Methodology for Validation of Unsteady Pressure-Sensitive Paint Measurements using Pressure Transducers

Unsteady Pressure-Sensitive Paint (uPSP) technology provides simultaneously high-frequency and high-spatial resolution surface pressure fluctuation measurements. It has demonstrated value in wind tunnel test facilities to evaluate aerospace vehicle unsteady aerodynamics. The calibration of measurements from digital pixel counts into corresponding physical units relies on both lab-based and in-situ calibration steps, and its validation is both challenging and critical to adoption of the technology. We present a rigorous methodology for direct comparison of uPSP-derived surface pressure measurements to reference pressure transducer data based on a model of the camera-based measurement error, a model of the flow field pressure signal, and their propagation through the uPSP data reduction algorithm. The methodology is demonstrated on data collected in a small-scale, subsonic wind tunnel test as well as data collected from a Space Launch System unsteady aerodynamics characterization test at the NASA Ames Research Center Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel Complex.

Reliable, Low Mass, Non-Invasive Pressure Transducers

Mass is a major driver for future spacecraft and missions exposed to high radiation levels (i.e. Europa Orbiter) present even more challenge. A variety of non-invasive measurement techniques are in development that enables determination of pressures within a propulsion network.

Design and Experimental Evaluation of Flextensional-Cantilever Based Piezoelectric Transducers for Flow Energy Harvesting

Cantilever type piezoelectric harvesters, such as bimorphs, are typically used for vibration induced energy harvesting. However, a major drawback of a piezoelectric bimorph is its brittle nature in harsh environments, resulting in short life-times as well as output power degradation. The emphasis in this work is to design robust, highly efficient piezoelectric harvesters that are capable of generating electrical power in the milliwatt range. Various harvesters have been modeled, designed and prototyped, and the flextensional actuator based harvester, where the metal cantilever is mounted and coupled between two flextensional actuators, was found to be a viable alternative to the cantilever type piezoelectric harvesters. Preliminary tests showed that these devices equipped with 5x5x36 mm two piezoelectric PZT stacks can produce greater than 50 mW of power under air flow induced vibrations.

Nylon-11 Nanowires Embedded in Flexible Substrates for Piezoelectric Transducers

Nylon-11 nanowires have been fabricated in flexible track-etched polymer templates. Customized fabrication equipment was employed to realize an air-flow and gravity assisted template-wetting synthesis technique. X-ray diffraction analysis suggests that the strength of the piezoelectric phase of the nanowire crystals is directly proportional to the air-flow.

Damper reduces effects of resonance on force transducer

Viscous-film damper eliminates response lag of resonance generated noise when inserted into the thrust measuring system. This technique can be applied to automated devices when pulsed force or low order impact is involved, and where signal noise is produced by stopping or reversal of mechanical travel or by water hammer.
