Relationships between fault characteristics and seismic responses in a large lab-scale tri-axial injection test conducted on a faulted Castlegate Sandstone

Here to investigate mechanisms causing microseismicity (M w < 2) at a CO 2 injection site, a large-scale triaxial block experiment was carried out on a faulted (saw-cut) cubic-meter of Castlegate Sandstone. The experiment consisted of injection tests at varying differential stresses, while monitoring and recording pore pressure and acoustic emissions (AEs). During the experiment, ~33,000 AEs and ~14 mm of horizontal displacement/slip, like a strike-slip fault movement, occurred. To understand the AE responses and ascertain fault characteristics near the located AEs, we modeled the topography of the fault surface, fault aperture, and fault-gouge thickness using pre- and post-experiment laser scans of the fault surface on each half of the block. Additionally, we characterized surface roughness parallel and perpendicular to slip. Models show crushing and flattening of the fault surfaces can be linked to the spatiotemporal distribution of AEs within 50 mm of the fault surface. Approximately 65% of AEs were in areas with small aperture (≤300 μm); thicker fault gouge was observed in adjacent areas with wider aperture and shows a two-fold reduction in grain size relative to unaltered Castlegate Sandstone. This work provides a conceptual understanding on fault surface evolution, which can be applied towards modeling of seismic slip.

The relationship between grain size distribution and ductile to brittle transition temperature in FeCrAl alloys

A FeCrAl (Fe12Cr6Al2Mo) alloy was prepared by two methods, (a) traditional wrought and (b) powder metallurgy (PM). Further, both alloys exhibited the same average grain size (~40 um), but the PM alloy displayed a wider grain size distribution. Charpy impact testing showed that the ductile to brittle transition temperature width is dependent on the grain size distribution width.

The Acyl-Proteome of Syntrophus aciditrophicus Reveals Metabolic Relationships in Benzoate Degradation

Syntrophus aciditrophicus is a syntrophic bacterium degrading fatty and aromatic acids into acetate, CO 2 , formate, and H 2 , consumed by methanogenic archaea. The syntroph’s acyllysine modifications were analyzed with a workflow avoiding antibody enrichment, enabling unbiased global acylation profiling. Seven acyl modification types were identified, six corresponding to reactive acyl-CoA species intermediates in benzoate degradation. Benzoatedegrading enzymes were also prominent among the 60 acylated proteins. The abundant acylations and active deacylases suggest that post-translational modifications directly regulate syntrophic benzoate degradation

Evolutionary relationships among shell proteins of carboxysomes and metabolosomes

Bacterial microcompartments (BMCs) are self-assembling prokaryotic organelles which encapsulate enzymes within a polyhedral protein shell. Additionally, the shells are comprised of only two structural modules, distinct domains that form pentagonal and hexagonal building blocks, which occupy the vertices and facets, respectively. As all BMC loci encode at least one hexamer-forming and one pentamer-forming protein, the evolutionary history of BMCs can be interrogated from the perspective of their shells. Here, we discuss how structures of intact shells and detailed phylogenies of their building blocks from a recent phylogenomic survey distinguish families of these domains and reveal clade-specific structural features. These features suggest distinct functional roles that recur across diverse BMCs. For example, it is clear that carboxysomes independently arose twice from metabolosomes, yet the principles of shell assembly are remarkably conserved.
