Tradeoffs in single stage drift step recovery diode generator design

A high-voltage generator of nanosecond pulses utilizing a drift step recovery diode (DSRD) as an opening switch in the compression section is designed to operate at peak voltages of 4 kV and repetition rates of 2 MHz in burst mode at reduced voltages. The generator is used to perform empirical studies on the output metrics of a DSRD generator with a focus on matching the circuit of the reverse current loop parameters and DSRD to the load. The dynamic impedance introduced by nonlinear elements in the DSRD was investigated with respect to the driving circuit by varying the number of DSRDs connected in series. Experimental results indicate that optimization of the driving circuit for the DSRD is key to minimizing losses and achieving optimal pulse compression. Furthermore, the results also indicate trends in DSRD performance as larger storage inductances and longer pumping times are used, limiting the pulse compression capabilities of a single stage DSRD generator.

Reliability Improvement and Effective Switching Layer Model of Thin-Film MoS 2 Memristors

2D memristors have demonstrated attractive resistive switching characteristics recently but also suffer from the reliability issue, which limits practical applications. Previous efforts on 2D memristors have primarily focused on exploring new material systems, while damage from the metallization step remains a practical concern for the reliability of 2D memristors. Here, the impact of metallization conditions and the thickness of MoS 2 films on the reliability and other device metrics of MoS 2 -based memristors is carefully studied. The statistical electrical measurements show that the reliability can be improved to 92% for yield and improved by ≈16× for average DC cycling endurance in the devices by reducing the top electrode (TE) deposition rate and increasing the thickness of MoS 2 films. Intriguing convergence of switching voltages and resistance ratio is revealed by the statistical analysis of experimental switching cycles. An “effective switching layer” model compatible with both monolayer and few-layer MoS 2 , is proposed to understand the reliability improvement related to the optimization of fabrication configuration and the convergence of switching metrics. In conclusion, the Monte Carlo simulations help illustrate the underlying physics of endurance failure associated with cluster formation and provide additional insight into endurance improvement with device fabrication optimization.

Wake up and retention in zinc magnesium oxide ferroelectric films

Zn 0.64 Mg 0.36 O (ZMO) is a newly discovered ferroelectric oxide with the wurtzite structure. Epitaxial Zn 0.64 Mg 0.36 O films from 0.036 to 0.5 μm in thickness are grown on Pt/sapphire with the crystallographic c-axis out of plane. At room temperature, the remanent polarization is ~80 μC/cm 2 and the coercive field is ~3 MV/cm. The coercive field is strongly temperature dependent up to 240 °C with a pseudo-activation energy of 23 ± 0.3 meV, suggesting that polarization reversal occurs through an extrinsic process such as domain wall motion. ZMO films can be woken up in 20 electric field cycles on driving near the coercive field; they wake up in a single loop at fields in excess of 4 MV/cm. A thermally activated fluid imprint process, with a pseudo-activation energy of 67 ± 8 meV, enlarges the coercive field by several hundred kV cm –1 after switching the polarization. Additionally, ZMO films exhibit excellent retention characteristics; no reduction in the polarization is observed up to 1000 h from room temperature to 200 °C bakes. Here, this current early generation of ZMO films can survive several thousand switching cycles before dielectric breakdown occurs.

A Minimum Principle-Based Algorithm for Energy-Efficient Eco-Driving of Electric Vehicles in Various Traffic and Road Conditions

Our report presents an optimization algorithm for energy-efficient driving of electric vehicles. The algorithm is based on Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle by considering the driving mission as an optimal control problem. On a planned route, diverse application cases may occur due to various physical traits such as powertrain (e.g., switching between motor and generator operation), environmental variations (e.g., terrain grade change), traffic laws (e.g., speed limits), and safety concerns (e.g., headway to the leading vehicle). The proposed algorithm handles these real-world challenges by considering the perturbation to the system dynamics and the constraints to the control and state variables.

Megavolt bremsstrahlung measurements from linear induction accelerators demonstrate possible use as a FLASH radiotherapy source to reduce acute toxicity

Abstract Recent studies indicate better efficacy and healthy tissue sparing with high dose-rate FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) cancer treatment. This technique delivers a prompt high radiation dose rather than fractional doses over time. While some suggest thresholds of > 40 Gy s −1 with a maximal effect at > 100 Gy s −1 , accumulated evidence shows that instantaneous dose-rate and irradiation time are critical. Mechanisms are still debated, but toxicity is minimized while inducing apoptosis in malignant tissue. Delivery technologies to date show that a capability gap exists with clinic scale, broad area, deep penetrating, high dose rate systems. Based on these trends, if FLASH-RT is adopted, it may become a dominant approach except in the least technologically advanced countries. The linear induction accelerator (LIA) developed for high instantaneous and high average dose-rate, species independent charged particle acceleration, has yet to be considered for this application. We review the status of LIA technology, explore the physics of bremsstrahlung-converter-target interactions and our work on stabilizing the electron beam. While the gradient of the LIA is low, we present our preliminary work to improve the gradient by an order of magnitude, presenting a point design for a multibeam FLASH-RT system using a single accelerator for application to conformal FLASH-RT.

Vanadium oxide coatings to self-regulate current sharing in high-temperature superconducting cables and magnets

High-temperature superconductors such as REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ (REBCO, RE = rare earth) enable high-current cables and high-field magnets. By removing the turn-to-turn insulation in a magnet application, recent experiments demonstrated that REBCO magnets can self-protect against catastrophic damage during a superconducting-to-normal transition (quench), i.e., when the stored magnetic energy rapidly converts to heat. The current can bypass the hot spot during a quench, thereby reducing the localized heat dissipation. The removal of the insulation between turns, however, leads to excessive eddy currents during current ramping, thereby forcing a much-prolonged magnet charging time. To address this issue, we investigate vanadium oxide (VO x ) coatings as a temperature-dependent self-switching medium that automatically manages current sharing. VO x coatings (with 1.70 ≤ × ≤ to 2.07) were deposited by reactive cathodic arc deposition, initially on insulating glass to determine the electrical properties, and later on commercial REBCO tapes. The coatings are x-ray amorphous but with a short-range crystalline ordering according to Raman spectrometry. The resistivity of VO x decreased by at least three orders of magnitude when the temperature increased from 80 to 300 K. The coating process is compatible with commercial REBCO tapes as evidenced by the negligible change in the critical current caused by the coating process. Here, the results from current sharing experiments and circuit analysis suggest that the VO x coating can effectively self-regulate current sharing in REBCO magnets, suppress excessive eddy currents, and enable self-protection during quenches.

Mechanisms enabling reconfigurability and long-term retention in vanadium oxide electrochemical memory

Phase coexistence in nanoscale electrochemical random-access memory (ECRAM) has recently been demonstrated to enable both information storage and extraordinary reconfigurability. These proof-of-principle demonstrations have left the mechanistic details of such a process unresolved. Particularly, the mechanisms that stabilize the multiple phases, and the underlying processes behind sustained memory retention, remain unclear, and are necessary to design such devices. Here we report microscale ECRAM devices composed of V⁢O𝑥, which enables us to directly probe the active region in an operando fashion using optical techniques. Using Raman mapping, we show the phase coexistence driven by the electrochemical injection of O vacancies to be spatially uniform (i.e., with no filaments). The stability was observed to be unusually long, with 1% loss over 14 years in ambient conditions. First-principles calculations of the oxygen vacancy formation energies in V⁢O 𝑥 further support the thermodynamic coexistence of multiple V⁢O 𝑥 phases and clarify the origin of the observed long-term retention in the ECRAM devices. Further, we demonstrate single devices that can be voltage programmed to exhibit synaptic, neuronal, and reconfigurable logic gate functionalities. Furthermore, we not only uncover the phase coexistence mechanism that may help device design, but also demonstrate the circuit-level applications of reconfigurability.

Fluxbranes, generalized symmetries, and Verlinde’s metastable monopole

The stringy realization of generalized symmetry operators involves wrapping “branes at infinity”. We argue that in the case of continuous (as opposed to discrete) symmetries, the appropriate objects are fluxbranes. We use this perspective to revisit the phase structure of Verlinde’s monopole, a proposed particle satisfies the Bogomol’nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) condition when gravity is decoupled, but is non-BPS and metastable when gravity is switched on. Geometrically, this monopole is obtained from branes wrapped on locally stable but globally trivial cycles of a compactification geometry. The fluxbrane picture allows us to characterize electric (respectively magnetic) confinement (respectively screening) in the 4D theory as a result of monopole decay. In the presence of the fluxbrane, this decay also creates lower-dimensional fluxbranes, which in the field theory is interpreted as the creation of an additional topological field theory sector. Monolithic optoelectronic circuit design for on-chip terahertz applications

We demonstrate a monolithic coplanar stripline platform for on-chip terahertz (THz) generation, transmission, and detection, addressing key challenges of mode purity, bandwidth, and referencing. Capacitive coupling of the photoconductive generator switch enforces pure odd-mode propagation, increases THz field strength, and extends the operational frequency range, achieving 0.05–1.4 THz. Our architecture enables fully monolithic fabrication with amorphous silicon switches, in situ field referencing, and galvanic isolation between generation and detection. Finite-element simulations and experiments confirm that suppressing parasitic modes improves signal integrity, providing a robust platform for high-fidelity THz spectroscopy, ultrafast electronics, and nanoscale quantum materials research.

Hybrid Hydraulic-Electric Architecture (HHEA) for Mobile Machines (Final Report)

Traditionally, off-road mobile machines such as excavators and wheel loaders are primarily powered by hydraulics, and throttling valves are used to control their work circuits. In recent years, two general trends are towards more energy efficient systems and electrification. With electrification, both efficiency and control performance can be improved by the elimination of throttling losses and the use of high-bandwidth inverter control. Electrification is generally accomplished with Electro-hydraulic actuators (EHA) but they are limited to lower powered systems due to the high cost of electric machines capable of high power or high torque. This project proposes a new system architecture for off-road vehicles - Hybrid Hydraulic Electric Architecture (HHEA) to improve efficiency and control performance without requiring large electric machines. The widely applicable architecture combines hydraulic power and electric power in such a way that the majority of power is provided hydraulically while electric drives are used to modulate this power. In particular, HHEA utilizes multiple common pressure rails to transmit the majority of power and small electric machines to modulate the power. The energy-saving potential of the the HHEA has been validated for the work circuits of a variety of mobile machines, from small 5-ton excavators to medium sized 20-ton excavators and wheel loaders, and representative duty cycles to reduce energy input by 50-80% compared to the commercial state-of-art load-sensing systems. In addition, the corner power requirements of the electrical machines can be downsized by 85% compared to the EHA approach. Various tradeoff studies have also been conducted, including sensitivities to individual components performances, controllers, accumulator sizes, and variations of the system architecture etc. A control strategy has been developed to maintain or exceed the motion control precision compared to current systems. The motion control strategy consists of a nominal controller, based on a passivity-based backstepping design, and a transition controller, based on least-norn feedforward design. The nominal controller is used in between common pressure rail switches whereas the transition controller compensates for any disturbance that common pressure rail switchings inflict on the system. The control strategy has been experimentally validated on both a medium pressure (200bar) hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbed and a high pressure (300+bar) HIL testbed. An efficient and power-dense integrated electric-hydraulic machine consisting of an axial flux electric machine and a radial hydrostatic piston hydraulic machine has been designed, constructed and tested. The machine has an active material power density of 6.1kW/kg, a rated speed of 12500 RPM, and a design efficiency of 85%. This is among the highest power density electric machines using conventional materials. While the integrated machine was designed for modulating the hydraulic power within the HHEA, it can also be used in other applications.

Influence of dislocations and twin walls in BaTiO 3 on the voltage-controlled switching of perpendicular magnetization

In this work, we investigate the influence of dislocations and twin walls in BaTiO 3 on its ferroelectric response and the resulting effect on the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of a strain-coupled [Co\Ni] n film. A dense twinned structure in conjunction with a high dislocation density significantly reduces the converse piezoelectric effect of BaTiO 3 by hindering the propagation of newly nucleated domains with an applied electric field. This, in turn, results in a modest reduction of the PMA of the ferromagnetic layer. On the other hand, the ferroelectric polarization reorients from [100] to [001] direction in a dislocation-free BaTiO 3 , inducing the maximum achievable in-plane compressive strain of 1.1%. A large fraction of this uniaxial strain is transferred to the magnetoelastically coupled ferromagnetic layers whose magnetization switches to in plane via the inverse magnetostriction effect. This work reveals the critical role of the interplay between twin walls and dislocations within a ferroelectric substrate in the performance of multiferroic heterostructures and provides insight into the development of highly energy-efficient magnetoelectric devices.

Ferroelectric Switching in Hybrid Molecular-Beam-Epitaxy-Grown BaTiO 3 Films

Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is a promising synthesis technique for both heterostructure growth and epitaxial integration of ferroelectric BaTiO 3 . However, direct measurement of the remnant polarization (P r ) has not been previously reported in MBE-grown BaTiO 3 films. We report the in situ growth of an all-epitaxial SrRuO 3 /BaTiO 3 /SrRuO 3 heterostructure on Nb-doped SrTiO 3 (001) substrates by hybrid MBE using metal–organic precursors. This capacitor structure consisting of 16 nm SrRuO 3 /40 nm BaTiO 3 /16 nm SrRuO 3 shows hysteretic polarization–electric field (P–E) curves with P r ∼ 15 μC cm –2 at frequencies ranging from 500 Hz to 20 kHz, after isolating the intrinsic ferroelectric response from non-ferroelectric contributions using the Positive-Up-Negative-Down (PUND) method. We hypothesize that the asymmetry in switching behavior and current leakage has origins in structural defects. Furthermore, this work opens the door to defect-engineered ferroelectric BaTiO 3 -based heterostructures grown by hybrid MBE for future electronic, photonic and spintronic applications.

Switching between Magnetic Bloch and Néel Domain Walls with Anisotropy Modulations

It has been shown previously that the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in perpendicularly magnetized thin films stabilizes N\'eel type domain walls. We demonstrate, using micromagnetic simulations and analytical modeling, that the presence of a uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy can also lead to the formation of N\'eel walls in the absence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. It is possible to abruptly switch between Bloch and N\'eel walls via a small modulation of both the in-plane, but also the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This opens up a route towards electric field control of the domain wall type with small applied voltages through electric field controlled anisotropies.

Heating system with induction power supply and electromagnetic acoustic transducer with induction power supply

A system for heating a fluid and an electromagnetic acoustic transducer EMAT system is provided. Both systems have a drive circuit. The amount of heat and the amplitude (and acceleration) of the vibrations is respectively controllable by controlling an input to a terminal of a switch. The heating system comprises a porous graphite foam conductor which is exposed to an electromagnetic field generated by an oscillating circuit. When exposed, the foam conductor conducts induced electric current which heats the same and a fluid in contact with the conductor. The EMAT system comprises at least one magnet configured to generate a static magnetic field, an oscillating circuit and a working element. The working element, when exposed to the static magnetic field and the electromagnetic field produced by the oscillating circuit, vibrates against a load. The vibrations dry the load.

Evaluation of Fe-βGa 2 O 3 for Photoconductive Semiconductor Switching

We present iron-doped beta gallium oxide (Fe- β Ga2O3) as a candidate for photoconductive semiconductor switches (PCSSs) with sub-bandgap light. From a commercially available Fe- β Ga2O3 wafer, we first did material characterization. This included measurements of absorption coefficient and dopant composition, carrier activation energy up to 200 °C, break down field of planar electrodes (limited from material passivation), and free carrier recombination lifetime, and thermal effects up to 203 °C on photocurrent with a 447 nm light emitting diode (LED) source. Here, we then demonstrated pulsed operation of a Fe- β Ga2O3 PCSS under different sub-bandgap wavelengths (355, 532, and 1064 nm) and sub-ns pulses. Fe- β Ga2O3 is a candidate for high temperature PCSS with 355 nm responsivity of 7×10 -7 A-cm/W-kV at room temperature and up to 5.5×10 -4 A-cm/W-kV at 200 °C. From these investigations, we discuss a simple trap model to describe the illumination process of the PCSS. Fe- β Ga2O3 has a high breakdown field and has moderate responsivity characteristics, but the dark current at high temperature leads to low photo-to-dark current ratio (PDCR). Regardless, we verify its potential as a PCSS material for harsh environment applications.

A 75 kVA Intelligent Power Stages (IPS) Unit Design for Future Grid-interface Application

The demand for grid-interface converter with flexible dc bus is driven by the fast development of energy storage system (ESS), electric vehicle (EV) charging system, and versatile residential load. This paper first proposes a two-stage intelligent power stage (IPS) unit for future grid-interface applications. To achieve zero common-mode (CM) voltage emissions, step-up and step-down voltage gain, a 3-level four-switch buck-boost (3-L FSBB) dc-dc converter is adopted with fully zero voltage switching (ZVS). In one IPS unit, an advanced fiberoptic communication with sub-nanosecond synchronization is developed for different enhanced gate drivers. Moreover, an enhanced gate driver integrated current and voltage sensors is designed for monitoring and diagnostics. To achieve a whole low-profile design, three 12 oz heavy copper planar ac inductors are designed and implemented. Finally, a 75 kVA IPS unit was built to verify both the thermal and electrical design.

Spin-orbit–driven ferromagnetism at half moiré filling in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can have a profound influence on the electronic properties of materials. We examined their combined influence on a two-dimensional electronic system at the atomic interface between magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene and a tungsten diselenide crystal. We found that strong electron correlation within the moiré flatband stabilizes correlated insulating states at both quarter and half filling, and that SOC transforms these Mott-like insulators into ferromagnets, as evidenced by a robust anomalous Hall effect with hysteretic switching behavior. The coupling between spin and valley degrees of freedom could be demonstrated through control of the magnetic order with an in-plane magnetic field or a perpendicular electric field. Our findings establish an experimental knob to engineer topological properties of moiré bands in twisted bilayer graphene and related systems.

Performance and Durability of Proton Exchange Membrane Vapor-Fed Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cells

With a growing demand for electricity, clean hydrogen production and usage can be an asset not only to mitigate emissions but for long-term energy storage as well. Hydrogen gas, a high-density energy carrier, can be made through electrolysis in charging mode and generate electricity via a fuel cell in discharging mode in a unitized regenerative fuel cell (URFC). While URFCs reduce cost by combining the charging and discharging modes into a singular device, switching between modes becomes burdensome, and water management is a major challenge. One way to mitigate these issues is to operate the entire system in the vapor phase. Vapor-phase operation simplifies the physics of the system but will introduce losses within the system, primarily ohmic and mass transport during the charging mode. In this study, we explore the performance of a Proton-Exchange-Membrane (PEM)-URFC under vapor-phase conditions and the impact of different PEMs, feed gases, and relative humidity on the performance and durability. By tailoring operating conditions and membrane, the vapor-URFC achieves a roundtrip efficiency of 42% and a lifetime of 50,000 accelerated stress test cycles for fully humidified feeds. Discussion of vapor-URFC for energy storage and extensions to look at various applications shows the promise of this technology.
