Aerosol Decline Accelerates the Increasing Extreme Precipitation in China

Extreme precipitation is becoming more intense and frequent. The increasing trends in extreme precipitation in China in warm season related to changes in aerosols and greenhouse gases (GHGs) are investigated using observations, reanalysis data and model simulations. A significant accelerating increase in extreme precipitation occurred around 2010, with the trend in accumulated extreme rainfall amount (R95pTOT) increasing from 2.88 mm per decade during 2000–2010 to 22.88 mm per decade during 2010–2023. The sudden acceleration of the increasing extreme precipitation is largely attributed to the reverse in aerosol trends associated with China’s clean air actions, which affects extreme precipitation through perturbing cloud microphysics and atmospheric dynamics, accounting for half of the change in R95pTOT trends. Future aerosol reduction to achieve carbon neutrality is shown to continue to intensify the extreme precipitation, which overweighs the effect induced by GHGs, highlighting the importance of aerosol changes in modulating future climate and weather extremes.

Mathematical Modeling of Liquid-Phase Alkylation of Benzene with Ethylene Considering the Process Unsteadiness

Ethylbenzene is a key intermediate in the manufacture of styrene that is an important industrial monomer. Ethylbenzene is produced by benzene alkylation using either gas-phase or liquid-phase methods. The liquid-phase alkylation that uses liquid acidic catalysts needs to be improved. We develop a mathematical model for the liquid-phase benzene alkylation. The reaction scheme, designed with a due analysis of desired and side reactions, and with the analysis of the formation of deactivating agents, reflects, in particular, the influence of the concentration of heavy hydrocarbons on the catalyst activity. The account of the catalyst deactivation by heavy alkylaromatics allows predictions of the temporal changes in the outputs of the alkylation process. In particular, the decrease of the ethylbenzene concentration by 2–3 wt % and increase of the polyalkylate outlet concentration by 1.5–2 wt % are the results of the catalyst deactivation. These effects, however, can be compensated by 1.3-time increase of polyalkylate supply and by the temperature increase up to 398 K. Finally, the calculations also show that it is possible to decrease the supply of fresh catalyst from 0.498 to 0.472 t/hour without loss in the yield of ethylbenzene.

Parametric matrix models

We present a general class of machine learning algorithms called parametric matrix models. In contrast with most existing machine learning models that imitate the biology of neurons, parametric matrix models use matrix equations that emulate physical systems. Similar to how physics problems are usually solved, parametric matrix models learn the governing equations that lead to the desired outputs. Parametric matrix models can be efficiently trained from empirical data, and the equations may use algebraic, differential, or integral relations. While originally designed for scientific computing, we prove that parametric matrix models are universal function approximators that can be applied to general machine learning problems. After introducing the underlying theory, we apply parametric matrix models to a series of different challenges that show their performance for a wide range of problems. For all the challenges tested here, parametric matrix models produce accurate results within an efficient and interpretable computational framework that allows for input feature extrapolation.

A deep learning approach to identify missing is-a relations in SNOMED CT

Abstract Objective SNOMED CT is the largest clinical terminology worldwide. Quality assurance of SNOMED CT is of utmost importance to ensure that it provides accurate domain knowledge to various SNOMED CT-based applications. In this work, we introduce a deep learning-based approach to uncover missing is-a relations in SNOMED CT. Materials and Methods Our focus is to identify missing is-a relations between concept-pairs exhibiting a containment pattern (ie, the set of words of one concept being a proper subset of that of the other concept). We use hierarchically related containment concept-pairs as positive instances and hierarchically unrelated containment concept-pairs as negative instances to train a model predicting whether an is-a relation exists between 2 concepts with containment pattern. The model is a binary classifier leveraging concept name features, hierarchical features, enriched lexical attribute features, and logical definition features. We introduce a cross-validation inspired approach to identify missing is-a relations among all hierarchically unrelated containment concept-pairs. Results We trained and applied our model on the Clinical finding subhierarchy of SNOMED CT (September 2019 US edition). Our model (based on the validation sets) achieved a precision of 0.8164, recall of 0.8397, and F1 score of 0.8279. Applying the model to predict actual missing is-a relations, we obtained a total of 1661 potential candidates. Domain experts performed evaluation on randomly selected 230 samples and verified that 192 (83.48%) are valid. Conclusions The results showed that our deep learning approach is effective in uncovering missing is-a relations between containment concept-pairs in SNOMED CT.

Infrared quantum ghost imaging of living and undisturbed plants

Quantum ghost imaging (QGI) is a method that measures absorption at extremely low light intensities. Nondegenerate QGI probes a sample at one wavelength while forming an image with correlated photons at a different wavelength. This spectral separation alleviates the need for imaging detectors with high sensitivity in the near-infrared (NIR) region, thereby reducing the required illumination intensity. Using NCam, a single-photon detector, we demonstrated nondegenerate QGI with unprecedented sensitivity and contrast, obtaining images of living plants with less than 1% light transmission. The plants experienced 3aW/cm 2 of light during imaging, orders of magnitude below starlight. This realization of QGI expands the method to extremely low-light bioimaging and imaging of light-sensitive samples, where minimizing illumination intensity is crucial to prevent phototoxicity or sample degradation.

Unpinning the Lynchpin: Development of a system to introduce redundancy at Department of Energy laboratories

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory system employs over 78,000 people and had a budget of $8.1 billion for Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23). This diverse workforce includes employees at all levels from operational support staff to senior level management. Together, the labs take on incredibly complex and unique technical challenges in an attempt to address fundamental National and global needs. These technical challenges often require specialized training such that only a single person is truly capable of completing specific tasks. With the modern competitive environment, and an aging workforce, the risk of technical capability loss is highly probable with potentially severe impact. An online survey of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL) employees, a typical DOE lab, found that of responders with greater than 10 years of experience, 100% of respondents felt burnt out, 40% felt they were not paid fairly, and 50% believe that not enough is done by leadership to retain them as an employee. Couple that to an aging workforce, and the risk of losing institutional knowledge due to single point of failure, or lynchpin, is significant. There is a need for a system which reduces the risk of operational and technical losses due to lynchpin employees leaving the organization. A mitigation of this risk would lead to the successful transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next, improving the rate of development and minimizing general risk of mistakes.

The DSA Toolkit Shines Light Into Dark and Stormy Archives

Web archive collections are created with a particular purpose in mind. A curator selects seeds, or original resources, which are then captured by an archiving system and stored as archived web pages, or mementos. The systems that build web archive collections are often configured to revisit the same original resource multiple times. This is incredibly useful for understanding an unfolding news story or the evolution of an organization. Unfortunately, over time, some of these original resources can go off-topic and no longer suit the purpose for which the collection was originally created. They can go off-topic due to web site redesigns, changes in domain ownership, financial issues, hacking, technical problems, or because their content has moved on from the original topic. Even though they are off-topic, the archiving system will still capture them, thus it becomes imperative to anyone performing research on these collections to identify these off-topic mementos. Hence, we present the Off-Topic Memento Toolkit, which allows users to detect off-topic mementos within web archive collections. The mementos identified by this toolkit can then be separately removed from a collection or merely excluded from downstream analysis. The following similarity measures are available: byte count, word count, cosine similarity, Jaccard distance, Sørensen-Dice distance, Simhash using raw text content, Simhash using term frequency, and Latent Semantic Indexing via the gensim library. We document the implementation of each of these similarity measures. We possess a gold standard dataset generated by manual analysis, which contains both off-topic and on-topic mementos. Using this gold standard dataset, we establish a default threshold corresponding to the best F1 score for each measure. We also provide an overview of potential future directions that the toolkit may take.

Strategizing emission cuts in China to mitigate short-term warming from clean air policies

Aerosol-cloud interactions remain one of the largest sources of uncertainty in estimates of anthropogenic climate forcing. Reducing aerosols to achieve air quality improvement and climate goals can cause unintended warming due to the weakening of aerosol cooling. Here we investigate the climate impacts of spatially optimized sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emission reduction under a carbon-neutral pathway in China. We find that targeting reduction in highly polluted regions in China significantly suppresses the rise in effective radiative forcing due to aerosol-cloud interactions (ERF aci ) during 2020–2060. Owing to the nonlinear aerosol-cloud interaction, the optimized emission reduction strategy limits the regional average increase in ERF aci of more than 0.89 W m −2 to less than 0.13 W m −2 in the short-term future during 2020–2040 and weakens the ERF aci increase by two-thirds in 2060 over China. These findings demonstrate the critical role of targeted emission control in mitigating short-term climate risks while pursuing air quality goals.

Surrogate-constructed scalable-circuits adaptive variational quantum eigensolver in the Schwinger model

Inspired by recent advancements in simulating periodic systems on quantum computers, we develop an approach to further advance the simulation of these systems, named (SC) 2 -ADAPT-VQE. Our approach extends the scalable-circuits ADAPT-VQE framework, which builds an ansatz from a pool of coordinate-invariant operators defined for arbitrarily large, though not arbitrarily small, volumes. Our method uses a classically tractable “surrogate constructed” method to remove irrelevant operators from the pool, reducing the minimum size for which the scalable circuits are defined. Bringing together the scalable circuits and the surrogate constructed approaches forms the core of the (SC) 2 methodology. Our approach allows for a wider set of classical computations on small volumes, which can be used for a more robust extrapolation protocol. While developed in the context of lattice models, the surrogate construction portion is applicable to a wide variety of problems where information about the relative importance of operators in the pool is available. As an example, we use it to compute the properties of the Schwinger model—quantum electrodynamics for a single, massive fermion in 1 +1 dimensions—and show that our method can be used to accurately extrapolate to the continuum limit.

A physically interpretable precursor framework for sub-seasonal prediction of Northern Hemisphere flash flourishing

Flash flourishing describes rapid vegetation increases that can quickly reshape land–atmosphere exchanges and impacts on ecosystem, yet its large-scale precursors, circulation context, and sub-seasonal predictability remain poorly understood. Here, we identified onset-stage circulation regimes across northern extratropical latitudes (NEL; >30°N) using 200 and 1000 hPa geopotential height, and examined their regional expressions over eastern Asia, western North America, and Europe. Flash flourishing onset in East Asian was associated with a baroclinic circulation regime and was preceded by a North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) precursor at a four-pentad lead. In contrast, onset in western North American and European preferentially occurred under barotropic regimes, preconditioned by Great Plains soil moisture at three-pentad lead and North Atlantic SST at a four-pentad lead, respectively. Ridge regression forecasts revealed regime-dependent sub-seasonal predictability, with mean out-of-sample R 2 exceeding 0.3 up to lead times of two pentads in East Asia, three pentads in western North America, and four pentads in Europe. Together, these findings established a mechanistic and regionally specific framework for anticipating rapid vegetation greening at sub-seasonal timescales.

Convergence of Cloud Droplet Spectral Relative Dispersion During Entrainment‐Mixing Based on Particle‐Resolved Direct Numerical Simulations

Entrainment-mixing processes critically impact cloud microphysical properties, but their effects on the relative dispersion (d) of cloud droplet size distributions (CDSDs) remain elusive. A direct numerical simulation model is initialized with different CDSDs to fill the gap. These results show that d decreases for broad CDSDs and increases for narrow ones, ultimately converging to approximately 0.5 regardless of initial CDSDs during the evaporation-dominated mixing stage. The supersaturation fluctuation and the shape of CDSDs jointly influence the convergence behavior of d. Further sensitivity tests show that the initial microphysical/dynamical/thermodynamical conditions exert negligible effects on the final converged value of d but affect the convergence rate (k). The k generally increases with increasing droplet number concentration and dissipation rate, and increases with decreasing liquid water content, relative humidity of entrained air, and mixing fraction of cloudy air. A conceptual model with two timescales is proposed; k and the timescales are negatively correlated, meaning that slow mixing and/or evaporation process results in slow convergence of d. In conclusion, this finding provides an important reference for improving understanding and parameterization of d during the entrainment-mixing processes.
