Measurement of directional muon beams generated at the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator

We present the detection of directional muon beams produced using a PW laser facility at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The muon source is a multi-GeV electron beam generated in a laser-plasma accelerator interacting with a high- converter target. The GeV photons resulting from the interaction are converted into a high-flux, directional muon beam via pair production. By employing scintillators to capture delayed events, we were able to identify the produced muons and characterize the source. Using theoretical knowledge of the muon production process combined with simulations that are in excellent agreement with the experiments, we demonstrate that laser-plasma accelerators have the capability of generating electron beams with characteristics suitable to produce GeV-scale muons that offer unique advantages with respect to the cosmic background. Laser-plasma-accelerator-based muon sources can therefore enhance muon imaging applications thanks to their compactness, directionality, and high yields, which reduce the exposure time by orders of magnitude compared to cosmic ray muons. Using the eant4-based simulation code we developed to gain insight into the experimental results, we can design future experiments and applications based on LPA-generated muons.

Cold-atom quantum simulator for string and hadron dynamics in non-Abelian lattice gauge theory

We propose an analog quantum simulator for simulating real-time dynamics of (1+1)-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory well within the existing capacity of ultracold-atom experiments. The scheme calls for the realization of a two-state ultracold fermionic system in a one-dimensional bipartite lattice, and the observation of subsequent tunneling dynamics. Being based on the loop string hadron formalism of SU(2) lattice gauge theory, this simulation technique is completely SU(2) invariant and simulates accurate dynamics of physical phenomena such as string breaking and/or pair production. The scheme is scalable and particularly effective in simulating the theory in the weak-coupling regime, and also a bulk limit of the theory in the strong-coupling regime up to certain approximations. This paper also presents a numerical benchmark comparison of the exact spectrum and real-time dynamics of lattice gauge theory to that of the atomic Hamiltonian with an experimentally realizable range of parameters.

Quantum dynamics of non-Hermitian many-body Landau-Zener systems

Here, we develop a framework to solve a large class of linearly driven non-Hermitian quantum systems. Such a class of models in the Hermitian scenario is commonly known as multistate Landau-Zener models. The non-Hermiticity is due to the anti-Hermitian couplings between the diabatic levels. We find that there exists a conservation law, unique to this class of models, that describes the simultaneous growth of the unnormalized wave functions. These models have practical applications in Bose-Einstein condensates, and they can describe the dynamics of multispecies bosonic systems. The conservation law relates to a pair-production mechanism that explains the dissociation of diatomic molecules into atoms. We provide a general framework for both solvable and semiclassically solvable non-Hermitian Landau-Zener models. Our findings will open alternative avenues for a number of diverse emergent phenomena in explicitly time-dependent non-Hermitian quantum systems.

Search for a light charged Higgs boson in the H$^\pm$ $\to $ cs channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A search is conducted for a low-mass charged Higgs boson produced in a top quark decay and subsequently decaying into a charm and a strange quark. The data sample was recorded in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The search is performed in the process of top quark pair production, where one top quark decays to a bottom quark and a charged Higgs boson and the other to a bottom quark and a W boson. With the W boson decaying to a charged lepton (electron or muon) and a neutrino, the final state comprises an isolated lepton, missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets, of which two are tagged as b jets. To enhance the search sensitivity, one of the jets originating from the charged Higgs boson is required to satisfy a charm tagging selection. No significant excess beyond standard model predictions is found in the dijet invariant mass distribution. An upper limit in the range 1.68%–0.25% is set on the branching fraction of the top quark decay to the charged Higgs boson and bottom quark for a charged Higgs boson mass between 80 and 160 GeV.

Search for long-lived particles decaying to jets with displaced vertices in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 13 TeV

A search is presented for long-lived particles produced in pairs in proton-proton collisions at the LHC operating at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV . The data were collected with the CMS detector during the period from 2015 through 2018, and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 140 fb –1 . This search targets pairs of long-lived particles with mean proper decay lengths between 0.1 and 100 mm , each of which decays into at least two quarks that hadronize to jets, resulting in a final state with two displaced vertices. No significant excess of events with two displaced vertices is observed. In the context of R-parity violating supersymmetry models, the pair production of long-lived neutralinos, gluinos, and top squarks is excluded at 95% confidence level for cross sections larger than 0.08 fb, masses between 800 and 3000 GeV, and mean proper decay lengths between 1 and 25 mm.

Measurements of Σ electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region using the untagged initial-state radiation technique

The process e + e − → Σ + Σ ¯ − is studied from threshold up to 3.04 GeV / c 2 via the initial-state radiation technique using data with an integrated luminosity of 12.0 fb − 1 , collected at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.258 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The pair production cross sections and the effective form factors of Σ are measured in eleven Σ + Σ ¯ − invariant mass intervals from threshold to 3.04 GeV / c 2 . The results are consistent with the previous results from Belle and BESIII. Furthermore, the branching fractions of the decays J / ψ → Σ + Σ ¯ − and ψ ( 3686 ) → Σ + Σ ¯ − are determined and the obtained results are consistent with the previous results of BESIII. Search for supersymmetry in final states with disappearing tracks in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV

A search is presented for charged, long-lived supersymmetric particles in final states with one or more disappearing tracks. The search is based on data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb −1 . The search is performed over final states characterized by varying numbers of jets, 𝑏-tagged jets, electrons, and muons. The length of signal-candidate tracks in the plane perpendicular to the beam axis is used to characterize the lifetimes of wino- and Higgsino-like charginos produced in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The d⁢𝐸/d⁢𝑥 energy loss of signal-candidate tracks is used to increase the sensitivity to charginos with a large mass and thus a small Lorentz boost. The observed results are found to be statistically consistent with the background-only hypothesis. Limits on the pair-production cross section of gluinos and squarks are presented in the framework of simplified models of supersymmetric particle production and decay, and for electroweakino production based on models of wino and Higgsino dark matter. The limits presented are the most stringent to date for scenarios with light third-generation squarks and a wino- or Higgsino-like dark matter candidate capable of explaining the observed dark matter relic density.

Quantum simulations for strong-field QED

Quantum field theory in the presence of strong background fields contains interesting problems where quantum computers may someday provide a valuable computational resource. In the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era it is useful to consider simpler benchmark problems in order to develop feasible approaches, identify critical limitations of current hardware, and build new simulation tools. Here we perform quantum simulations of strong-field QED (SFQED) in 3 + 1 dimensions, using real-time nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production as a prototypical process. The strong-field QED Hamiltonian is derived and truncated in the Furry-Volkov mode expansion, and the interactions relevant for Breit-Wheeler are transformed into a quantum circuit. Quantum simulations of a “null double slit” experiment are found to agree well with classical simulations following the application of various error mitigation strategies, including an asymmetric depolarization algorithm which we develop and adapt to the case of Trotterization with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. We also discuss longer-term goals for the quantum simulation of SFQED. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Combining resonant and tail-based anomaly detection

In many well-motivated models of the electroweak scale, cascade decays of new particles can result in highly boosted hadronic resonances (e.g., Z / W / h ). This can make these models rich and promising targets for recently developed resonant anomaly detection methods powered by modern machine learning. We demonstrate this using the state-of-the-art classifying anomalies through outer density estimation () method applied to supersymmetry scenarios with gluino pair production. We show that , despite being model agnostic, is nevertheless competitive with dedicated cut-based searches, while simultaneously covering a much wider region of parameter space. The gluino events also populate the tails of the missing energy and H T distributions, making this a novel combination of resonant and tail-based anomaly detection. Evidence for B + → K + ν ν ¯ decays

We search for the rare decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ in a 362 fb − 1 sample of electron-positron collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying B meson in ϒ ( 4 S ) → B B ¯ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal B candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying B meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the B + → K + ν ν ¯ branching fraction of [ 2.7 ± 0.5 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 and [ 1.1 − 0.8 + 0.9 ( stat ) − 0.5 + 0.8 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ to be [ 2.3 ± 0.5 ( stat ) − 0.4 + 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , providing the first evidence for this decay at 3.5 standard deviations. The combined result is 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for stealth supersymmetry in final states with two photons, jets, and low missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

The results of a search for stealth supersymmetry in final states with two photons and jets, targeting a phase space region with low missing transverse momentum ( p T miss ), are reported. The study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . As LHC results continue to constrain the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the low p T miss regime is increasingly valuable to explore. To estimate the backgrounds due to standard model processes in such events, we apply corrections derived from simulation to an estimate based on a control selection in data. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified stealth supersymmetry models with gluino and squark pair production. The observed data are consistent with the standard model predictions, and gluino (squark) masses of up to 2150 (1850) GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level.

Measurement of jet substructure in boosted $t\overline{t}$ events with the ATLAS detector using 140 fb -1 of 13 TeV $pp$ collisions

Measurements of the substructure of top-quark jets are presented, using 140 fb -1 of 13 TeV pp collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Top-quark jets reconstructed with the anti-k t algorithm with a radius parameter R = 1.0 are selected in top-quark pair ($t\overline{t}$) events where one top quark decays semileptonically and the other hadronically, or where both top quarks decay hadronically. The top-quark jets are required to have transverse momentum p T > 350 GeV, yielding large samples of data events with jet p T values between 350 and 600 GeV. One- and two-dimensional differential cross sections for eight substructure variables, defined using only the charged components of the jets, are measured in a particle-level phase space by correcting for the smearing and acceptance effects induced by the detector. The differential cross sections are compared with the predictions of several Monte Carlo simulations in which top-quark pair-production quantum chromodynamic matrix-element calculations at next-to-leading-order precision in the strong coupling constant α S are passed to leading-order parton shower and hadronization generators. The Monte Carlo predictions for measures of the broadness, and also the two-body structure, of the top-quark jets are found to be in good agreement with the measurements, while variables sensitive to the three-body structure of the top-quark jets exhibit some tension with the measured distributions.

Search for pair-produced vectorlike quarks coupling to light quarks in the lepton plus jets final state using 13 TeV p p collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks (VLQs) that each decay into a W boson and a light quark. This study focuses on events where one W boson decays into leptons and the other into hadrons. The search analyzed 140 fb -1 of pp collision data with $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 during run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The final state is characterized by a high-transverse-momentum isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, multiple small-radius jets, and a single large-radius jet identified as originating from the hadronic decay of a boosted W boson. With higher center-of-mass energy and integrated luminosity than in the run 1 search, and improved analysis tools, this analysis excludes VLQs (Q) with masses below 1530 GeV at 95% confidence level for the branching ratio $\mathscr{B}$⁡(Q →W⁢q) =1, an improvement of 840 GeV on the previous ATLAS limit.

Comment on "Table-Top Laser-Based Source of Femtosecond, Collimated, Ultrarelativistic Positron Beams"

Sarri et al. have reported the generation of low divergence (~3 mrad), high-density (10 14 cm –3 ) positron beams using millimeter-scale converter targets and a 50 pC, 200 MeV laser-wakefield accelerated (LWFA) electron source. It was argued that the positron divergence was dominated by the pair-production birth cone angle $θ_{e+} ≈ 1/γ_{e–}$. The small, energy-independent divergence value was used to infer a positron beam density of 2 × 10 14 cm –3 from a 4.2 mm Ta converter target where the divergence and yield measurements agreed with their Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We have repeated these simulations using experimental conditions and disagree with the reported density, divergence, and yield values by up to factors > 50. In our work, we find that a divergence on the order of milliradian is not physical and can only be achieved if inelastic particle scattering is omitted in the calculations.

Observation of the $γγ → ττ$ Process in $\mathrm{Pb + Pb}$ Collisions and Constraints on the $\tau$-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions, Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb, and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment, a τ . The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb -1 of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations, and a signal strength of μ ττ =1.03$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ assuming the Standard Model value for a τ . To measure a τ , a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for aτ is -0.057 < a τ < 0.024.

Statistical Combination of ATLAS Run 2 Searches for Charginos and Neutralinos at the LHC

Statistical combinations of searches for charginos and neutralinos using various decay channels are performed using 139 fb −1 of 𝑝⁢𝑝 collision data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Searches targeting pure-wino chargino pair production, pure-wino chargino-neutralino production, or Higgsino production decaying via standard model 𝑊, 𝑍, or ℎ bosons are combined to extend the mass reach to the produced supersymmetric particles by 30–100 GeV. The depth of the sensitivity of the original searches is also improved by the combinations, lowering the 95% C.L. cross-section upper limits by 15%–40%.

Neutrinos and Gamma Rays from Beta Decays in an Active Galactic Nucleus NGC 1068 Jet

We show that TeV neutrinos and high-energy gamma rays detected from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 can simultaneously be explained in a model based on the beta decays of neutrons produced in the photodisintegration of 4 He nuclei on ultraviolet photons in the jet. The photodisintegration of nuclei occurs at energies above several PeV, which explains the 1–100 TeV energies of the observed neutrinos. The TeV gamma-ray flux accompanying the beta decays is expected to be much lower than the neutrino flux, which agrees with the observations of NGC 1068 showing a gamma-ray deficit as compared to the expectations from proton-photon interactions. Furthermore, the synchrotron and inverse Compton gamma-ray flux associated with protons’ Bethe-Heitler pair production and the photopion processes in the jet can be consistent with the observed gamma-ray flux at GeV energies for a plausible range of magnetic fields of jets. This scenario, combining beta decay and Bethe-Heitler, can be applied to other jet Seyfert galaxies such as NGC 4151. Future measurements of the neutrino flavor ratio can help confirm the beta-decay origin of the observed neutrinos.

Mechanical cosmology: Simulating scalar fluctuations in expanding universes using synthetic mechanical lattices

Inspired by recent advances in observational astrophysics and continued explorations in the field of analog gravity, we discuss the prospect of simulating models of cosmology within the context of synthetic mechanical lattice experiments. We focus on the physics of expanding universe scenarios described by the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric. Specifically, quantizing scalar fluctuations in a background FLRW spacetime leads to a quadratic bosonic Hamiltonian with temporally varying pair production terms. Here we present a mapping that provides a one-to-one correspondence between these classes of cosmology models and feedback-coupled mechanical oscillators. As proof of principle, we then perform experiments on a synthetic mechanical lattice composed of such oscillators. We simulate two different FLRW expansion scenarios with universes dominated by vacuum energy and matter and discuss our experimental results. Published by the American Physical Society 2025
