Measurements of nitric oxide after a nuclear burst

Measurements of ozone and nitric oxide in a nuclear cloud 7 days after the explosion are reported. No measurable increase above ambient density of either ozone or nitric oxide was found. Results from a chemistry model of the cloud do not agree with the measurement unless 'nonstandard' assumptions are made with regard to the operating chemical processes. A number of possible explanations of the results are discussed.

Mechanical aggregation of enstatite chondrites from an inhomogeneous debris cloud

Enstatite chondrites have oxygen isotope ratios closer to those of the earth and moon than other meteorites. Their minerals are chemically reduced; metal contains Si, and some Ca, Ti, Mg and Mn are incorporated in sulphides rather than silicates. Clinoenstatite and olivine are virtually Fe-free. Two types of clinoenstatite in the Indarch enstatite chondrite have been reported, one luminescing blue and one red. Similar clinoenstatites in the Kota-Kota enstatite chondrite are associated with two distinct types of forsteritic olivine, one luminescing orange and the other blue. The textural relations and differences in chemical composition cannot be explained by progressive condensation from the solar nebula and require the mechanical mixing of material from at least two sources. It is suggested here that enstatite chondrites result from mechanical and chemical processes during aerodynamic sorting and gravitational settling of debris from a hot cloud of dust, liquid and gas produced during collision of planetesimals.

Recent work on use of lunar materials for SPS construction

The feasibility of mounting a small operation on the Moon to productively use lunar materials in support of programs such as the solar power satellite is addressed. A cost effective scenario of a small chemical process plant on the surface of the Moon and a small machine shop located in orbit is presented. The mass of the space installation is compared to the projected outputs in 90 days. It is indicated that the system would have the capability of replicating about 90% of its own components and would provide the metals, glasses, and silicon needed for the contruction of 90% to 96% of the mass of one solar power satellite per year.

Atmospheric methane /CH4/ - Trends and seasonal cycles

On the basis of 22 months of almost continuous automated, GC/FID measurements of atmospheric CH4 and Cape Meares (45 deg N), it is shown that the concentration of CH4 is increasing at about 2% per yr (+ or - 0.5%/yr). The data also revealed stable seasonal cycles with peak concentrations in October and minimum concentrations in July. The magnitude of the seasonal variations during these months is about + or - 20 ppby from the average (+ or - 1.2%). If the current trend continues, the increased CH4 concentration may result in a 0.2 K to 0.4 K average increase in earth's surface temperature over the next 40 years or so (based on calculations of Wang et al. (1976)). The coupling of CH4 to tropospheric and stratospheric chemical processes is discussed.

AE aeronomy studies

Chemical processes in the thermosphere and ionosphere using AE data were studied. These data were analyzed and interpreted in such a way as to verify and correct laboratory measured rate coefficients, obtain values for rate coefficients not measured in the laboratory, and to reveal and correct inadequacies in existing models of thermospheric chemistry. This activity stimulated new work in the laboratory measurement of rate coefficients by revealing errors in existing measurements and by suggesting new measurements that need to be made.

Research in space physics at the University of Iowa, 1982

The energetic particles and the electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields associated with the Earth, the Sun, the Moon, the planets, comets, and the interplanetary medium are examined. Matters under current investigation are following: energetic particles trapped in the Earth's magnetic field, origin and propagation of very low frequency radio waves and electrostatic, the magnetospheres of Jupiter, Saturn and prospectively Uranus and Neptune, diffusion of energetic particles in Saturn's magnetosphere, radio emissions from Jupiter and Saturn, solar modulation and the heliocentric radial dependence of the intensity of galactic cosmic rays, interplanetary propagation and acceleration of energetic particles, the theory of wave phenomena in turbulent plasmas, and basic wave-particle-chemical processes in the ionospheric plasma.

A degree of controllability definition - Fundamental concepts and application to modal systems

Starting from basic physical considerations, this paper develops a concept of the degree of controllability of a control system, and then develops numerical methods to generate approximate values of the degree of controllability for any linear time-invariant system. In many problems, such as the control of future, very large, flexible spacecraft and certain chemical process control problems, the question of how to choose the number and locations of the control system actuators is an important one. The results obtained here offer the control system designer a tool which allows him to rank the effectiveness of alternative actuator distributions, and hence to choose the actuator locations on a rational basis. The degree of controllability is shown to take a particularly simple form when the dynamic equations of a satellite are in second-order modal form. The degree of controllability concept has still other fundamental uses - it allows one to study the system structural relations between the various inputs and outputs of a linear system, which has applications to decoupling and model reduction.

The vertical distribution of ozone in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere

An assessment is made of the ability of current theory to explain the phenomenology of upper atmospheric ozone as revealed by the sizeable body of measurements presently available. The chemical processes affecting the vertical distribution of ozone are reviewed, and simple analytical expressions for the ozone concentrations at different altitudes are derived which approximate the key elements of the ozone chemistry. These equations provide simple explanations of the sensitivity of model computations to the choice of rate constants and climatological patterns. Model calculations are compared with a detailed measurement of an ozone profile, and the model is modified to assess the variation in ozone expected to result from perturbations in key climatological processes. These predictions are then compared with the variability observed in midlatitude measurements in order to verify the model description of ozone processes in the upper atmosphere.

Cyanide and isocyanide abundances in the cold, dark cloud TMC-1

Cold, dark molecular clouds are particularly useful for the study of interstellar chemistry because their physical parameters are better understood than those of heterogeneous, complex giant molecular clouds. Another advantage is their relatively small distance from the solar system. The present investigaation has the objective to provide accurate abundance ratios for several cyanides and isocyanides in order to constrain models of dark cloud chemistry. The relative abundances of such related species can be particularly useful for the study of chemical processes. The cloud TMC-1 considered in the current study has a remarkably high abundance of acetylene and polyacetylene derivatives. Data at 3 mm, corresponding to the J = 1 to 0 transitions of HCN, H(C-13)N, HN(C-13), HC(N-15), and H(N-15)C were obtained.

Aeronomy

From the known composition (H2, CH4, C2H2(?) at Uranus, and H2, CH4, C2H6 at Neptune) and the inversion and photolysis region temperatures, reasonable theoretical models for the upper atmospheric distribution of the neutral and ionospheric species are constructed on the basis of the expected physical and chemical processes. The models indicate that C2H2 would condense over an extensive height range of Uranus. The extent of the haze is expected to be smaller and deeper in the polar region. Some ethane is also expected to condense, mostly in the vicinity of the temperature inversion. The behavior of the acetylene condensation with latitude and time appears to be consistent with its apparent abundance variation (detected by IUE), and the brightening of Uranus observed in ground based imaging. Neptune's polar region, on the other hand is expected to be more hazy or cloudy than the equatorial region.

A spectacular nitrogen isotope anomaly in Bencubbin

Results of isotopic measurements on an unusual stony-iron meteorite named Bencubbin, which was found in Western Australia in 1930, are reported. Nitrogen from both the metallic and stony parts of the Bencubbin meteorite was analyzed, and in both materials large excesses of (15)N were found, resulting in values of the (14)N/(15)N abundance ratios as low as 137. That is, (15)N is enriched in Bencubbin by about a factor of two relative to terrestrial nitrogen. This is the largest (15)N enrichment of any known natural material. The effect is so large that chemical processes are probably inadequate to account for it. Nuclear processes which may be responsible for the anomalous isotope abundance are discussed.

Producing Large-Particle Monodisperse Latexes

Chemical process produces latex particles of relatively large, uniform size for use as size standards for instrument calibration. Process, based on seeding of mixture by very small latex particles, yields particles measuring 2 to 30 micrometer or more in average size. Produces monodisperse latexes in which deviation from average size is less than 2 percent. Particles used directly, without tedious separation procedures for removing off-size particles.

Improved Orifice Plate for Spray Gun

Erratic spray pattern of commercial spray gun changed to repeatable one by simple redesign of two parts. In modified spray gun orifice plate and polytetrafluoroethylene bushing redesigned to assure centering and alignment with nozzle. Such improvement useful in many industrial applications requiring repeatable spray patterns. Might include spraying of foam insulation, paint, other protective coatings, detergents, abrasives, adhesives, process chemicals, or fuels. Unmodified spray gun produces erratic spray because lateral misalignment between orifice plate and nozzle.

Studies of extended planetary atmospheres

There was a theoretical study of physical and chemical processes in the stratosphere, later broadened to include the mesosphere. Particular emphasis was laid on testing of proposed height profiles of the eddy diffusion coefficient against observed tracer data. Eventually the effort shifted to study of ozone time series in satellite data, and interpretation in terms of aeronomical processes. Since all this work is computer-intensive, the first year of funding also contributed to the acquisition of a powerful minicomputer system, in collaboration with several other faculty members. This proved to be highly successful and cost effective.
