A cell-centered AMR-ALE framework for 3D multi-material hydrodynamics. Part I: Lagrangian and indirect Euler AMR algorithms

Many applications of physics and engineering involve wide ranges of time and spatial scales. The numerical simulation of localized small scales such as shock waves and material interfaces requires a large number of computational cells in these regions. For these applications, Lagrangian and Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) related methods are engaging since the moving mesh feature naturally brings mesh cells on shock discontinuities and material interfaces are carefully captured. In addition, Adaptive-Mesh-Refinement (AMR) strategies aim to optimize computational resources by concentrating finer mesh cells only in areas of interest while using coarser cells elsewhere. A key but challenging AMR requirement consists in efficiently distributing the computational effort to achieve high accuracy without the prohibitive computational costs associated with uniformly fine grids. Here, in this document, the coupling of the p4est AMR library with a cell-centered Lagrangian scheme is presented with the goal to perform reliable 3D Lagrangian-AMR and indirect Euler-AMR multi-material simulations. In particular, it is shown that starting from a 3D indirect ALE code, the memory management and load balancing requirements can be delegated to an external library (here the p4est library) to unlock ALE-AMR capabilities. First, we present a strategy to transcribe the octant-based connectivity of the 3D AMR framework with that of an unstructured mesh of polygonal cells used in Lagrangian hydrodynamics. Then, we show how refinement and coarsening operations must be adapted to the particular Lagrangian framework to ensure the conservation of volume during those steps. Finally, several numerical test cases are presented that demonstrate the capabilities of the Lagrangian-AMR and indirect Euler-AMR algorithms.

Resonant scattering at the center of the galaxy cluster PKS 0745-191 with XRISM

We report evidence of the resonant scattering effect at the center of the galaxy cluster PKS 0745-191 with XRISM. We analyzed XRISM/Resolve commissioning-phase observations of the distant cluster PKS 0745-191 ($z = 0.103$) with a $54$ ks exposure. The gain drift was corrected using the onboard modulated X-ray source (MXS), and spectra were extracted from all the pixels that were well illuminated by MXS, the core region (four central pixels, $\sim$100 kpc), and the surrounding region. A single-temperature collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE) model fits the full field-of-view spectrum with $kT \approx 6$ keV and a turbulent velocity of ${\approx}120$ km s$^{-1}$. From the core ($r < 50$ kpc) spectrum, we detected a ${\approx}22\%$ suppression of the Fe xxv He$\alpha$ resonance (w) line relative to the CIE prediction. We performed a Monte Carlo simulation to calculate the resonant scattering (RS) effect using radial profiles from Chandra data. The RS-inferred turbulence agrees with that by Resolve line-broadening, demonstrating that RS provides an independent and consistent constraint on ICM turbulence. These results highlight XRISM/Resolve’s potential for turbulence studies in galaxy clusters.

Experimental determination of energy-level structures of diamond silicon-vacancy centers in off-axis magnetic fields

Here, we report the development of an experimental approach to efficiently determine the energy level structure of an individual silicon vacancy (SiV) center in a magnetic field along an arbitrary direction. This approach uses two coupling rates (one each for the ground and the excited states) to characterize the combined effects of static strain and dynamic Jahn-Teller coupling and exploits the fact that orbital Zeeman effects vanish when the magnetic field is normal to the SiV axis. With an analytical expression for the energy level structure of the SiV under a transverse magnetic field, the two coupling rates can be directly derived from two measurements: one on the frequency separation between two spin-conserved transitions and the other on the coherent population trapping resonance of the SiV ground spin states. A detailed comparison between the numerical calculation and the experimental result on the dependence of the spin-conserved splitting on both the amplitude and direction of the magnetic field further reveals unequal orbital magnetic coupling for the ground and excited states, indicating that unequal orbital quenching factors are needed for an accurate description of the SiV energy level structure in a magnetic field.

Oppenheimer Study Center Solar Analysis

The thermal solar array on the roof of the Oppenheimer Study Center (03-0207) has been defunct and aging progressively worse for years. This study set out to investigate the current state of the abandoned solar array, its various connected systems, and the viability of replacing the array with modern PV panels. This will help offset the energy usage of the building and bring the building in line with upcoming LANL goals of electrification and net-zero emissions (Exec. Order 14057, Sec. 201-5). This study is intended to be a high level, over-the-shoulder, analysis of impact and feasibility, and shall not be considered as an approved design. Further detailed design and analysis will be necessary beyond the concept feasibility phase of this project.

Photo‐Induced Charge State Dynamics of the Neutral and Negatively Charged Silicon Vacancy Centers in Room‐Temperature Diamond

Abstract The silicon vacancy (SiV) center in diamond is drawing much attention due to its optical and spin properties, attractive for quantum information processing and sensing. Comparatively little is known, however, about the dynamics governing SiV charge state interconversion mainly due to challenges associated with generating, stabilizing, and characterizing all possible charge states, particularly at room temperature. Here, multi‐color confocal microscopy and density functional theory are used to examine photo‐induced SiV recombination — from neutral, to single‐, to double‐negatively charged — over a broad spectral window in chemical‐vapor‐deposition (CVD) diamond under ambient conditions. For the SiV 0 to SiV ‐ transition, a linear growth of the photo‐recombination rate with laser power at all observed wavelengths is found, a hallmark of single photon dynamics. Laser excitation of SiV ‒ , on the other hand, yields only fractional recombination into SiV 2‒ , a finding that is interpreted in terms of a photo‐activated electron tunneling process from proximal nitrogen atoms.

Modeling of Radiative Emission from Shallow Color Centers in Single Crystalline Diamond

Optically active defects in diamond are widely used as bright single-photon sources for quantum sensing, computing, and communication. For many applications, it is useful to place the emitter close to the diamond surface, where the radiative properties of the emitter are strongly modified by its dielectric environment. It is well-known that the radiative power from an electric dipole decreases as the emitter approaches an interface with a lower-index dielectric, leading to an increase in the radiative lifetime. For emitters in crystalline solids, modeling of this effect needs to take into account the crystal orientation and direction of the surface cut, which can greatly impact the emission characteristics. In this paper, a framework for analyzing the emission rates of shallow (<100 nm) defects is provided, in which optical transitions are derived from electric dipoles in a plane perpendicular to their spin axis. The calculations for the depth-dependent radiative lifetime for color centers in (100)-, (110)-, and (111)-cut diamond are presented, which can be extended to other vacancy defects in diamond.

Science of the Van Allen Probes Science Operations Centers

The Van Allen Probes mission operations materialized through a distributed model in which operational responsibility was divided between the Mission Operations Center (MOC) and separate instrument specific SOCs. The sole MOC handled all aspects of telemetering and receiving tasks as well as certain scientifically relevant ancillary tasks. Each instrument science team developed individual instrument specific SOCs proficient in unique capabilities in support of science data acquisition, data processing, instrument performance, and tools for the instrument team scientists. In parallel activities, project scientists took on the task of providing a significant modeling tool base usable by the instrument science teams and the larger scientific community. With a mission as complex as Van Allen Probes, scientific inquiry occurred due to constant and significant collaboration between the SOCs and in concert with the project science team. Planned cross-instrument coordinated observations resulted in critical discoveries during the seven-year mission. Instrument cross-calibration activities elucidated a more seamless set of data products. Specific topics include post-launch changes and enhancements to the SOCs, discussion of coordination activities between the SOCs, SOC specific analysis software, modeling software provided by the Van Allen Probes project, and a section on lessons learned. One of the most significant lessons learned was the importance of the original decision to implement individual team SOCs providing timely and well-documented instrument data for the NASA Van Allen Probes Mission scientists and the larger magnetospheric and radiation belt scientific community.

3D Cell-centered hydrodynamics with subscale closure model and multi-material remap

We extend a higher-order finite volume cell-centered hydrodynamic (CCH) formulation to include an interface-aware subscale closure model and a multi-material remap for simulating 3D compressible hydrodynamic problems within an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. This CCH formulation involves a multidirectional approximate Riemann solution using quadratic polynomial reconstructions of the stress tensor and the velocity. At the subscale level, we determine pair-wise material interactions by solving a distinct approximate Riemann problem at the common interface, using the volume of fluids (VOF) method to find the interface. Material interactions are constrained to ensure smooth pressure equilibration among materials. The accuracy and robustness of the ALE method is demonstrated by simulating a suite of 3D Cartesian multi-material problems covering both gas and solid dynamics, where each test case has two or more materials.

A hybrid nodal-staggered pseudo-spectral electromagnetic particle-in-cell method with finite-order centering

Electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) codes are widely used to perform computer simulations of a variety of physical systems, including fusion plasmas, astrophysical plasmas, plasma wakefield particle accelerators, and secondary photon sources driven by ultra-intense lasers. In a PIC code, Maxwell's equations are solved on a grid with a numerical method of choice. This article focuses on pseudo-spectral analytical time-domain (PSATD) algorithms and presents a novel hybrid PSATD PIC scheme that combines the respective advantages of standard nodal and staggered methods. The novelty of the hybrid scheme consists in using finite-order centering of grid quantities between nodal and staggered grids, in order to combine the solution of Maxwell's equations on a staggered grid with the deposition of charges and currents and the gathering of electromagnetic forces on a nodal grid. The correctness and performance of the novel hybrid scheme are assessed by means of numerical tests that employ different classes of PSATD equations in a variety of physical scenarios, ranging from the modeling of electron-positron pair creation in vacuum to the simulation of laser-driven and particle beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. It is shown that the novel hybrid scheme offers significant numerical and computational advantages, compared to purely nodal or staggered methods, for all the test cases presented.

Analysis of US Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs) implementation

Industrial energy assessments are a fundamental action toward developing a decarbonization strategy at any level. They provide an understanding of where energy efficiency opportunities exist and help to make informed business decisions about the costs and benefits of implementing sustainable policies and practices. This paper examines the effectiveness of the Department of Energy's Industrial Assessment Centers Program at providing useful energy-efficiency audits as well as the barriers faced by the program and plans for future growth and improvement. This paper presents an analysis of the program between 1981 and 2022, covering 20,290 industrial assessments and 151,198 recommendations, with $2.6 billion of recommended savings. The analysis includes a breakdown of the IAC recommendations and implemented projects based on both the industrial subsectors according to the Standard Industrial Classification code, energy type, and systems evaluated. The results include a 47 % implementation rate, a gap analysis to understand the missed opportunities, and a discussion about reasons for recommendation rejection. A comparison of the IAC Program with other country-level energy auditing or assessment programs was conducted, and suggestions for improving implementation rates were mentioned.
