Prediction of the Thermal Runaway Limit and Optimal Operation of Heat Transfer-Limited, Fixed-Bed Reactor Systems

Here, we derive a new prediction for thermal runaway starting from the alpha model for fixed-bed reactor systems. This method accounts for thermal resistance internal to the reactor tube and the radial temperature gradients that result. To showcase our method, we compare its predictions to other common criteria for thermal runaway using o-xylene oxidation as the example chemistry. Even in systems where internal heat transfer is negligible, the empirical practical design criterion for thermal runaway is inaccurate. For cases where internal heat transfer is relevant, our runaway limit is more stringent than limits derived from simpler 1-D models. To augment our work, we optimize the product yield with the thermal runaway constraint using orthogonal collocation. Using the alpha model, the results illustrate that the thermal runaway limit can be accurately determined using either numerical or analytical methods.

Development of advanced diagnostic tools, models, and technoeconomic analyses for high-temperature heat transfer coefficient heat exchangers

This is a final technical report of a system designed to image fall particle receivers. High temperature heat is hard to store and move and using low cost materials, similar to sand, are ideal. However, particle-to-particle interactions can impact heat transfer mechanisms in these classes of materials. This report highlights our effects to utilize x-ray imaging to understand these dynamics.

Modeling District Heating and Cooling Systems with URBANopt, GeoJSON to Modelica Translator, and the Modelica Buildings Library

The URBANopt project has successfully leveraged OpenStudio/EnergyPlus to model buildings and electrical systems at an urban scale; however, URBANopt has lacked the ability to model district thermal energy systems until recently. This paper will present the modeling infrastructure that was developed specifically for the analysis of district heating and cooling systems, and how it is integrated into the existing URBANopt framework. The paper also discusses the development of new models added to the Modelica Buildings Library to model various district energy system components including loads, energy transfer stations (ETS), distribution networks, and central plants. The paper describes how different building loads can be modeled including time series, TEASER reduced-order models, or Spawn of EnergyPlus models. URBANopt District Energy Systems allows the user to switch between the various configurations.

The International Heat Stress Genotype Experiment for Modeling Wheat Response to Heat: Field Experiments and AgMIP-Wheat Multi-Model Simulations

The data set contains a portion of the International Heat Stress Genotype Experiment (IHSGE) data used in the AgMIP-Wheat project to analyze the uncertainty of 30 wheat crop models and quantify the impact of heat on global wheat yield productivity. It includes two spring wheat cultivars grown during two consecutive winter cropping cycles at hot, irrigated, and low latitude sites in Mexico (Ciudad Obregon and Tlaltizapan), Egypt (Aswan), India (Dharwar), the Sudan (Wad Medani), and Bangladesh (Dinajpur). Experiments in Mexico included normal (November-December) and late (January-March) sowing dates. Data include local daily weather data, soil characteristics and initial soil conditions, crop measurements (anthesis and maturity dates, anthesis and final total above ground biomass, final grain yields and yields components), and cultivar information. Simulations include both daily in-season and end-of-season results from 30 wheat models.
