Reinforcement core facilitates O-ring installation

Reinforcement core holds O-ring in place within a structure while adjacent parts are being assembled. The core in the O-ring adds circumferential rigidity to the O-ring material. This inner core does not appreciably affect the sectional elasticity or gland-sealing characteristics of the O-ring.

Mounting facilitates removal and installation of flame-detector rods

Flame-detector-rod holder is easily removed from the wall of a gas-fired furnance for maintenance or replacement of the detector rod without requiring shutdown of the furnace. The holder consists of an externally threaded outer bushing, a sleeve which is held inside the outer bushing with a set screw, and a detector rod assembly which screws into the sleeve.

Thermocouples easily installed in hard-to- get-to places

Thermocouple wires attached to charged capacitors are inserted in a drilled hole. An electric charge fuses the thermocouple wires to the host material. This method has shown excellent results in fusing nichrome, chromel, Inconel, and stainless steel wires to nickel, beryllium, iron, steel, Inconel, and stainless steel.

The helium system of the maser installation at the Goonhilly satellite-communication earth station

A travelling-wave solid-state maser anlplifier is used to provide the first stage of amplification in the receiving system at the communication-satellite earth-station at Goonhilly Downs. While the maser itself was built by an industrial research laboratory, the auxiliary supplies and equipment essential for the operation of the maser were designed and built by staff of the Post Office Research Station. A major part of this auxiliary equipment consists of apparatus for handling the helium refrigerant.

Pipe installation technique avoids disturbing work areas

Pipe supports for 0.305 m diameter pipes are pre-hung and an opening is cut in exterior wall of the building. Pipes are welded outside the building and then rolled through the opening into the final location. Technique affords cost and time savings.
