Robustly optimal rate one-half binary convolutional codes

Three optimality criteria for convolutional codes are considered in this correspondence: namely, free distance, minimum distance, and distance profile. Here we report the results of computer searches for rate one-half binary convolutional codes that are 'robustly optimal' in the sense of being optimal for one criterion and optimal or near-optimal for the other two criteria. Comparisons with previously known codes are made. The results of a computer simulation are reported to show the importance of the distance profile to computational performance with sequential decoding.

The Verification and Validation of a Magnetic Plasma Fluid Model Utilizing the MOOSE (Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment) Framework

As the goal of achieving fusion power on the grid comes closer to fruition, fully coupled multiphysics models of fusion devices will be crucial. Currently, there are two main approaches to developing these platforms: (1) loosely coupled, where one couples existing codes and solvers together through input and output parameters and data, and (2) tightly coupled, where one develops the necessary models within a singular, integrated framework. This work focuses on the latter approach for magnetically confined fusion devices by developing a fluid-based plasma-edge model within the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) Framework. This effort is coordinated with other efforts to develop, test, demonstrate, and deploy fusion relevant multiphysics capabilities including electromagnetics, particle-in-cell plasma, tritium transport, and fusion blanket design. This new model is an expansion of the MOOSE-based plasma application, Zapdos, which was originally formulated to model low-temperature, non-magnetized plasma processes. Verification, benchmarking, and validation studies have been conducted. Verification studies involved utilizing the method of manufactured solutions and comparing the convergence slope of a known solution to the theoretical slope. Benchmarking consists of comparisons to existing edge codes, namely BOUT++ and SOLEDGE3X. Validation efforts focused on comparisons against open-source data from the TCV tokamak.

METCAN updates for high temperature composite behavior: Simulation/verification

The continued verification (comparisons with experimental data) of the METCAN (Metal Matrix Composite Analyzer) computer code is updated. Verification includes comparisons at room and high temperatures for two composites, SiC/Ti-15-3 and SiC/Ti-6-4. Specifically, verification of the SiC/Ti-15-3 composite includes comparisons of strength, modulus, and Poisson's ratio as well as stress-strain curves for four laminates at room temperature. High temperature verification includes comparisons of strength and stress-strain curves for two laminates. Verification of SiC/Ti-6-4 is for a transverse room temperature stress-strain curve and comparisons for transverse strength at three temperatures. Results of the verification indicates that METCAN can be used with confidence to simulate the high temperature nonlinear behavior of metal matrix composites.

Sierra/SolidMechanics Verification Report

This document presents the Sierra/SolidMechanics (Sierra/SM) verification plan. This plan centers on the tests in the Sierra/SM verification test suite, a subset of which are documented in the Sierra/SM Verification Tests Manual. Most of these tests are run nightly with the Sierra/SM code suite, and the results of the tests are checked against analytic solutions. For each of the tests presented in the Verification Tests Manual, the test setup, a description of the analytic solution, and comparison of the Sierra/SM code results to the analytic solution is provided. Mesh convergence is also checked on a nightly basis for several of these tests. This verification plan discusses these various types of tests and what they mean for Sierra/SM verification. Many other activities also contribute to Sierra/SM quality. These address code and solution quality and range from low-level unit tests, run nightly, up to full-fidelity acceptance tests, used to verify release stability. This acceptance test suite checks that new versions of Sierra/SM continue to yield the same answers for high-resolution analyst problems. Further code quality measures include an extensive suite of intermediate-size regression tests and automated nightly code quality checks. While these additional activities do not fall under a strict definition of verification, they greatly add to the quality, stability, and reliability of Sierra/SM, and are discussed here as well.
