable generation is a significant challenge for power grid operating and planning. Grid reliability, i.e., an ability to meet operational constraints under power fluctuations, is probably the most important of them. In this letter, we propose computationally efficient and accurate methods to estimate the probability of line overflow, i.e., reliability constraints violation, under a known distribution of renewable energy generation. To this end, we investigate an importance sampling approach, a flexible extension of Monte-Carlo methods, which adaptively changes the sampling distribution to generate more samples near the reliability boundary. The approach allows to estimate overload probability in real-time based only on a few dozens of random samples, compared to thousands required by the plain Monte-Carlo. Our study focuses on high voltage direct current power transmission grids with linear reliability constraints on power injections and line currents. Herein, we propose a novel theoretically justified physics-informed adaptive importance sampling algorithm and compare its performance to state-of-the-art methods on multiple IEEE power grid test cases.

Optimal PMU Restoration for Power System Observability Recovery After Massive Attacks

Cyber-physically resilient power system operation requires rapid recovery of situational awareness after disastrous scenarios such as massive cyber attacks. In this article, the concept of optimal sequential restoration of Phasor Measurement Units is introduced, aiming at rapid recovery of power system observability in post-attack scenarios. Additionally, the observability recovery problem is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming problem to maximize the cumulative observability level gained over time during the restoration process. Three alternative objective functions-maximizing the number of observable buses, the number of observable branches, and the total amount of observable power flow-are considered. The effectiveness of the proposed optimal strategy is verified by comparing it with heuristic approaches on the IEEE 57-bus system.

Certification Validation Libraries

“The code “Certificate Validation Libraries” provides the ability to validate x509 certificates in python using a simple library. These libraries validate certificates in 3 ways: 1) validation that certificate has not expired. 2) validation that certificate has not been revoked and 3) validation of certificate's digital signature. The benefits of this code is that one can properly validate x509 certificates, thus strengthening the security of systems using these libraries.”

Increased range and contrast in fog with circularly polarized imaging

Fogs, low lying clouds, and other highly scattering environments pose a challenge for many commercial and national security sensing systems. Current autonomous systems rely on optical sensors for navigation whose performance is degraded by highly scattering environments. In our previous simulation work, we have shown that polarized light can penetrate through a scattering environment such as fog. We have demonstrated that circularly polarized light maintains its initial polarization state better than linearly polarized light, even through large numbers of scattering events and thus ranges. This has recently been experimentally verified by other researchers. In this work, we present the design, construction, and testing of active polarization imagers at short-wave infrared and visible wavelengths. We explore multiple polarimetric configurations for the imagers, focusing on linear and circular polarization states. The polarized imagers were tested at the Sandia National Laboratories Fog Chamber under realistic fog conditions. Here, we show that active circular polarization imagers can increase range and contrast in fog better than linear polarization imagers. We show that when imaging typical road sign and safety retro-reflective films, circularly polarized imaging has enhanced contrast throughout most fog densities/ranges compared to linearly polarized imaging and can penetrate over 15 to 25 m into the fog beyond the range limit of linearly polarized imaging, with a strong dependence on the interaction of the polarization state with the target materials.
