SPRUCE Photosynthesis and Respiration of Picea mariana and Larix laricina in SPRUCE Experimental Plots, 2016-2017

This dataset contains empirical physiological, morphological, and chemical data collected on two dominant conifer species, Picea mariana and Larix laricina, between May 2016 and August 2017 at the SPRUCE (Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments) experimental site within the Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota, USA. Analyses assessed the response of conifers to whole-ecosystem warming and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. Measurements include light-saturated net photosynthesis and dark respiration at ambient atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration (2016), CO2 response curves of light-saturated net photosynthesis (2017), leaf morphology (leaf mass per unit leaf area) and nitrogen content (on both mass and area basis). Leaf photosynthesis and respiration were measured with portable photosynthesis systems (LI6400XT, LI6800, LI-COR Biosciences, USA). In 2016, photosynthesis and respiration were measured at a common temperature of 25 ˚C to assess thermal acclimation, and at growth temperatures (for each of the five treatment temperatures) to assess field performance. In 2017, CO2 response curves of net photosynthesis (so-called A-Ci curves) were conducted at different leaf temperatures (15, 25, 32.5, 40 and 45 ˚C) for assessment of biochemical parameters and their temperature sensitivity. In addition, dark respiration measurements at different leaf temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 ºC) were also taken. This dataset contains one data file in comma-separate values (*.csv) and Microsoft Excel (*.xlsx) format. Additional metadata are provided: a data dictionary and a file-level metadata file in comma-separate values (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

SPRUCE Outflow Chemistry Data for Experimental Plots Beginning in 2016

This data set includes the chemistry of outflow waters in the SPRUCE experiment plots located in the S1 bog of the USDA Forest Service Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in northern Minnesota, 40 km north of Grand Rapids. These data are post-treatment data from the warming and elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) treatments associated with the SPRUCE experiment. There are ten experimental plots in SPRUCE: five temperature treatments (+0, +2.25, +4.5, +6.75, +9°C) at ambient CO2, and the same five temperature treatments at elevated CO2 (+500 ppm). Sample collection and analyses started in March of 2016 and will continue for the duration of the experiment. Samples were analyzed for pH, specific conductivity, anion concentrations (chloride, sulfate), cation concentrations (calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, aluminum, iron, manganese, silicon, strontium), nutrient concentrations (ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus, total nitrogen, total phosphorus), and total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations. Subsets of the samples have been analyzed for natural-abundance stable isotopes of water (δ18O-H2O and δD-H2O), dissolved carbon dioxide (δ13C-CO2), and dissolved methane (δ13C-CH4), and concentrations of total mercury (Thg), methylmercury (MeHg), ferrous iron (Fe2+), ferric iron (Fe3+), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and dissolved methane (CH4).

Chloroform Fumigation Extraction for Microbial Biomass and Dissolved Organic Carbon from SPRUCE, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, 2021, 2022, and 2024

This data set provides the results for chloroform fumigation extraction (CFE) of peat samples collected from ambient and experimental plots in the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Environmental Change (SPRUCE) Experiment site in June and August of 2021, June of 2022, and June, August, and October of 2024. The SPRUCE Experiment site is in the Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota, USA. The data set includes values for microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved nitrogen (DN), moisture content (MC, available for 2021 and 2022 only) and gravimetric water content (GWC) at 11 depth increments of two-meter peat cores taken from 12 sampling sites at SPRUCE (10 temperature treatment enclosures, 2 ambient temperature treatment enclosures). The sample analysis followed standard methods. The samples were analyzed using a Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon/Nitrogen (TOC/N) analyzer (TOC-V and TOC-L; 2021-2022) or an Elementar vario TOC Cube (2024), liquid catalytic oxidation combustion analyzers for total carbon and nitrogen analysis. This dataset contains two data files in comma separate (.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: two data dictionaries and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

An entropy-based debiasing approach to quantifying experimental coverage for novel applications of interest in the nuclear community

This manuscript proposes a novel information-theoretic approach to the quantification of experimental relevance, i.e., coverage, to achieve optimal data assimilation results for nuclear engineering applications. Specifically, this work posits the need for a new metric, called coverage (q C ) of an application’s quantity of interest, i.e., eigenvalue or power peaking for an advanced reactor concept, defined herein as the theoretically maximum achievable reduction in the quantity’s uncertainty given measurements from a pool of experiments in a manner that is independent of the data assimilation procedure employed. Currently, reduction in a quantity’s uncertainty is strongly biased by the underlying assumptions of the assimilation procedure to account for the under-determined nature of such problems and the similarity criterion employed to identify relevant experiments. To address this challenge, this work has developed a coverage metric, q C , based on mutual information, which establishes a new conceptual framework for assessing coverage, one that is independent of the model parameters and responses degree of variations in both the experimental and application domains, i.e., linear vs non-linear, and their prior uncertainty distributions, i.e., Gaussian vs. non-Gaussian. The q C is an entropic measure capable of addressing coverage for general nonlinear problems with non-Gaussian uncertainties and inclusive of the measurement uncertainties from multiple experiments. Numerical experiments from manufactured analytical problems as well as a set of benchmarks from the ICSBEP handbook are employed to demonstrate its theoretical and practical performance as compared to the c k -based experiment selection methodology, commonly employed in the neutronic community. The manuscript then employs other well-known adaptations to existing data assimilation methodologies for nonlinear and non-Gaussian problems capable of achieving the coverage posited by q C .
