Filter failure detection for systems with large space structure dynamics

A failure detection filter is applied to the detection of actuator and sensor failures on a free-free beam. Computer simulation tests are used to verify the filter design and study the effect of unmodeled modes on filter performance. In actuator tests, the failure signal to spillover noise ratio was found to be greatest when the filter bandwidth was 5 rad/sec beyond the input frequency. Observation spillover, however, was found to vary widely in tests run under similar conditions (same input frequency and filter poles) but with different detector gains. In sensor tests, the maximum signal-to-noise ratio for varying filter bandwidth depended upon the initial conditions placed on the unmodeled modes; the performance was good even for initial amplitudes on the first unmodeled mode 7.5% of that on the last modeled mode.

Component Cost Analysis of Large Scale Systems

The ideas of cost decomposition is summarized to aid in the determination of the relative cost (or 'price') of each component of a linear dynamic system using quadratic performance criteria. In addition to the insights into system behavior that are afforded by such a component cost analysis CCA, these CCA ideas naturally lead to a theory for cost-equivalent realizations.

Analysis and design of ion thruster for large space systems

Design analyses showed that an ion thruster of approximately 50 cm in diameter will be required to produce a thrust of 0.5 N using xenon or argon as propellants, and operating the thruster at a specific impulse of 3530 sec or 6076 sec respectively. A multipole magnetic confinement discharge chamber was specified.

Development of management technology for large power systems

Autonomous power management has been proposed as a method to perform optimization of power subsystem performance in connection with the management of multikilowatt space platforms. A concept for a 250-kW utility-type power subsystem was developed. A Cassegrain concentrator solar array primary source is conditioned by a solar array switching unit which supplies seventeen 220 +20 Vdc power channels. A power management subsystem provides the monitoring and control of the overall electrical power subsystem. The discussed system concept for autonomous management of high power space platforms utilizes on-board microprocessors in a decentralized data management architecture. A data bus protocol and a data bus contention resolution scheme were selected in conjunction with the dencentralized management architecture.

Innovative method for the thermal cycling of large spacecraft systems

The use of low cost, off the shelf prefabricated enclosures for spacecraft system thermal cycling applications was indicated. The enclosures are erected in the satellite integration areas without disturbing the test article, electrical test set, or RF interfaces. They are assembled by metal clad, modular urethane panels. These panels are self supporting, and are locked and sealed to each other on assembly. Penetrations for interconnecting cables, coaxial and waveguide services; and temperature conditioning inlet and outlet ducts are easily incorporated where required. The facility and its advantages and intrinsic benefits are described.

Update on a system for large area crop inventory from remotely sensed data

In connection with the conduction of the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE), a state-of-the-art technology for the inventory of crops using satellite data was developed and tested over a period of three years (1975-77). A method was obtained for determining the total wheat production in a given region by looking at only a subset of its area. The present investigation is concerned with the current state of the art as obtained in the aggregation technology of the Agriculture and Resources Inventory Surveys Through Aerospace Remote Sensing (AgRISTARS) program. Attention is given to details of AgRISTARS baseline aggregation technology, and to recent improvements and future research directions.

Seeded crystal growth of pseudobinary systems with large liquidus-solidus separation

The design and execution of seeded melt growth involving concentrated alloys is strongly dependent on the crystal-melt interface temperature and its change during seeding and growth. Thermodynamic instabilities during the seeding process can be controlled by the choice of the seed and melt composition and by the axial temperature gradient of the growth apparatus. These basic factors controlling seeded melt growth of concentrated alloys are of major importance for planning space experiments.

Future directions in materials and structures for space applications

A comprehensive evaluation is made of materials and structural technology requirements for future space transportation systems, large spacecraft, and space structures. Exceptional promise is noted in carbon-carbon composites for large area thermal protection systems. High temperature test facilities, techniques, and instrumentation systems have unfortunately been neglected, and a materials systems data base suitable for high confidence design of long life space structures has yet to be compiled with a view to material environments in low earth and geosynchronous orbits. A coordinated analysis, ground test, and in-orbit experimentation program for candidate structure designs is called for.
