PyGDH: Python Grid Discretization Helper

Mathematical models expressed in the form of discretized equations play an important role inmany scientific disciplines. In our experience, few domain scientists have sufficient backgroundin numerical computing (or the time required to acquire such a background) to use manyflexible and powerful but complex open source packages, such as FEniCS (Alnæs et al., 2015)and OpenFOAM (The OpenFOAM Foundation Ltd, n.d.). Many user-friendly open sourcepackages, such as FiPy (J. E. Guyer & Warren, 2009), and many commercial packages, suchas COMSOL Multiphysics (COMSOL AB, n.d.) and Simcenter STAR-CCM+ (Siemens DigitalIndustries Software, n.d.), provide limited flexibility in the equations that users can express.Additionally, the use of commercial packages, which by nature do not perform calculationstransparently, can hinder reproducibility, which is vital to the scientific process. PyGDH(“pigged”) is a Python 2 / Python 3 (Python Software Foundation, 1991–2020) package thatis meant to be accessible to scientists who might not be specialists in scientific computing, while approaching the level of flexibility associated with writing dedicated programs tailoredto solving specific problems. The PyGDH User’s Guide provides detailed instructions forcreating numerical models, including a brief introduction to necessary command line andPython (Python Software Foundation, 1991–2020) skills, and discussions of discretization andvalidation. Note that PyGDH emphasizes flexibility and simplicity over performance, and wasnot designed for high-performance applications or models describing complex spatial domains.

ARM Data-Oriented Metrics and Diagnostics Package for Climate Model Evaluation

A Python-based metrics and diagnostics package is currently being developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Infrastructure Team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to facilitate the use of long-term, high-frequency measurements from the ARM Facility in evaluating the regional climate simulation of clouds, radiation, and precipitation. This metrics and diagnostics package computes climatological means of targeted climate model simulation and generates tables and plots for comparing the model simulation with ARM observational data. The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) model data sets are also included in the package to enable model intercomparison as demonstrated in Zhang et al. (2017). The mean of the CMIP model can serve as a reference for individual models. Basic performance metrics are computed to measure the accuracy of mean state and variability of climate models. The evaluated physical quantities include cloud fraction, temperature, relative humidity, cloud liquid water path, total column water vapor, precipitation, sensible and latent heat fluxes, and radiative fluxes, with plan to extend to more fields, such as aerosol and microphysics properties. Process-oriented diagnostics focusing on individual cloud- and precipitation-related phenomena are also being developed for the evaluation and development of specific model physical parameterizations. The version 1.0 package is designed based on data collected at ARM’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) Research Facility, with the plan to extend to other ARM sites. The metrics and diagnostics package is currently built upon standard Python libraries and additional Python packages developed by DOE (such as CDMS and CDAT). The ARM metrics and diagnostic package is available publicly with the hope that it can serve as an easy entry point for climate modelers to compare their models with ARM data. In this report, we first present the input data, which constitutes the core content of the metrics and diagnostics package in section 2, and a user's guide documenting the workflow/structure of the version 1.0 codes, and including step-by-step instruction for running the package in section 3.

STDA05-51 milestone

In the case for each of the tasks, implementation started in a private topic branch. That branch was later submitted as a merge request where the code was run through regression tests across multiple test platforms. The merge requests were also subjected to human reviewers for approval. After necessary modifications were made, the code was merged to VTK-m's master branch. Subsequently, documentation was written for the VTK-m User's Guide.

Displacement driven balancing of a diamond turning machine flycutter

The spindle balancing operation is critical to the performance of precision lathes and should be conducted anytime the configuration of the spindle or its tooling is modified such that an unbalanced condition may occur. Within the machine tool community, accelerometers are typically used as the feedback device during the balancing operation. At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), we have nearly 40 years of history using displacement sensors, such as capacitance gauges, in place of accelerometers when balancing precision spindles. The process of balancing a precision machine spindle using displacement sensors is presented in the context of two work examples. In this case, the details of the one-dimensional balancing operation performed after replacing a flycutter on the spindles of two unique large optic diamond turning machines is discussed. The pros and cons of accelerometer driven balancing and displacement driven balancing are also presented. In the accelerometer context, the level of balance achieved for our work example is less than 100 micro-g or a total indicator reading (TIR) of 1.6 µm. The process of balancing has been enhanced over the years as advances have been made in software, data acquisition systems, and instrumentation. The balancing system is described including details about instrumentation, set-up, how phase and spindle structure stiffness is calculated, and how the LLNL developed software that guides the user through the process by suggesting corrective action.

CSISAR--Complete System Integrated SAR

The CSISAR tool is GUI based and very simple to use. The algorithms are robust, and the unique processing flows, that the user is stepped through, virtually eliminate the possibility of error in GEOINT production. An integrated data manager is a key part of the CSISAR system. This data manager keeps track of the data available to a user and informs the user of what data is available and what can be done with that data. This keeps the user from having to be trained in the nuances of the algorithms. CSISAR also has an integrated product manager, which helps the user identify, view and manage previously made products. CSISAR was originally developed in 2010-2011 as a Windows based system. It was updated in 2015 to be a Linux based system. This SAND report is intended to make the Product Description and User’s Guide for CSISAR (originally included within the software) more widely available. New is a brief addition of Linux-specific installation details.

Freight Analysis Framework Version 5 (FAF5) Base Year 2017 Data Development Technical Report

The Freight Analysis Framework (FAF) integrates data from a variety of sources to create a comprehensive national picture of freight movements among states and major metropolitan areas by all modes of transportation. The latest of this data series is FAF5, which is the fifth generation FAF and is benchmarked on Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) 2017. Except for FAF1 that provided estimates for truck, rail, and water tonnage for calendar year 1998, later generations of FAF (FAF2 through FAF5) were built based on their benchmark year CFS data, for 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017 respectively. The FAF is produced under a partnership between Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). As a major data product of the FAF program, the FAF regional database provides a national picture of freight flows to, from, and within the United States (among regions and states), by commodity and mode for the base year, as well as for forecasts up to 30 years into the future in a 5-year interval. Additional FAF data products also include FAF network flows database, where truck movements are routed onto the national highway network, estimates of annual projections, and synchronized historical data series. This report is a technical document prepared to describe the data sources and methodologies applied in the process of building the FAF5 base-year 2017 regional database, released as FAF5.0 in February 2021. This report offers a description of the diverse data sources and modeling methods used in constructing the base year FAF5 regional database. The FAF5 base-year database is used as the base for development of forecasts and for assignment of truck flows on highway network. Similarly, the FAF5 base-year database will be used as the base to generate FAF5 annual estimates. In addition to this report, users are encouraged to refer to the FAF5 User’s Guide, which provides basic information of the data, including definitions of the data attributes, information on how to access the data and tool, as well as detailed data dictionary and code tables.
